That is virtually the same thing. Take a fresh ream of any size paper and put it next to a ream of paper that has been thru the fuser of a copier, Looking along the height plane you can see how much thicker the latter is. The heat from the fuser slightly wrinkles the paper and allows air to settle in, these two factors increase the height of the paper stack.
Yes both are 8.5 inches but the total area of the legal is greater.

Have you independently confirmed their specs? I would guess that most Ricoh reps don't know any better and would say that ours does 50 as well. Many finishers are actually manufactured by Gradco or some similar company. If their's looks like ours, it probably is the same.
