Paper better than PC/device for learning

research published by Daily Mail conducted by University of Tokyo

  • study conducted with group of students, ages 18-29
  • one group of student were given pen and paper, while other group used tablet PC or smartphone
  • those who took written notes about subject presented did so faster than those using electronic devices
  • participants were placed in a MRI machine and given brain scan while they were quizzed about subject material
  • students using paper had enhanced brain activity
  • regions of brain stimulated included memory, language and navigation
  • using paper gives brain extra special and tactile info to help in recall
