I know, it seems basic, but I'm looking for some good information that proves that laser is cheaper than inkjet.

I have a prospect who is looking to replace an HP Professional Series inkjet that does 11 x 17. I think I can persuade them to forget about 11 x 17 and go with a color laser. But, the supply costs on the HP don't add up (they lie). It looks like the cpp is 3 cents for black & 11 cents for color. This can't be true. You know that, I know that, but how do I prove this to the customer?

It's like trying to prove a pot of water with a lid on it will boil faster than without.

Thanks for any help.

The prospect is replacing an HP Professional series inkjet 1200c. This printer does 11 x 17, which is about 25% of their already small volume. If I had to guess I'd say under 2k/month, all color with mixed coverage, but probably an average of 15%.

I borrowed some info I found on the net and found that so far the competition is working on laser products that do 11 x 17, putting them over $3000.

This is the local chamber of commerce and I've told them I'd donate a Gelsprinter, or give them a $200 reduction on a CLP22 or CLP27DN. I also told them we could work a trade for membership dues. I'm pretty sure if I stay close to them I should get the business. It's not any great shakes anyway, because there's no money in the deal, but I want to position myself for when they're ready to replace their analog Canon copier.

I attached the information regarding laser vs. inkjet for anyone who can benefit from it.

Thanks, if you guys think of anything else, please let me know.

did I miss something or have you had the chance to look at their true costs for this inkjet printer? if they will let you look at the last 12 months invoices for purchases they made for the cartridges you will have real world dollars for a monthly cost for the ink. usually that alone can cost justify even if you have todo a guestimate on the volume that goes on the printer.
JS:

I could not find the 1200c in my database, so I used a 1220c, the cpp seems to be in line with what you stated, however the real cost is provided in the CA sheet I have attached. Showing them this should get you a sale, also I had to used the ricoh 7300, the new info on the c811's are not posted yet.

Let me know what you think
Thanks for the input. I didn't ask them for their records for their expenses in the last year and this is an excellent idea. I think I can get the deal based on the fact that everyone else seems to be proposing 11 x 17 capable laser printers that will put them over $3k and I should be well under this.

The COG analysis should be useful. However, since I didn't have a volume to give you this is kind of speculative. I think Neal is right. I need to get a more accurate idea of their volume.

I really appreciate the help. I'll keep working on this and try to get the true volume.

Thanks!
