We deliver and install with every system. They are part of the delivery & installation expense, which the rep has the discretion of rolling into the deal or itemizing it on the order for the customer. From a variety of sources, I have heard they make a difference due to the vast number of electronics in the office today. They provide a buffer from surges from other electronics on the same circuit. This is why many systems require a dedicated line from the breaker. To protect from surges which do in fact increase the number of service calls for a variety of reasons that I'll leave to the techs to answer. But, to get you started, I've heard stories of copiers that misfeed frequently, then after a surge supressor was installed, the number of misfeeds diminished greatly. Image quality can also be an issue. USE THEM!
We require them with all leased machines/ any machine that is one a maintence contract. Just last weekend one of our sister companies moved their 1022; come Monday morning there was a power surge and pooooffffff there goes one of the main boards. Seems to happen about every 3 months to one of cust.
We place them on every system regardless of the agreement. The cost is built in to the base "rep cost" of the systems. I've been told that they help out with minor pulses that degrade electronics over time as well as I've seen some burned units that have given their lives for the machine due to lightning strikes. Now they aren't going to handle everything but they do a great job. A long time ago we started using the surge protectors for the fax machines that have a phone line filter and that has cut down dramatically the hits that occur that way. Overall, they are a small investment compared to cost of replacing a board on a machine that is under contract.
