Question

I am considering using several of your solutions products, including ScanRouter, in my organization. However, our LAN is a wireless LAN and I'm concerned whether or not your solutions products work in this environment. Can you provide any assistance with this?

Answer

Ricoh's solutions products support a wireless infrastructure in almost all cases. Our products use the DCOM protocol in the application layer, and as such, will work in a wireless environment as long as the wireless components (LAN cards, access points, and routers) support the DCOM protocol. While most wireless LAN devices will support this protocol, please check with the supplier of the equipment you're using in your LAN before making the final decision to install Ricoh's solution products. At this time we are aware of only one manufacturer whose devices do not support the DCOM protocol--a Japanese company, Merco. Most other manufacturer's equipment should support the protocol, but again, please confirm this fact before making any decisions.

If you would like additional information regarding the DCOM protocol, access the "official" web site at:

http://www.microsoft.com/com/tech/dcom.asp

You can also find out more about firewalls and the DCOM protocol at:

http://www.microsoft.com/com/wpaper/dcomfw.asp

If you come across a wireless component that does not support the DCOM protocol, please have a trained Ricoh representative complete a Technical Alert providing us with all of the specification and product information for the component.
