After viewing some literature on the web my customer believes that the 480 will allow him to scan to dxf file format for take-offs and editing.

Doesn't this require additional software?

Isn't this less successful than practical?

What can the customer expect if they scan to an image file and then convert it to dxf using some third party software?

Thanks!

Here's what my higher ups said:

Regarding the DWG/DXF/DWF option: Please note that this options allows for two added functions.
1. You can scan directly to DWF
2. You can print DWG/DXF direclty without having to have AutoCAD on your PC.

That's it.

There is no scanning to DWG or DXF -- since they are both vector file formats and one would need to have third party software to do a raster to vector conversion. It could be that some systems have integrated a raster to vector conversion package as an add on to their system -- or that the end user could purchase third party raster to vector packages and have them integrated in the WF system.- although I have no proof of that happening in either case. If you run across that scenario let me know.

FYI: Raster to vector conversion is not easy-- not all software does a good job of it ,and it is usually very time consuming to the user-- often with a not perfect and sometimes not very good result.
There is a software that will convert PDF files to DXF files and you can bring these into Acad. The product is called AIDE PDF to DXF Converter and you can download a free trial. Just do a search on the web and check it out. I have a customer who will be buying a 240W and doing this using this software however... the software requires a PDF vs 1.6 type. Our next release of the software will create this type of PDF file. In addition, Acad 7 allows you to bring DWF files in and draw over them. I am told that it creates a kind of "transparency" effect and it's easy to do.
