successful is the "key" word I guess.  Does self-discipline make me successful? Well, it helps to get me out of bed on time, helps to make those calls when I know 90% are going to dodge me, helps when I need to finish something I started.  But does self-discipline help me close sales, alas closing sales makes me successful.  However, self-discipline over the years made me read that extra sales book, keeps me posting on this site everyday, keeps me yearning for more knowledge.

I guess after all of the above, I would agree that self-discipline is tops for me.

In sales, I would say the "magic formula" is Productivity + Efficiency = Success

Productivity is your determination, your consistency, your self-discipline and your work ethic. If you work hard, you will have some success.

Efficiency is your skill set, your experience and your time management skills. The longer you develop your skills and the more deals you're in, the faster you will get better at learning how to "work smart." Like sending emails at 7am to get a better response rate, slowing down the sales cycle to speed up the close and which industries respond best to which talk tracks.

A new rep can be very self-disciplined, but it doesn't guarantee him success. But I agree that it's a major component.
