Curious as to know who is selling 3D printers here. We added the product about a year ago. We have had several very good prospects but no takers. We carry 3D Systems and they are about as screwed up as HP as a company. No Support, no one to call and now we realize the product is not that good, especially on the low end.

I have spoken to many dealers across the country, mega dealer and small, who have all said they wish they would have never gotten into it and haven't sold hardly any of them. If anything the 75,000.00 printer we have on our tech center floor is more of an advertising piece than anything.

The most recent prospect we had decided to move forward with Stratasys because the machine he was proposed by them at 90,000.00 was equivalent to the 3D Systems model that is 225,000.00. I had the specs confirmed from 3D systems and they basically said good luck if you can get him to spend 3 times as much to get the same thing.

Anyone having much luck moving systems?

Jason,

We looked hard at picking up a line but decided against it. Even now it seems like the wild west (Betamax vs VHS). We have also heard stories like yours where dealers had picked up a line (I think there are a half dozen technologies) had some initial success and then it kind of lingered. So we decided to wait to let the industry mature. I think Copier Dealers have the infrastructure to sell and support 3D Printers, but the market is still in too much flux.

Thanks fir sharing your experience, I wish I had better news for you,

Thanks Vince, You are correct. Everyone and their brother is coming out with a brand of 3D printer. We had some success with the schools but only in the consumer sized machines they can use in the classrooms that are 5,000.00 a piece. We thought it was going to be the next big thing and I think it will be at some point but just not yet. My dad is at the CDA meeting as we speak and he told me last night they had a 3d panel discussion among the group and no one was having success in the group according to him. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the 75000.00 printer on our floor. It is a nice advertising piece and gets a lot of attention and people in the door of the office so we may write it off monthly as advertising as one dealer has mentioned to us already. That dealer got in and spent about 250K on product and training and hasn't sold a single printer. We have probably invested 125k so far and I know it is not part of our strategy this year add to that. We even let our 3D specialist go in January as she did not have any interest in staying and selling copiers/solutions.
