MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, Nov. 12, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Konica Minolta Business Solutions (Canada) Ltd. (Konica Minolta), a leader in the Graphic Communications Industry, presented two awards at Ryerson University’s 2018 GCM Awards last Wednesday. Ryerson student Corinne Su, whose design was featured on the cover of the event program, was the recipient of both awards sponsored by Konica Minolta.

Each year, the School of Graphic Communications Management at Ryerson University hosts an awards ceremony to recognize student achievements from the preceding academic year. With more than 200 family, friends, faculty and industry-leaders in attendance, dozens of awards were handed out to students, totaling more than $130,000 in scholarship funding by the end of the night. As a benefactor of this ceremony, Konica Minolta sponsored two awards and printed the embellished hardcopy programs for the event.

“Sponsorships that we have with companies, like Konica Minolta, are so important to us for a number of reasons,” said Jason Lisi, Chair of the School of Graphic Communications Management at Ryerson University. “It’s very important to us to know that we have the support of industry, and it’s also extremely important for the students to be able to engage with industry to see what’s happening on a day-to-day basis. The support that we have from companies like Konica Minolta is really paramount to what we do every single day at the school.”

The Konica Minolta Digital and Variable Data Printing Scholarship was awarded to the student with the highest standing in the class of the same name from the previous academic year. Digital and Variable Data Printing is an upper year course which teaches students how to design for and utilize the latest digital print and embellishment technologies. The Konica Minolta Digital Embellishment Award was awarded to the student deemed to have created the best digital embellishment design by a panel of Ryerson faculty and staff. The winning design was then featured on the cover of the event program.

“This is the second year that Konica Minolta has had the privilege of sponsoring this event, and each year it gets better,” said Norm Bussolaro, Sr. Director of Marketing, Konica Minolta Business Solutions (Canada) Ltd. “Having the opportunity to work with a school like Ryerson allows us to contribute to the growth of the print industry through our support of students who will be part of its future. I’d like to congratulate Corinne Su for winning both of our awards this year – she did a phenomenal job designing the program, and we had a fantastic time printing it.”

Konica Minolta provided students access to their JETVarnish digital embellishment printers, and then had them compete to design the cover of the event program. Dozens of entries were considered, but ultimately Corinne Su’s abstract cover design was chosen for its interesting blend of shapes, foiled-effects and varnish texturing.

“I’d like to thank Konica Minolta for giving us the opportunity to do more than just print ink on paper,” said Corinne Su. “They’ve given GCM students a better understanding of what printing technology is able to do right now, and how it’s developing. I think it’s a really great opportunity that Konica Minolta is giving GCM students to explore different technologies, like the one used to produce the program cover.”

In addition to the two directly sponsored awards, Konica Minolta also contributed to the Canadian Printing Industries Scholarship (CPIS) which is an annual grant given out on behalf of the Canadian Printing Industries Association (CPIA). This year, Ryerson students collectively received nearly $80,000 worth of CPIS scholarship funding.
