It's been about six month since the press release of toshiba tec forming an alliance with memjet to produce memjet color MFP's. I saw a neopost envelope printer the other day it was actually the Rena system relabled with the memjet print head. The quality was pretty darn good for inkjet, and of course the image will not jump off the page like laser does.

Has anyone heard of any planned launches in the near future?

A Look at Memjet’s First Office All-in-One, the EvoJet Office Pro 310

We’ve written a lot about Memjet in the past, and thought a look at the first Memjet-powered office All-in-One, Lomond’s EvoJet Office Pro 310, was in order. The EvoJet Office Pro 310 uses Memjet’s color inkjet printing technology, which is based on a stationary page-width wide print head (right). With conventional office inkjet printers, much smaller print heads move back and forth across the page to print. In contrast, the Memjet print head is stationary; only the paper moves, which translates into much faster print speeds, up to 1 second per page, or 60 ppm in black and color, according to Memjet.

HP introduced a wide range of new print products today, one of which is their new Office Jet Pro X line, available Spring 2013. This line features HPs new PageWide fixed print heads very similar in concept to Memjet's fixed print heads.

Last I heard of this technology from HP was their Edgeline series of printers. I do not now how successful they were with that technology. I have never seen one in any office that I have been in.

Could this new inkjet technology disrupt the laser technology that dominates the commercial market place today? I guess until we get pricing and see samples from actual product, nobody knows.

Memjet claims it took a lot of money and time to perfect their print head technology so Toshiba probably made a smart move to license this technology rather than try to reinvent the wheel.
I doubt it will be long before inkjet replaces conventional laser printing as the technology of choice in printing. If you look at what Benny Landa's been doing with his Nano Technology and then look at Memjet's fixed print heads, there will be some convergence in the near future. I'm not sure how much further Xerography and laser printing can go digitally. You have to figure that only Oce has stepped out of the box on that side. The exciting part about this is just anticipating what will happen next.
Unless HP has made series improvements to their Edgline series they are no threat to a decent MFD. I was at one of the ON Demand shows a few years back and looked at the output from their Edgeline series and was totally unimpressed.

The other issue that "Printer Companies" have not figured out when it comes to MFDs is the Accessories. They put flimsy CRAP accessories on their "MFD" (I use the term generously) and expect them to last for a 3-5 year lease term. And they don't care if they don't last because by then it's NOT THEIR PROBLEM.

O yeah, that's the other thing that HP has not figured out... how to support a dealer network. The President of my company tells a story from a CDA meeting where an HP executive was the keynote speaker, trying to whoo independent dealers to take on their products. After he gave a very nice speech he asked for questions. One of the CDA members was a woman who owned her own dealership. And she stood up and asked the HP Exec "Who do I have to F*CK to get someone at HP to return my call?"

HP has been trying unsuccessfully to break into the MFD arena for 15 plus years, going back to the infamous MOPIER! I was actually flown out to Idaho by HP to look at the Mopier and help my company determine if we wanted to pick up the product or not. It was not ready for prime time, so we did not. I do know a dealer to the north of us that did pick it up, and lived to regret the decision.

Their is a reason that HP has chosen to sell Canon MFDs, because they can't seem to make one that will sell.

That's my $0.02
