I received the email below from Deon (P4P Member) and agreed with Deon that this would be a great topic for discussion with our peers.  Feel free to chime and post your thoughts.

I was in the UAE a week ago and it seems that this industry is changing big time faster than i thpught. Im not too sure that we will be able to survive only selling copiers etc. Over the last year or so we have also added telecommunication/voip and CCTV.  It might take time but this digital disruption will hurt us if we don't diversify and cater for the decline in paper.  

We will have to look for value added product. Document management software is an option but the cloud make this also another challenge.
Maybe we can start a discussion group on the above? I think it is in every bodies interest to cater for what is coming our way?

     I think the reports of our demise are greatly exaggerated. Yes, you will continue to see a reduction in printing and for sure copying, but "plummeting in 3 years" is hyperbole IMHO . The Ricoh & Toshiba, & Xerox reports are a continuing of the Big Crunch, a culling of the herd. That leaves more of the pie for those who are doing well.

I actually came into the copier world from the typewrite world.  Started my career with a thriving typewriter dealer.  The company had a lock on government accounts in 1/3rd of the state and also did the typewriter repair work for Sears stores in half the state in addition to a ton of up and down the street business.  I was primarily a technician at the time and saw the writing on the wall when one of my large school districts eliminated its 200+ typewriters in one fell swoop.  Within 18 months that dealer went from thriving business to out of business.

In many ways I feel I am watching the same forces come together in the copier world.  Its just happening at a slower pace due to consumers reluctance to abandon paper.  The manufacturers have been flailing away for the past decade to stave off the inevitable.  We've been told that Solutions or MPS would save us but clients aren't exactly clamoring for either.

There is also the factor that our equipment is now better than ever while at the same time customer's page volumes are dropping like a rock.  Many customers are getting to the end of leases and buying the existing equipment or downsizing or rightsizing their equipment.
