Trumbull, CT – October 7, 2012 – Océ, a Canon Group company and an international leader in digital document management, today announced new media and applications that will be showcased at Graph Expo in Canon booth 400 at McCormick Place South in Chicago, October 7 - 10.

Graph Expo attendees will see many firsts in Canon booth 400 thanks to new media. One of the exciting breakthroughs is a demonstration of one of the lightest weight papers available for cutsheet on the Océ VarioPrint® 6000 Ultra Line digital perfecting system. Another is the introduction of new Inkjet medias for the full line of Océ inkjet presses including the Océ ColorStream® 3900 system.

“We’ve never shown any media this light on the VarioPrint 6000 Line before – no one has. The fact that we can reliably run such light weights and our competitors cannot, is a compelling argument for customers to consider Océ. ” said Alex Gergely, Product Marketing Manager at Océ North America, a Canon Group company.

One of the applications showcasing this new lightweight media capability is a pharmaceutical package insert printed on 30 lb. (44gsm) media. The same Océ approved media, with 87 brightness, will also be available in a 35 lb. weight. Both are co-branded Océ/Ariva Lightweight Digital Opaque.

Lightweight Media Crucial in Shift from Offset to Digital
Until now, digital production equipment has been limited in its capability to print onto media much lighter than 50gsm. However, printers are increasingly under pressure for quicker turnaround and shorter runs. Digital, especially more affordable cutsheet presses, are an attractive solution.

“We looked at the market and determined there was a huge opportunity to print applications on 30 and 35 lb. media, most of which are printed offset today,” said Gergely. “Printers are asking for lightweight specialty stocks. We can offer them a cost-effective vehicle for short run that will help them free up their offset presses for longer running projects.”

From Pharmaceutical Inserts to War and Peace
The same 30 lb. media used in the pharmaceutical insert will also be shown in production of one of the longest books ever written: Tolstoy’s War and Peace. For that application, attendees will be able to see a side-by-side comparison of the final product produced on a typical 60 lb. stock, as well as on the new lightweight media – taking it from a two-volume paperback to just one volume.

“When you consider that publishers will be able to use one cover instead of two, it is a significant savings,” said Gergely. “Add in shipping costs and the savings are phenomenal.”

“With new, lightweight media, Océ is enabling new applications and creating new revenue streams for Océ customers,” said Francis McMahon, Vice President, Marketing, Production Printing Systems division of Océ North America, a Canon Group company. “Through partnerships with paper manufacturers & distributors, we are helping print providers make the cost-saving shift from offset to digital printing production.”

For Inkjet, Quality is Critical
In the Inkjet realm, Océ has collaborated with various paper vendors to deliver many new stocks, including a 45 lb. coated book media and a 2 sided gloss stock. Graph Expo attendees can see all of the new medias on display or being printed in the Canon booth.

“We now have the capability of running a 45 lb. educational book paper,” said Michael Poulin, Product Marketing Manager, Océ North America, a Canon Group company. “This new quality stock, designed specifically for our equipment, is an important breakthrough for Océ customers.”

Additional new media for inkjet will be demonstrated on the Océ ColorStream 3900 digital full-color inkjet printing system, part of the Océ ColorStream 3000 series. Attendees will be able to see a full range of applications on display and being produced during the show. Examples include a saddle stitched children’s book and a Comic book produced on 55 lb. matte coated paper and finished in line in the Canon booth; a Toulouse-Lautrec poster art book printed on heavy weight matte finish; Yellowstone park travel guides printed on 2-sided coated matte paper; a Japanese art book on 2-sided silk coated paper; and a national parks wall calendar printed on a 2-sided gloss coated stock. Samples of these and other applications will be available in Canon booth 400.
