My boss came back from Convergence and said that Ricoh is moving into videoconferencing. I'm a bit excited about this, as I feel like I'm competing against too many companies on copiers, and everything comes out to the lowest price. I'm hopeful that the videoconferencing provides more of a niche. But I'm wondering:

1. Are any of the other copier companies doing this (that we're aware of)?

2. Who is going to be our competition? I'm not talking about Skype or Google, where it's just a webcam on a computer. I'm talking about companies selling videoconferencing equipment. Does anyone know who we will be running up against?

I think this market is pretty open.

Cisco has a big footprint and now that Microsoft owns Skype I would not discount Skype at all.

I do not believe any other copier players are in on this though.

Also, until multiple brands of conferencing systems can communicate together, I would think whichever vendor gets the largest foothold will win.
Not necessarily a good thing.

Its just one part of its new "ecosystem" of information and communication technologies that go beyond print.

I could see this tech having a similar impact on meetings as GotoMeeting or Webex did when they came out, which I use a lot. Who knows if Ricoh has the tech or vision to make it work. They are just saying they are going to try.

I could see this being a good fit for armed services, government, major corporations, and distributed mid-size corps.
