New Scanners from Kodak

ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 19—Kodak today launches a new series of scanners designed to take digital document capture to new levels of speed, functionality, and ease of use for high-end office desktop model scanners.

The KODAK i1400 Series Scanners offer small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), which typically handle between 3,000 to 10,000 documents daily, a competitive edge in streamlining management of their paper documents. The i1400 Series Scanners provide high image quality of up to 600 dpi optical resolution, easy-to-use operation, and speeds up to 75 pages per minute.

“From voice of the customer input and surveys, we’ve learned that nearly 75 percent of end-users rank improving efficiency and productivity at the top of their lists of expectations from capture technologies. SMBs are especially keen that document scanning provides these benefits,” said Dolores Kruchten, General Manager, Document Imaging, Graphic Communications Group and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. “The KODAK i1400 Series Scanners meet the challenges that SMBs face by offering exceptional speed, new image processing capabilities, and ease of use.”

The i1400 Series Scanners include three models. The simplex KODAK i1410 Scanner and duplex KODAK i1420 Scanner have recommended daily volumes of 7,500 pages per day. The duplex KODAK i1440 Scanner handles up to 10,000 pages per day and features additional image processing capabilities. The i1420 and i1440 Scanners are the first in their respective classes to include a document imprinter to print tracking information directly onto documents as they pass through the scanner, even while running at top scanning speeds. Post-scan printers are typically expensive optional accessories.

A USB 2.0 interface provides easy connectivity and fast image transfer for all i1400 Series Scanners. A built-in “smart touch” feature delivers intuitive operation by enabling users to easily handle scanning tasks, including scan to email, printers or other desktop applications. Users can preview and edit images, including zoom, rotate, and crop, before sending. With nine pre-set shortcuts, users can simply point and click to accomplish everyday scanning tasks. In addition, users can easily modify any of the shortcuts to create their own custom setups.

The KODAK i1400 Series Scanners accept a wide range of mixed documents, from onionskin to card stock in sizes from small cards to materials approximately 11.5 inches in width (A3) and up to 34 long. The scanners use Kodak’s Sure Path paper handling with three-dimensional ultrasonic multi-feed detection. They can scan up to 75 pages per minutes and feature five output options, including Kodak’s exclusive dual stream output for simultaneous bi-tonal and grayscale or bi-tonal and color.

All i1400 Series Scanners are bundled with KODAK Capture Software Lite, a powerful application that allows productive batch scanning and output to a variety of file types and complements Kodak’s Perfect Page technologies for image processing.

With Kodak’s Perfect Page technologies for image processing, which include automatic color detection, de-skew, blank image detection, and iThresholding, these scanners deliver several new image-enhancing features such as:

§ Background color smoothing. Removes variations in paper and form background color for greater color consistency and cleaner and sharper looking images. This can make information easier for people to read and also reduce color output file size

§ Color output adjustment. Allows users to adjust brightness, contrast and color balance to match the original rendition

§ Automatic orientation. Based on document content, automatically rotates the scanned image correctly for reading to expedite document preparation time. Documents can be fed mixed portrait and landscape within a batch for right-reading output without time-consuming post-processing

The fastest scanner of the series, the i1440, also has additional Perfect Page capabilities, including:

§ Photo extraction. Automatically locates, extracts and outputs a photo as a separate image file to improve image quality. Using one scanner to capture text and photos in a single scan can improve overall workflow efficiency

§ Segmented black-and-white output. Optimizes the image quality of text and photo regions independently and simultaneously to improve image quality on compound documents such as passport applications and insurance claims

§ Trainable color dropout. Eliminates up to three different colors, plus “learns” up to three more colors to drop out to increase OCR readability

A3 and A4 sized tethered flatbeds—accessories available for the entire series—allow for the scanning of books and bound documents or fragile items. With the tethered design, users gain the flexibility to position the flatbed in a location away from the base unit. For example, placement can be on a shelf—an ideal solution where desktop space is limited.

Users who like KODAK Capture Software Lite, but would like to have even more versatile batch scanning solutions, can purchase the full version of KODAK Capture Software, Offering many additional features including OCR and Barcode recognition, KODAK Capture Software features more than 40 different output formats, digital signature capabilities, and other useful production features.

Depending on model, the scanners are expected to range in U.S. list price from about $4495 to $8495 and will be available in Summer 2007. Orders are now being taken. KODAK scanners, software and services are available through the company’s channel partners.
