A Florida man pleaded guilty to taking part in a scam to cheat Xerox Corp. of millions of dollars in a scam to resell toner for copiers.

Jason Haynes entered a guilty plea Monday in U.S. District Court in Rochester to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of filing a false tax return.

Haynes was co-owner of a company created in Florida to carry out the scheme, in which that company ordered large quantities of toner from Xerox but resold it to others in violation of their agreement with the company.

Federal prosecutors alleged the gambit cost Xerox $21 million from 2008 through June 2013, though defense lawyers have questioned the size of the loss.

Haynes and four others were accused of filing falsified records with Xerox in Webster in furtherance of the scheme, and with filing false tax returns on behalf of the company they created.
