The 501/601 are based on a Kyocera MFP without a stapler, so Ricoh didn't have much of a choice on that one. Agreed that its a disadvantage against other A4s, so with Ricoh you will either have to sell the C401 with a finisher or an A3 MFP for the foreseeable future.

In a way its already gone to the internet and away from the outside sales rep........at least for stand alone printers and A4 devices. If all someone needs is a printer or an A4 to be used for basic printing,scanning and copying.....face it, they really don't need us already. If you've been at this a long time you probably remember the days when you sold a lot of A4 machines to small offices. 20 years ago if you needed an A4 you called a copier dealer. Those days are gone for the most part.

In addition to Ricoh, HP, Kyocera, and Xerox all offer a few A3 SFPs that are in the 50-60ppm range.

Czech, I got nothing for you, well, may have something. Every opportunity is different, all depends on the time of the month, we're I'm at with revenue for the quarter or the month, if I can hold MSRP with a certain account. I taken the position (Commercial), that all my A4 devices will be priced at MSRP. A3 devices 21-40ppm would be 1,500 to 2,500, and 3,500 or more on everything else. Just a guide line that I try and follow. I'm not in the Major account business, maybe some other P4P'ers...

Across the board, I probably average 12-15% margin above whatever markup management puts in before my "Sales Cost" is published. For printers & desktop A4 devices, I just want to get a bunch of them in the field running pages & making money, so I sell most of them at my Sales Cost. That recurring revenue stream & volume in numbers is more valuable than making a few extra dollars on the hardware. On larger A4 MFPs, I'll typically have a 20-25% margin, because I typically propose...

In about 5 placements, I've been able to take customers from existing A4 color devices and put them into one of these models for not much more than what they were paying, the high cost of A4 color consumables was the key when the user was making about 1,000 color pages per month along with 1,500 or more black. The low price cpc is an advantage with the Ricoh models. I have used a few of these systems as seed models, meaning that they take the color unit and commit to the lowest possible...

I havn't seen one placement of the frontier in my territory yet. But that doesn't mean they aren't out there. I see the whole copier industry making a shift to A$ devices in the next 24 months or less, they have too. Price is the driving factor, I've heard it all about A4's, such as "A4's can't hold up to heavy volume", oh yea then why do I see laser printers with hundreds of thousands of prints on them and they weigh under 100lbs? Heck, I just came from an account that has 180K on a Ricoh...

I'm with Art. I think the A4 systems are in the market to stay and soon everyone will have them. Samsung will also have A3 systems within the next 18 months to be able to offer them with the A4's on bids and tenders. We shouldn't forget old HP when we have this discussion...they still collect more clicks in NA than any other manufacturer and they are seriously getting into the managed print business. It seems to me it is going to come down to who is going to gaurantee the client the toner on...

Sostilio & Associates did not have a very favorable review of the SHARP 'Align 09' Dealer Show and mentioned that SHARP "did little and offered less to neither raise the attendee’s spirits nor make a good argument to be a Sharp dealer if you want to sell A3 product." I read the article on limewire and it stated the factory in Japan is ceasing to manufacture A3's guess thats it for the US market also!!

Did Panasonic make their A3 MFPs for anyone else? Were they ever sold under a non-Panasonic label? The color units have a "Fuji" look to them and earlier A3 color units were also sold as Xerox WorkCenters and were from Fuji.

I ate up a Panasonic A3 deal today. I convinced a current Panasonic A3 customer, they had no where to go one year fron now and flipped them to five Toshiba's worth $68k plus $69k BOP. Don't delay hunt down Panasonic A3 base today!

Not much here in Jersey, not many dealers left, however with direct now getting into A4, I'm sure we'll see many more. I'm a little concerned that there's been NO A4 Mono except for Sammy, there is a need but Direct seems to be only launching color A4.

