TOKYO, Dec 15 Asia Pulse - Fuji Xerox Co. has worked with Renesas Technology Corp. to create a system chip that significantly speeds up the printing capabilities of multifunction copy machines.

By designing dedicated hardware to perform the image-processing tasks normally done by software, the copier can print out as many as 60 color pages a minute. With software, the top output is limited to around 10-12 pages a minute because the only way to boost printing speed is to install a more powerful CPU and add more memory.

Fuji Xerox designed the image-processing circuitry and Renesas took charge of the overall layout of the system chip, including designing peripheral circuitry.

The new system chip will first be used in the Apeos series of multifunction copiers that Fuji Xerox plans to release in January.

Within 12 months, the company expects the system chip to be installed in roughly 20 per cent of its digital multifunction copiers and plans to boost that percentage to around 80 per cent in the future.
