Business equipment supplier Konica Minolta says it will start laying off workers in July as it prepares to close both its 500 Day Hill Road and 550 Marshall Phelps Road facilities in September 2019.

The company notified the Labor Department that layoffs will begin July 23 and continue in phases until both operations close on Sept. 30, 2019.

The company in November said it planned to shutter its Windsor operations over the next 18 months and lay off all 431 employees, as it consolidates operations at its New Jersey headquarters. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed Tuesday is the first to specify layoff and closing dates.

Workers will be offered transfers to the company's headquarters in Ramsey, New Jersey, or other company locations, Brian J. Cupka, the company's general counsel and secretary, said in the notice. Konica Minolta has facilities in Milford and Shelton.

New Jersey gave the company $29 million in tax incentives through the state's Grow NJ program, New Jersey's NJBIZ.com, an online business publication, reported in December. Konica Minolta plans to spend nearly $20 million to expand its operations in Ramsey, adding 29,400 square feet and expanded parking, creating nearly 400 new jobs, the report said.

The corporate headquarters currently employs 474 people in two buildings with about 191,000 square feet, the report says.

Konica Corp., a 100-year-old Japanese manufacturer of photographic, copier, and document processing equipment, in 1971 entered into a joint venture with the former Royal Business Machines, which once had a major factory in Hartford.

In 1986, Konica formed its own business-machine subsidiary, with U.S. headquarters in Windsor.

In 2003 Konica Business Technologies merged with Minolta Corp.'s business products division and moved its corporate offices to New Jersey.

Despite the removal of corporate offices, most of the Windsor operation's employees remained in state.
