I am seeing more of that with wide format recently and I am not sure why. Most of what I have seen has been where they are running the same volume as before but they just don't want to have a machine anymore so they outsource it and it doesn't seem to matter if the machine was leased to them for a $1 a month they still wouldn't do it.

I have to dial back the 1/2 price payments for one year. Most SMB business will only get lease approved for a six month Step lease. So for those customers wanting to preserve cash flow, a six month 1/2 price lease cost followed by a 60 month regular cost lease would be the best offer. On a $5k lease this would add approx $139.00 to the total finance costs spread over 66 months ($2.00 month).

Had a conference call with Epson Monday afternoon. They said the ended up with a 1 year warranty on the print heads but you can purchase an extended warranty for something like $250/yr.? I didn't write that down because the only thing that matters to me is what gets passed on to the customer and manufacturers warranties are seldom passed on. I guess he was just referring to the Epson C869R (25 ppm). We kept asking questions about the 100 ppm unit and I lost track which unit this information applied to. Sorry for the confusion. We have a launch on the 11th and he promised more info on the 100 ppm at that time.

A3 (11 x 17) and A4 (8 1/2 x 11) can be run at the same time with auto paper select making what you put in what you get out using mixed-originals and the mixed originals setting. The sizes you mention are European, but I'm sure they will work. As long as it's a standard document size it should work.

I have been glued to the TV watching Canada win Gold in the Women's Olympic Hockey final beating USA in a thriller. in the men's hockey, Canada beat the USA 1-0 and advances to the gold metal round. I am waiting for Barrack Obama to pay up on his losing bet to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and deliver two cases of beer! Productivity was not that great today in Canada as everybody who could was watching TV.

What are the best options to getting around an "evergreen" clause in a prospects lease contract? Specifically, if the clause renews the contract for 1 full year & they missed the timeframe to provide written notice to cancel? Is the prospect obligated to make every payment? Is there a way for me to win the business without having to refinance that full year of "evergreen" payments into the new lease? Your input would be appreciated. --Garrett

Hello Garrett - The dreaded "Evergreen" clause. This clause has caused many problems customer and dealers over the years. Depending on your situation, it may be tough for you to get the customer out of the contract early without some significant work on yours and the customers part. Based on your comment of "win the business", I am assuming that you are not the original dealer that put the customer into the lease with the an "Evergreen" renewal clause. I think everybody was thinking who in the copier industry was Samsung planning on buying. Nobody thought that it would be Samsung who got bought up. It is not like they needed the money. I think there was some corporate pride at Samsung that they would become #1 in any industry that they entered. It must have been obvious to Samsung that to conquer the consumer electronics industry is one thing put to conquer the business to business copier industry was unlikely.

This is a great article! One point that I disagree on is that HP will be entering the SMB market with this acquisition. What's the point? Dealers own the SMB market, and most dealers will sell whatever their customers already have. Where HP has the advantage is going into their national and global accounts where they dominate with MPS contracts on A4 devices. Finally, they can go back to the banks/governments/etc and kick out the Canon/Ricoh/Xerox A3 devices that are in there. And because HP...

No money means no R&D. Sharp is getting destroyed in Canada. Since Konica Minolta purchased Pitney Bowes' imaging division (Sharp's largest dealer in Canada), they've been offering customers massive incentives to flip their Sharp gear into KM bizhubs. I think there's more value in Sharp's direct channel base customer list than the actual technology. I've always found the MX series to be lacking in quality and ease of use. Receptionists and office managers are loaded with information because they are the primary users. I do understand where you are coming from in terms of your data that A4 MFPs are destined to displace A3 copiers at an accelerating rate. I also agree that A3 copiers vendors need to step up their game in terms of IT support and capabilities. A3 vendors still hold a couple of cards that IT centric print resellers do not have. 1). Feet on the street, experienced outside sales reps who can make 20 cold calls a day. We are in the B2B business which to some people means belly to belly 2).

Art right on dude! Time management is our best asset and killer at the same time. To be successful in sales is not 8:00 to 5:00! Before 8:00 after 5:00 PM even a late night, Saturday or Sunday. Take at least the 1 hour most reps can truly not account for (if being honest) and reinvest back into being productive. Right here is 5 hours per week. Sunday is a great time in the morning to prospect and send emails to executives. This does work.
