Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, will be showcasing its legal solutions for mobile printing, client confidentiality and case preparation at the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) Conference from August 26-30. During this year’s conference, which will take place in Washington, D.C., Canon will demonstrate to legal professionals how their secure access controls, full-featured and compact MFP devices utilizing embedded application software can help improve workflow to increase overall efficiency while maintaining secure access controls for confidential data.

“An efficient imaging platform can redefine the way attorneys, paralegals and legal personnel access, share and effectively manage office communications,” said Sam Yoshida, vice president and general manager, Marketing, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A. “The seamless integration of hardware, software and services delivered by Canon to legal professionals will help to ensure that every user experiences more efficient productivity in the workplace.”

According to ILTA’s 2011 Technology Survey, which represented more than 100,000 attorneys and more than 250,000 law firm technology users, nearly forty percent (38%) of the respondents indicated that Canon was the primary multifunction products (MFP) brand at their law firms.1 In a legal office setting, Canon solutions are equipped to complete tasks including:

Mobile Printing

According to the ILTA survey, 75% of law firms are now using tablets and over 50% of law firms are fully funding the purchase of smartphones for partnering firm members.1 The Canon Cloud Portal for imageRUNNER ADVANCE software helps meet the various demands of the legal industry by providing users with direct connectivity for scanning and storing paper documents to their Microsoft SharePoint Online and Google Docs cloud services from an imageRUNNER ADVANCE device. Law firms will also have the ability to print documents stored in their cloud service on demand.

With an increased emphasis on mobile print technology, Canon offers additional solutions to accommodate remote workers, including Canon Direct Print and Scan for Mobile, EFITM PrintMe ® mobile print solution and uniFLOW v5.1, allowing users to easily print from their smartphones and tablets via Canon and non-Canon printers.

The Canon Direct Print and Scan for Mobile client application, a combination of a multifunctional Embedded Application Platform (MEAP) application that runs on Canon’s imageRUNNER and imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFPs, along with an application that runs on either iPhone® and iPad® devices or BlackBerry® smartphones, provides iPhone, iPad and BlackBerry users with a driver-less and server-less mobile print and scan solution.

EFI PrintMe is a mobile print solution for the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE multi-function office products. The EFI PrintMe mobile print solution provides a method for mobile device users to send documents up to 100 MBs in size through EFI's PrintMe Service for output on Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFPs. Offering significant flexibility and convenience, the solution is ideal for mobile users who expect and demand print functionality from their mobile devices.

Canon uniFLOW v5.1 can allow law firm users who have internet-enabled mobile devices to easily print from their smartphones and tablets via Canon multifunction products, single function printers, and non-Canon print devices. In addition, law firms can control and secure the release of the print output to networked devices by tracking and statistically capturing all output related details and requiring users to authenticate at the device prior to print delivery.

Client Confidentiality and Secure Access Controls

Safeguarding client information is a key concern for all legal professionals. However, many law firms may be overlooking a significant potential threat: inappropriate use of their MFPs. Today's multifunction devices often have storage and communication capabilities that rival those of desktop computers. Canon offers a range of optimal solutions that help address potential security vulnerabilities, including solutions capable of requiring user authentication prior to device usage, the ability to limit network access to device, hard disk drive overwrite and encryption and comprehensive job tracking and auditing.

Case Preparation

Canon offers solutions that can help law firms streamline case preparation, increase collaboration among law firm personnel, and integrate seamlessly with document management systems. With the increased acceptance of digital formats, law firms need efficient ways to scan and send discovery documents to multiple recipients. Canon document distribution solutions including Canon Direct Print and Scan for Mobile, EFI’s Print Me Service and uniFLOW v5.1, help enable transformation of multi-step manual discovery processes – such as sending documents to attorneys for opposing counsel -- into custom, one-touch buttons. Canon also offers optimal integrated solutions for converting hard copy documents into electronic files for editing, enabling case files to be distributed via fax, email, or integrated into some of the most commonly used document management systems. Plus, indexing information can be included to integrate documents into a case management system.
