I understand that Lexmark has IT Channel MFPs (e.g. X658) and Dealer Channel MFPs (e.g. XS658) that are basically the same performance-wise.

I would assume that the authorized dealers get some type of discount on toner cost, so my question is, what is keeping them from using this toner in the IT channel versions or in transactional (non-metered CPC) deals?

Are they keyed differently?

Is there a quota system in place?

Thanks for your insight!

The MFP's and single-function printers available via the Lexmark BSD channel are keyed differently than their counterparts that are available online & through the VAR channel. When orders are placed via Ingram Micro or TechData, a BSD receives discounts on both hardware and consumables. The impact the discounted consumables have on lowering the CPP is pretty significant, at least enough so to keep my customers from buying the hardware at a slightly lower price online.
Yes. Lexmark has been awesome for us so far. The only thing that I don't like is that we don't get any price breaks on OEM cartridges for non-BSD models. I was in an MPS deal, and the majority of the fleet required OEM toner (newer model), and Ricoh direct (surprise) under-cut our price by $.002, & we had priced the deal at 25% margin to begin with.

Long-term if Lexmark is serious about their BSD program and wants to give their dealers differentiation, they need to give them pricing discounts on toner for non-OEM models as long as they are not competing against Lexmark in an Enterprise engagement.

Just to clarify, they aren't "basically the same" they are EXACTLY the same. There is no difference in any way between the X and XS, other than the toner they can accept.
Yes, I meant cartridges for non-BSD models. You are also correct regarding the XS models compared to the X. They are completely identical in every sense, aside from the fact that the BSD models are only available in the base configuration. For example, the Lexmark X464de is the same as the X463de with a fax board added. To sell the BSD version (XS463de) with a fax, you would have to add the fax versus ordering a pre-configured model.
