Toshiba Corp. said Monday it has suspended operations at a plant in Oita, southern Japan, that produces semiconductors used in cars and industrial machinery, after a strong earthquake hit the region over the weekend.

Toshiba said in a statement that some equipment was damaged and that the company was still analyzing the impact on production.

The plant produces LSI system chips, about 60% of which are sold to automakers and industrial machinery, a spokesperson for Toshiba Electronics and Storage said.

He added that Toshiba does not yet know when it can resume production and is likely to provide an update on Tuesday.

The company also makes LSI chips for the system at a factory in northern Japan, with other local producers, such as Renesas Electronics, also building the devices.  reported on newsweek
