Konica Minolta Officially Jumps On The A4 Bandwagon In A Big Way With bizhub C35

Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A. has begun shipping its first A4 office MFP, the bizhub C35, which runs at 31 ppm in monochrome and color. The firm is marketing the new system, which lists at $3,499, as "fast affordable color," and is distributing through its direct-sales and dealer channels.

The bizhub C35 clearly demonstrates all of the advantages of an A4 system: its list price of $3,499 is almost half that of competitive A3 color MFPs in its class. For instance, a slower (20/20 ppm) A3 system marketed by a major competitor starts at $6,999. And, as an A4 MFP, the bizhub C35 has a smaller footprint--20.9"(w) x 20"(d) versus our competitor's footprint of 23"(w) x 25.2"(d).

At the same time, Konica Minolta hasn't reduced functionality or features--a look at its specs shows that the only difference between the A4 bizhub C35 and the firm's A3 office MFPs is no A3 support, which means more compact size, and a lower acquisition price. For instance, as with the firm's A3 MFPs, the bizhub C35 is built on the company's Emperon Print System and supports bEST (bizhub Extended Solution Technology) for creating custom applications that can accessed at the 4.3" color touch screen. It also includes reversing automatic document feeder for two-sided scanning; support for up to 110 lb. index stock (even in duplex mode); 120-GB hard drive for document storage; and extensive security features--including user authentication/restriction, create encrypted Adobe PDFs, and hard-drive overwrite and encryption—and the bizhub C35 is currently being evaluated for ISO 15408 EAL 3 certification. It's also equipped with Konica Minolta's full suite of PageScope application solutions.

Available toner cartridges and supplies aren't published yet, but the firm says the bizhub C35 uses its Simitri HD Color Polymerized Toner for enhanced image quality, and that high-yield toner cartridges will be available.

Scanning is also fully featured (but appears to be monochrome only) with scan to e-mail (supports LDAP), FTP, SMB, USB memory devices, and to hard drive, with support for TIFF, JPEG, XPS and compact and encrypted PDFs. Network TWAIN scanning is also provided, as is support for WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) for managing server files and folders, identifying authors and dates, locking documents, and tracking revisions.

Kevin Kern, Senior Vice President of Marketing, noted that the system can serve as complement to existing A3 systems in the enterprise, "Introducing our first A4 color MFP is part of our commitment to ensuring that customers can count on Konica Minolta for a comprehensive approach to satisfying all their digital-imaging needs. Whether as a standalone system or to complement a larger deployment of A3 systems throughout an organization, the bizhub C35 delivers an unmatched range of standard features and the market-leading performance expected of the Konica Minolta product line."

Other specifications are as follows:
• 800 MHz CPU, 1.5 GB memory, 10 BASE-T/100 BASE-TX/1000 BASE-T Ethernet network interfaces, USB 1.1 port for print from/scan to memory cards, and USB 2.0 port.
• 120,000-page maximum monthly volume.
• 1,350-maximum paper capacity.
• PCL 6, PostScript 3 and native XPS print drivers.

In sum, Wirth Consulting feels that the bizhub C35 is clearly a bargain and that this type of product is the wave of the future. In spite of its low acquisition price, there's clearly no skimping here. We've firmly believed that the Konica Minolta's Emperon Print System, PageScope suite and bEST are of the highest quality, and are glad to see them incorporated into Konica Minolta's first A4 MFP. We think both Konica Minolta dealers and direct-sales executives will be delighted to have the bizhub C35 now in their arsenal.

I set up a KM C35 in our demo room last week and was very impressed with it. Konica Minolta has made this a full featured A4 MFD. Toner based, not cartridge based system. Color\B&W, Scan to email, Scan to Folder, Fax, Copy Print (PCL & PS), it even has a solid LDAP search (for your Active Directory). It looks like a great Home office, small office, or a remote location. The best thing I can say about it, is I want one.

Nice job Konica Minolta!!!
