It’s not all that uncommon for an enterprise looking at the possibility of outsourcing its print management needs to hear a prospective vendor say, “We can definitely manage your print environment, but we’ll need to replace all of your existing devices with our devices.”

While a total refresh of the enterprise’s print technology will likely deliver certain advantages when it comes to print management, the challenge with such an “all or nothing” approach is that it is not always a cost-effective or necessary step for an enterprise wanting to achieve better management of its print environment. Often, there is an unrecovered cash investment in existing devices, particularly when the company purchased some of these assets instead of leasing them. Replacing them prematurely would just be bad business.

Art: I think you are right on. The other thing to think about is the "green" effect. When you ask clients to replace what in their mind are perfectly good machines they start wondering about your motives. The environmental impact of throwing out or reselling working decent printers usually upsets people. When the unit goes defective or is not economically repairable then there is usually no problem with changing them out. I think this is one of the big advantages dealers have in the field...we can truthfully say that we are not motivated simply by replacing everything but by managing their print environment more effectively. I think the manufacturers have a much harder time making this case.
