BERNARDS TWP. – Most computer operations have been restored, including the township’s website, after the May 11 “Ransomware attack’’ on municipal computers by unknown hackers.

On Monday, June 1, Mayor James Baldassare Jr. told this newspaper that operations were returning to normal.

“There’s still some things pending – it takes time for the system to reload and get back up to speed,’’ he said. “It’s a slow, methodical process.’’

The mayor noted that the township did not pay out anything to the hackers. Additional information on the investigation is pending.

He also said he was told that no information was lost.

The attack was discussed during a Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, May 26. Officials said that evening that the municipal web site was nearing total restoration using backup data.

“We were able to restore all our system,” said Township Administrator Pat Monaco. “No one got our stuff. We have all of our data. It’s just a time-consuming process – it took almost a week to get the material copied and sent to us.”

He said the township’s Information Technology Department “has been working around the clock to get this all restored and up in place.’’

Two residents noted that the May 26 meeting could not be viewed on the township’s cable TV access channels as usual, so the only available viewing was via computer live streaming. read more here
