I've set up user code management for customers on their color machines in the past. But I have one question.

In the operators manual it states:

"To regiser the user code of the printer driver automatically, select PC Control: ON for the printer in User Code Management." - no problem, that is what I normally do.

Then it goes on...
"If you use the user code set in User Tools, select PC Control:OFF and set the user code for each color. Set the user codes registered in User Tools for the printer driver".

?????

What exactly does that mean?

Mike:

I did some experimenting with this and you are correct. Here is what I found that may be useful to others:

It is best to have PC Control On. Then, it is necessary to select color or black & white for management.

On the PC, in the driver you can input the user code (1 time only for RPCS and if you need to change it is necessary to reinstall the driver). With the PCL driver you can change the user code on demand which allows for separate users on a PC with different rights or the ability to jump from PC to PC and keep your rights.

It is important that if the client has b&w rights only that in the main driver on their PC you select B&w for their output options in print preferences, otherwise whenever they print something with color nothing will come out and no error will occur.
