CANON U.S.A. INTRODUCES THE CD-4050 DIGITAL DOCUMENT RECORDER

Compact Desktop System Features Built-in CD-R and Networking Capabilities, Maximizing Business Workflow Productivity

AIIM 2000, NEW YORK, NY, April 10, 2000 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., the company whose imaging solutions give people Know How, announced today the immediate availability of the new CD-4050 Digital Document Recorder. The compact desktop system utilizes state-of-the-art imaging technology to digitally scan up to 39 documents per minute, allowing data storage on CD-Rs via its built-in CD-Recorder, or on to a company's network, making it easy to retrieve, view, and move documents across a global enterprise.

The CD-4050 features Canon's exclusive Smart Filing auto-indexing functions, which streamline the document capture process. Users can set the CD-4050 to read bar codes or Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) information so that it may be assigned to a searchable data field. Selective Optical Character Recognition (OCR) eliminates the need for manual data entry, or can transform the first page of an image document into a searchable text or HTML file.

A powerful, intuitive storage facility, the CD-4050 organizes documents into "Cabinets and Folders," allowing each document up to three user-defined data fields. As a standard, low-cost, and reliable archiving medium, CD-Rs can also be integrated with most office imaging systems, seamlessly complementing existing document workflow processes.

"The CD-4050 will continue to revolutionize paper-intensive organizations, as did its predecessor the CD-4046, by delivering a simple, secure, turnkey imaging solution," said Robert J. Stankard, director and general manager, Image Filing Systems Division at Canon U.S.A. "This device allows our customers to achieve new levels of office efficiency by freely exchanging their knowledge, ideas, and information -- regardless of format, content or location."

With standard Ethernet connectivity and support for Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT operating systems, the CD-4050 Digital Document Recorder can also serve as a high-speed network scanner. A host of network scanning and automatic indexing features such as Text Mode, Photo Mode, and 255-step Brightness Control, provide the best quality output for text, halftones and continuous-tone input. To increase workflow productivity, the 100-sheet Feeder Tray allows documents of various sizes to be scanned automatically, and it determines and adjusts to the size and thickness of each document.

The CD-4050 Digital Document Recorder features multiple scanning modes - Simplex for single-sided documents and Duplex for two-sided. Essentially doubling productivity, Duplex mode features two contact image sensors that read the front and back of a document in a single pass for fast throughput. The unit scans at resolutions of 300 or 200 dots-per-inch (dpi), depending on the application's requirements.

Once scanned, images can be displayed on a built-in 6.5-inch color touch panel display. With an intuitive interface, documents can easily be retrieved and viewed page-by-page, where users can then rotate, reduce, or enlarge on-screen images, and scroll with ease. Scanned documents are captured as multi-page TIFF image files and stored on CD-Rs, which are capable of storing up to 20,000 pages (650MB). With the use of industry standard viewers such as Imaging for Windows software, images may be retrieved on the CD-ROM drive of virtually any Windows 95/98 and Windows NT-based PC.

The optional ED-500 Endorser imprints serial numbers, stamps and dates onto checks, share-drafts, and letter-sized documents. The imprint position is operator-adjustable and conforms to Federal Reserve Band regulations for check endorsement.

The Canon CD-4050 Digital Document Recorder is available today through authorized Canon Image Filing Systems dealers with a suggested retail price of $8,395.