There is no specific volume which will become infliction point of cannabalisation...it we be based on the Vendors' being able to educate the customers. Most(over95%) of the current print/copy volumes is only A4, hence there is a strong point in A4 eating into A3 market. It is propelled by serious ATL work done by companies like HP. In my marketplace, the used A3 market (especially Colour)is still able to displace new A4 products at the same price. Colour quality and reliability has improved a lot over the last few years, so even a one generation old colour copier is very much in demand. The marketplace has a strong demand for colour that for me now exceeds black. Of course, this is not great new for new A3 sales. I'm looking at a break point of around 10k/month, at that point, at least at my dealership, a3 is a lower tco. They [the samsung rep]say when you look at total volumes, 11x17 only accounts for like 3% of the global print volume. What I've seen is that its not accurate to extrapolate that only 3% of customers need it, it means that there is a wider group of customers that use it outside AEC, but they do a tiny amount of it. The most important question to ask is "how much do you copy 11x17"? If the answer is none, then the next question is "how often do you print 11x17"? When the answer is quite often, well A3 is then a no brainer, however if the answer is rarely, then I'll bundle an 11x17 laser or ink printer. Based on under 10K per month, A4 will save the customer on the TCO over the term of a 5 year lease.

Ricoh and Canon both say they are number 1 in the US and they are both right depending on how you are counting. Canon includes its desktop MFPs that sell in retail and Ricoh includes all MFPs priced above $1,000. Both include products that sell through any channel, but Canon has far more retail products that skew sales share in its favor. By Ricoh's math, it is number 1 with a 23.1 US share, followed by Canon. Ricoh also stated that it had the #1 color mfp share in 2009 (7 straight years)...

When you say you take a copier to a customer for a demo... Is it a Conditonal Sale? I will do this but only on the terms of if the MFP works as described you agree to buy/ lease that same unit without any further demos. I have seen too many potential customers do the Vendor merry go round with six copier vendors to get free copiers for several months. I have seen too many RFQs where a customer has to get three quotes and you are unexpected lowest bid. They ask you in for demo but never...

Yes, I agree, we only picked up the Sammies for monochrome no color, we've stuck with Ricoh for that. I just hoping Ricoh doesn't screw it up with higher cpp than the A3 color machines.....something is telling me that the A4 color will be higher, however I hope I'm wrong. If A4 color price is higher than A3 color, that leaves the door open for someone to develop a color A4 with A3 cpp pricing.

Until A4 starts to really take over in the U.S., my guess is that the manufacturers will produce higher CPP A4 devices so they do not negatively impact the number of more expensive A3 devices that are placed into higher volume environments. Once one manufacturer lowers the CPP for A4 devices, everyone else will follow suit.

doesnt the sharp frontier series have color cpp right now that is close to a3 color? Seems to me like they're innovating faster and getting new features to market first and getting a share of the margins that come with that. I was really happy when c2050/2550 came to market and we had an edge for a moment, but think about it: print from smart card, free sharp desk seat, a4 color, segment 3's with single pass duplex scanning, pull out usb keyboard... Whats the value in ricoh dragging their...

Seems Ricoh, Canon and Xerox may be the last of the holdouts. When speaking with a rep at Ricoh they were concerned that A4 devices will lower profit (image that,they do make a profit on a box)expectations especially if A4 takes off. With the presence of Sharp, Samsung and KonicaMInolta they needed to make the move. You should check out the Lexmark XS658dme/dfe. 55ppm, single-pass duplex color scanning, open architecture, scan-to/print-from USB. It can handle 20k/month easy.

I've never liked the GUI's on their A4's, I thought it was a more print centric device. If their GUI remains the same, I'm thinking tough existing A3 customers will have a tough time with the interface. I think the MSRP for 25ppm device is high, sctually very unless it comes with an additional paper bank and finisher. So far that's it from me, I haven't had the chance to do much research on these devices.

Wow!!!! This is a killer all right.....how in the world can we compete against a 25ppm A3 machine with a price like that. From what I know this is stripped down compared to most 25ppm systems. There are many options that are standard on others. That is why this is so cheap. If someone just needs a barebone system at an incredible price this is it.

