At the core of the new imageRUNNER C5800 resides Canon's Color imagePlatform architecture, offering a range of advanced copy, print, scan and fax options while simultaneously enabling users to seamlessly switch between high resolution color and black-and-white output, and ultimately designed to boost the productivity of office workers.

"By expanding the selection of speeds to Canon's office color portfolio, we subsequently expand the range of businesses that can progress into the realm of office color," said Sam Yoshida, director and general manager, Corporate Systems Division, Canon U.S.A. Imaging Systems Group. "With each new color introduction, Canon is proving its dedication to meeting the real-world needs of enterprises by providing real choice and control in terms of system performance, speed and functionality.

"Many law firms, healthcare organizations and financial services providers need a fully-configured black-and-white multifunction imaging system to handle their daily production crunch, yet also are seeking a cost-effective alternative to outsourcing all of their color jobs. The imageRUNNER C5800 and C6800 make choice and control a reality by delivering both capabilities in one compact, network-enabled device," added Mr. Yoshida.

The imageRUNNER C5800 joins its sister engine, the imageRUNNER C6800, in Canon's color-enabled product portfolio - designed to make full-color capabilities an affordable option for multi-user, high-demand corporate departments. The imageRUNNER C5800 offers the same proven quality, reliability and productivity as the imageRUNNER C6800, and now adds a 58 page-per-minute monochrome output option to the product line(2). Both models print full-color output at 16 ppm. These powerful network-printing capabilities deliver superior output quality at up to 2400 x 600 dpi equivalent. Both models also offer exceptionally fast scanning at speeds of up to 70 ppm (at 300 dpi) and 50 ppm (at 600 dpi) in both color and black and white, with 600 x 600 dpi resolution.

The imageRUNNER C5800 is based on a dual 250 MHz processor design, featuring up to 768 MB RAM and a 40GB hard disk drive. Offering advanced digital copying, Mail Box features, available network printing, Super G3 facsimile(3), scanning and sending functions, the system functions as a central communications hub in high-demand corporate operations. With the installation of the optional Super G3 Fax Board, the imageRUNNER C5800 functions as a fax machine, providing busy corporate users the convenience of desktop faxing.

To support integrated digital workflows, Canon's Color Universal Send technology, an optional feature, allows users to scan and distribute documents via the Internet and corporate network to multiple destinations concurrently. Eliminating the need to print and forward hard-copy documents, the imageRUNNER C5800 can quickly convert color and black and white hardcopy originals into digital files for distribution to group or individual email and I-fax addresses, network or host folders, and document management systems such as Canon's imageWARE Document Manager. Canon's PDF High-Compression file format facilitates the efficient handling and transmission of scanned color images with minimal network impact.

The imageRUNNER C5800 is equipped with memory-enabled digital copying and mailbox functions to support document workflows and boost productivity. The C5800's mailbox function supports the on-site document storage required for secure information sharing and print-on-demand applications. Content from multiple mailboxes can be combined and printed as one job and/or sent to other network destinations.

At the heart of the imageRUNNER C5800 color-enabled image processing solution is Canon's Amorophorous Silicon (A-Si) drum technology. The innovative drum design delivers exceptional reliability over millions of impressions for both black and white and color output. Canon's monocomponent black toner is cost-effective for high-volume black-and-white applications, while the third generation color S-toners produce steadfast color with a touch of gloss. Advanced finishing capabilities, such as multi-position stapling, hole-punching and saddle-stitched booklet making, give companies the resources to produce the types of color-enhanced documents they formerly outsourced: flyers and marketing collaterals, business presentations, financial reports and sales brochures.

The imageRUNNER C5800 offers two print controller options. The Canon-developed Color Network Multi-PDL Printer Kit-C1 is best suited for general office environments, with support for PCL5c, PostScript 3 emulation, and Canon's proprietary Ultra Fast Rendering (UFR) technology. For higher-bandwidth printing requirements, Canon's imagePASS controller, co-engineered with EFI, delivers increased productivity, advanced print job management tools and support for genuine Adobe PostScript 3 and PCL5c page description languages. Both intuitively designed drivers let users control the document creation process format from their computer, specifying page layout, document finishing and image quality settings.

With a standard 100-sheet capacity Duplexing Automatic Document Feeder, the imageRUNNER C5800 automates complex paper-handling chores, such as processing multipage, single, double-sided, mixed-size and irregular-sized documents, as well as various stock sizes (as large as 13"x 19") and paper-weights (up to 140lb). The standard 4,200-sheet paper supply is expandable to 7,700 sheets.

The imageRUNNER C5800 comes equipped with a comprehensive set of utilities and features that simplify operation, management and security for users and administrators alike. Features that ship standard with the device include: Full-Color User Interface Touch Screen for intuitive user operation; Department ID mode for up to 1,000 departments or users; Canon's web based Remote User Interface and NetSpot Suite. Also available as optional features are the imageRUNNER Security Kit and imageWARE Software Suite, and eCopy Suite of network distribution products.

The suggested retail price of the imageRUNNER C5800 is $21,000. The device will be available through authorized Canon U.S.A. dealers and Canon Business Solution locations beginning November 2004.
