We have at least a couple customers that originated with PaperCut and have "evolved" past them. One had PaperCut for a year but never got it implemented because there wasn't someone pushing to make it happen. Another learned from their experience with PaperCut how little they knew about their own environment and how much they could improve if they had behavior modification (pop-up boxes from the PA Rules Module) and cost recovery from the PA Cost Recovery Module.
PaperCut is only as good as the internal mechanism assigned with the implementation and monitoring and at its best, it can only take you so far.
I just sold my first PaperCut installation. While I haven't been involved in a physical installation yet, I've seen PaperCut's WebEx presentation several times and I've yet to see any real differences in PaperCut vs. Print Audit (other than price). I'm not saying they don't exist, just saying I was fairly impressed with the features touted in the presentation (and obviously, so was the client that purchased the software).

JasonR's comments regarding PaperCut's inability to track copy/fax/scan usage is true of PaperCut NG product that can be purchased directly by anyone via the internet. However, PaperCut MF is a dealer-only product that works with most major MFP manufacturers to track all usage on stand-alone printers and MFPs as well.

In the sale I just made, PaperCut was the one deciding factor for the client that made the sale a "no-brainer". Their new-found ability to charge-back clients for pages printed at desktop printers actually reduced their monthly expenses after the installation of all new equipment.

Needless to say, at this point I'm a huge fan of the solution. I'll keep you posted as I begin the implementation.

Jason, how familar are you with PaperCut?

Not very much, just what I'd read from press releases and such, and discussions with a couple of customers who use the Papercut NG product.

From that, my impression of the product was that it was not as full-featured as some of our other cost accounting solutions, but as long as the customer did not need those "other" features, they were very happy using Papercut.
Old Glory,

Not sure how long the MF version has been in play. I've only been back in the industry since January and my new dealership already had some PaperCut installations when I arrived. The software does have the behavior modification pop-ups you are referring to, and I'm told specialized scripts can be easily written to force almost any behavior. For instance, during a WebEx last week my PaperCut account rep told my client of a PaperCut installation in which the user set up a rule that when printing an email from Outlook (I know...why would you allow this anyway), the software forced duplex and monochrome printing to save paper and eliminate color clicks for a single hyperlink often found in email text. The client thought this was brilliant. The software also allows for pre-paid print quotas (great for educational campuses) and "green" pop-ups ("You could save x number of trees by printing this document in duplex to the MFP rather than simplex at your desktop printer").

My PaperCut account rep just connected to me via my LinkedIn account yesterday. If anyone wants to contact him directly, send me a LinkedIn invitation (Brian Merson at Centric Business Systems) and you can message him directly via LinkedIn.

Brian
You would be correct in the difference from the Papercut NG version vs. the MF version. We have sold about a dozen variations and it is a great product that makes a lot of sense. We have implemented it with MPS and MF solutions and it helps us keep the competition out. It's also great with swipe cards (HID/Kastle, etc...). Good luck.
