NEW YORK -- Attorneys who use technology for document review to prepare for legal and regulatory proceedings can save money and significantly improve the quality of the process, according to a survey by Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX).

Seventy-two percent of those surveyed who use Automated Document Classification (ADC) solutions saved time and 64 percent said it was more cost efficient. ADC combines an attorney’s expertise with computerized review technology to categorize documents. Of the 112 attorneys who participated in the survey, of those using ADC:

60 percent said it improves consistency
53 percent said it allows for more accurate budget planning
46 percent said it improves accuracy.
But fewer than one-third of the attorneys asked said they have used ADC solutions, such as Xerox Litigation Services’ CategoriX PDF file to classify documents. CategoriX combines input from a legal team with technology to automatically categorize documents, reducing the amount of data that a person needs to review. For those that don’t use ADC, more than one-third said it’s because of concerns over the cost and resources. However, as the survey reveals those who use ADC realized significant savings.

“Using new technologies like automated document classification can make document review easier, faster and more accurate,” said Randall Burrows, vice president and general manager of Xerox Litigation Services. “Clients that use automated document classification are better able to manage the increased volumes of data in e-discovery. The result: they save time and money and can put less resources on document review and more focus on creating winning legal strategies.”

Recent projects with CategoriX, support the survey’s findings. A Global 50 corporation saved 67 percent in the cost of a review involving 2 million documents with CategoriX classifying 93 percent of the documents.

All of those surveyed agreed that it’s important to limit the number of documents that need to be reviewed and the time spent reviewing them without compromising accuracy. Almost half (42 percent) of legal professionals agree that technology is the key to improving document review.
