The 501/601 are based on a Kyocera MFP without a stapler, so Ricoh didn't have much of a choice on that one.

Agreed that its a disadvantage against other A4s, so with Ricoh you will either have to sell the C401 with a finisher or an A3 MFP for the foreseeable future.
