Sum-up: Ricoh keeps improving its product line by adding new features.

This new family replaces the older MP 6001/MP 7001/MP 9001 family of machine, with new features, notably, Web/cloud interface, mobile printing capability, ability of sharing a single fax line, and parts that are made from recycled steel. This model family includes the 60ppm Aficio MP 6002 ($20,000), the 75ppm MP 7502 ($26,500), and MP 9002 ($34,500). These models are identical except for speed and price, and they offer the same list of options and accessories. The SP models are also identical except that they include printing and scanning standard, not optional as on the basic models. The list price difference between the copier model and its SP version is approximately $4,500.

The processor runs at 1GHz. The base models come with 1GB of memory, which can be upgraded to 1.5GB. The SP models come with 1.5GB standard. A 250GB hard disk drive is standard.

Warm-up time on all the models is a speedy 30 seconds on the MP 6002 and MP 7502, and 300 seconds on the MP 9002. These units have an extraordinary first-copy-out time of less than 4 seconds, with the MP 9002 coming in at 2.9 seconds.
The standard 150-sheet-capacity single-pass duplex feeder scans originals at 88ppm in both black and color. This is an advance in speed over the last generation of MP copiers.

Standard paper capacity is 4,300 sheets, fed from two 550-sheet ledger-size paper trays, dual 1,550-sheet drawers, and a 100-sheet bypass. When you add the optional 4,000-sheet large-capacity tray, total paper capacity rises to an impressive 8,300 sheets.
At their speed range, these machines have a surprising wealth of output options, as they offer several different optional finishers that can handle additional options:

* First, there is a finisher with 3,000-sheet stacking capacity, a 50-sheet multiposition stapler, and a 250-sheet upper tray.

* Second, there is another 3,000-sheet finisher, this one with a 500-sheet upper tray. It is capable of 100-sheet multiposition stapling.

* A third finisher comes with a 2,000-sheet stacking capacity and a 250-sheet upper tray. It includes a 50-sheet multiposition stapler and a saddlestitcher. This finisher can make 60-page booklets using up to 15 ledger-size sheets.

* Ricoh also offers what it calls the “Production Booklet Maker.” It saddlestitches booklets up to 120 pages (from 30 sheets of paper). This production booklet maker requires the 100-sheet stapling finisher.

All of the finishers have a 2/3-hole punch option. A nine-bin mailbox unit with 100-sheet bins can also be added to the 50-sheet stapling finisher or booklet maker.

An optional cover interposer is designed to work with any of the finisher units. The device consists of a tray that holds up to 200 ledger-size sheets at up to 110lb. index in weight. This allows you to insert preprinted covers in a document as well as preprinted (but different) chapter inserts, all bypassing the potentially damaging heat of the copier’s fuser unit.
Multifunctional features: As noted above, the SP machines come standard with printing and scanning. Faxing is optional, and new to these machines, all six models can share a single fax line. Fax memory can be increased from 320 pages to 2,240 pages. Faxing is at 33.6kbps with JBIG. Internet fax and LAN fax are supported.

The print function includes PCL and Ricoh’s RPCS (Refined Printing Command Stream); PostScript is optional. RPCS is proprietary Ricoh driver software that provides enhanced printing capabilities and uses an advanced icon-based user interface.
USB and Ethernet are standard if you have the print controller active. Ricoh also offers a variety of optional interfaces including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet, and parallel. Mobile printing is supported.
Users are able to scan documents and send them over the network to different recipients and destinations. This function supports JPEG, PDF, and TIFF file formats. Scan-to-USB drive is also supported.

LDAP support is also standard if scanning is enabled. The scan-to-email function can also address 500 locally stored addresses per job, out of a total of 2,000 in all.

Other features: Ricoh keeps expanding its security options. It offers enhanced security features and options, including user authentication, PDF encryption, locked print, and a standard data overwrite kit for the hard disk with the ability to erase or encrypt sections on the hard disk.

Conclusion: These Ricoh Aficio MP models are excellent machines and a nice improvement over the previous generation. They offer an attractive combination of features, performance, and innovative technology. Ricoh keeps upping its line, and the results are excellent. We find the Aficio MP 6002, MP 7502, and MP 9002 family attractive in their market segments, and they get our Editor’s Choice Award.
