I've been puzzling over this one a almost a month now -- a client has a Aficio Color 4006, along with the Fiery module for allowing the system to be used as printer. The machine has been (what appears to be) powering off totally - the fans die, the control panel etc. All except for the fan in the Fiery unit. Initially I stripped the system down, checked the connections on the PSU board, thermister connections, etc. I removed a small amount of torn paper form the fuser, but other than that, nothing unexpected. All was fine for more than three weeks, but I got a report last week that the problem had reappeared.

I stripped the machine down again, and did some investigation.

There were a couple of unrelated SC's being logged, specifically to do with the sorter, which I've fixed, however, the machine still powers off.

I removed the fiery unit totally (I see why the fan on it remains on -- the unit has a seperate power supply, which is fed directly off the mains switch, thereby byp*ssing the actual main PSU), and started checking voltages etc at the PSU - however, as soon as I try and probe them, the copier switches off - exactly the same as what happens when it switches off on its own (yes, I have checked all the auto power off timers, etc).

It seems to be more common when the machine is cold, and warming up -- once it has warmed up it seems to work.
I did, however, observe that the hot roller (fuser) is heating up quicker than the pressure roller (and as such, the hot roller heater is switching off, the pressure roller one is still on, and the hot roller temperature keeps climbing for a bit). The highest I saw the temperate at was around 166 - now, I know the temperature cut out on the fuser is around 167 - 170, but I do not know what sort of cut out it is (does it totally power the system down, or does it through a SC?).

there is a thermistor to control the temperature and if ther is overheating the power will shut down but not completely as you will get an SC code 5-***on the display, depending what problem you are facing in the fuser. There is also an SP mode where you can actully remove the fuser and the machine will ignor this and work just the same, without giving any SC codes as the snesing is overridden. When you say that the machine shuts down do you mean that all lights and display go off. I had instances where this happened and had to replace the power switch and others where I had to replace the door safty switches.
Thanks for your reply Smile

The machine is powering off entirely - the screen / lights etc switch off, the fans power off, everything. The only thing that brings it back to life is the main power switch.

No SC codes are being reported either, so it can't be overheating then Frown

I have also noticed that with the machine on, front door open, if I remove the fuser and reinsert it, there is a high probability the machine will switch off -- exactly the same as it does on its own. (This is without closing the front door, so the warm up has not commenced).
I just remembered another similar problem but on a 3006 which is the prior model to yours. I had a pinched cable that leeds to the quenching lamp inside the drum unit. As you pull out the revoler tray right behind the top center screw ( behind and abive the charge corona cover). The leads were being pinched between the stud and the chassis causing a sudden blanking of the screen and no functions what so ever. Then as soon as I removed the revolver and pushed it back it would work fine. It cost me at least 3 visits before I got round to it. Also check the fuser lamps rear connections once fuser is full pushed in.