Art, Check this out: Specs Canon iR2525 It does not come standard with color scan-to-email, ifax, ftp, smb. You need a color send kit. There is no HDD. Does not come with PCL, PS. It has UFR II LT printing. Does not come standard with RADF or DADF as they call it. No searchable PDF's or OCR standard Smallest mono LCD screen on an A3 system that I have seen. 512 Ram...fraction of most MFP's in this range keyboard is not standard

Sharp is still in. They are under-distributed and I'm sure Japan is dissatisfied with this so I would not be surprised to see some changes, but Sharp is still invested in printing and these changes will probably be intended to drive growth, not just cut costs. By the time Panasonic bailed they had not launched a new A3 in three years, sold off their direct division, turned their dealers into resellers. Far more writing on the wall

Old Glory: I finally sold one last week!! About the begging and pleading for an A4. What I really wanted was an A4 black device and a system that had the same cpp model as our A3's. I see the current MPC 300/400 very hard to sell especially and they don't justify a cos per copy well when you are replacing an A3 device.

No need for apologies! I wish we were going t have a new 25ppm with color scan. I can see we are going to start gettinh hammered if we dont have a refresh of the 16, 20 and 25 ppm a3 devices.

Any opinions on how these have sold historically and how they have fared in the last year or so as they become old? Also, does it seem like they are being replaced or just discontinued? I feel like there is not a huge market for ultra low-end A3 BW MFPs. I think only Kyocera has a walk-up A3 BW MFP below 20ppm.

Let's wait to see if these may be the best of both worlds. Comparing Ricoh to Canon, both of them are taking their first crack at monochrome A4 MFPs, so while they are competing against one another, they're primarily competing against perception that existing users of products from HP, Lexmark, Samsung & Xerox. From the TCO perspective, these should still blow HP's M4555 out of the water, at least as long as customers are buying OEM cartridges. Ricoh's A4 products will be great for Ricoh...

I think Ricoh waited so long to release an A4 system like this for the fear of what it will do to the A3 business. I know my Sr. Management is concerened that reps will start selling A4 systems to replace existing A3 systems and drive revenue down. The perfect spot as everyone has pointed out is in the MPS world. This product will do well to knowck out the HP, Lexmarks, etc... I wish we had it sooner.

Let's face facts, we all need to drive revenue, however we all still need to make commissions. Do the math, up until about 7,000 pages per month an A4 will have a lower TCO than an A3. If the customer does not need 11x17, then I'm goign with the A4....period. I'll have to move more boxes, but in the long run I think I'll make more.

The Ricohs have been slow sellers is not because of end user needs or wants. Basically ours is a quota/revenue driven business from the top to the bottom. The preferred compensation model for commissions is that of a revenue based plan with commissions. Why have a GP driven comp plan for your sales people when your Dealership or Branch has a revenue based quota plan from the manufacturers? It just doesn't make sense. Thanks for taking time for the great blog....there was a lot of good info in there. The rule of thumb is 2 A4's to 1 A3. I thought he was referring to the Ricoh color A4's as those are the ones that I knew about. I have not seen an A4 Ricoh that fits this class. A4's really work great when a customer does not need all the bells & whistles or 11x17". Canon has a very good position like you said Art with the 2525. Rep in my office was up against Canon today and they were beating us up on a 33 per minute A3 so he tried to work it out by proposing the new model. Only one problem, Canon is in at $0.0083 per page on the service. We figure we can go no lower on a cpc on this product than $0.0149. So how's that going to work with mps when I'm seeing mps at below a penny a page?

Platen glass is letter only doc feeder is 50 sheets "Auto Reversing Feeder" I beleive the docs insert image up, not sure though. 550 sheet paper trays Unit will stand fine with the wheels and lower paper deck unit, most of the new models are coming with these bottom supports now. Finisher only on SR model and can be added to "s or sf" models no punch unit claim to fame on this is going to be workflow, embedded solutions, price, speed, ease of use, color GUI,...
