This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (First Week of February 2005)

Art Post ·
Struggle, struggle and more struggle seems to the topic for the month of January. I'm in a slump and need to pull out of it. Today I had three planned calls after driving back from our 2020 Kick-off meeting yesterday. It was more of laying the seeds to reap in coming months, actually more like the third quarter for this year. Two calls went well and the other company moved on me. Thus, I need to do more leg work. Seems next week will be a complete week of working the phones and emails! Enjoy...

Some additional tidbits from the show I was at for the last three days. I learned along time ago that in order to be successful at these types of events that you need to engage with people when they walk by your booth. You need to greet everyone that walks by and then ask them a question. The question I asked the most is where they were from, after getting a response I would then ask if they have a plotter or ask if they've ever seen a white board before. The questions sparked conversations...

Just a little more on the show that I'd like to share from this week. While standing at the end of our booth I was watching the reps from other companies in our section. So many peeps passed their booth and they did not say a word! No greeting, no communication, they waited for someone to speak to them first. Needless to say I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that many warm leads were lost because these reps were never taught the fine art of "hawking" while at a trade show. I was taught many years...

There's a cool thread I did years ago about the history of the fax. We sold tons of faxes in the eighties and had a lot of fun doing it. It was not uncommon to sell multiple units along with boxes and boxes of thermal paper. There's also a cool thread about some fun that we had with selling fax machines. COVID19 "Remote Working" Day Six of Sales

Art Post ·
Day Six and not much relief in site in New Jersey. We're still in lock down mode and now have the second largest number of infections in the US. There's a few cluster of infections in New Jersey that keep growing at an alarming rate. As of today there are no infections in the town where I live, however I don't think that will hold up much longer since more surrounding towns are reporting higher infections. Maybe the only savings grace is that we have the Ocean to east and the Bay to the...

Mondays, whether you hate or love them Mondays can sometimes define your week. Do you have a favorite Monday song? Mine is "I don't like Mondays " by the Boomtown Rats. Yes the eighties, yes I'm a boomer and yes the eighties was an incredible time to cut your teeth in the copier industry. I could write some stories that would rock your world because they surely did rock mine. COVID19 "Remote Working" Day Thirty-Five of Sales

Art Post ·
During the month of April we posted 66 blog and videos. Special thanx to Ray and Larry for their contributions. In my twenty years of hosting this site I've never seen this much inaction from the copier manufacturers. Just today I heard from an unnamed source (frak I always wanted to write that), that XBS former Global has axed up to 50% of their Market Place Presidents. A few days ago there was a another thread about lay-offs from Kyocera. Really? Does it really need to be this way? When...

COVID19 "Remote Working" Day Forty-Four of Sales

Art Post ·
It's 10:36PM on a warm night in New Jersey. Finally we have a day in the low eighties and there was no wind that blew in from the ocean. When that wind comes off the water we can be anywhere from 10-20 degrees cooler from inland parts of Jersey. There's also a chance that a week from today we just may be feeling the effects of a tropical storm that is suppose to move up the coast. If this storm becomes a tropical depression that stormed will be dubbed Arthur. What a great way to start off...

Re: Plotworks Issues?

Open it photoshop and do a save as and save it as a pdf. I've also had limited success doing this procedure with eCopy to resolve the issue. This issue has been going on since the beginning of wide format printing. These un-flattend pdfs explode into an enormous data stream when you attempt to print them. Its not your fault or the machine you sold. One other thing to try with these problem pdfs is to print them using the webPrint tool built into the plotter.....I bet they will just work when...

Re: W2400 Embedded Printing

Wallin Team ·
Here's an update on the printing problem. When using our windows drivers, it seems as though the print output is predicated on the application. For example, let's say you create a custom size that is 36"x100". If you were to print a 36"x50" file out of Catia (using the custom page size you set up previously), you will get 50" inches of drawing image and then 50" of blank paper. If you repeat this procedure but print a document out of MS Word, you will get 50" of image and then the W2400 cuts...

Attached is a spreadsheet that is using data that is almost 2 years old. Since it is in Excel, you may be able to update the numbers with current data. This was provided to me by Kevin Reidy who used to be the Sr. Strategic Products Sales Manager for Ricoh. I remember him saying at the time that if an HP Plotter was going through a roll of paper a month (150 prints) then you could place a 240W for less than the supply costs of the HP.

Re: Searchable PDFs processed by the Copier

Art Post ·
I've spoken to Monte (fellow P4P'er) on this subject and his take is that most of these units will choke when trying to process large files (many documents to be scanned). The other day I had an instance with an HP plotter where the customer had placed the documents on the USB drive and was then trying to print from the USB drive, after 2 hours they gave up. I will also test when it comes out and I'm hoping I'm done before December!!!

I am looking for the spreadsheet, will even try to post it here. The cost per square foot to plot on inexpensive plotter paper with ink (this does not include maintenance not parts, nor machine replacement ammortzing is .055 for paper and .075 for ink per square foot. My information on the ink yeild and cost came from HP's web site. The more ink you use the higher the cost. Art

Re: How to Justify a Large-Format Scanner, Part 1

Art Post (Guest) ·
I've actually got a few spreadsheets that I developed that will cost justify a wide format system based on the amount of rolls an ink plotter is doing per month. If anyone wants it, send me an email and I will forward. Another good point is some companies are paying upwards of $20 per scan for wide format, it doesn't take too many of these to cost justify a laser/LED wide format device.

Re: rw240 plotting from Mac

JasonR ·
true, no supported Mac driver for these products, however, any generic plotter driver should be ok as long as it has the page sizes you need defined. Don't expect things like media type and tray selection to work, those would need to be accessed thru the PPD. By the way, PPDs are just text files that define the characteristics of the printer. If you find a PPD that works for you, you can open the PPD in any text editor and tweak it a bit. Example: *% ********* *% EFI Information Block *%...

That PPT says Océ has no web printing solution, but it does indeed offer not one but two, the Océ Print Exec Workgroup and Océ Reprodesk can both accept jobs from the web. They are additional options. The digital competitive matrix Océ information is incorrect in several areas, mostly regarding the controller. The TDS controller is not "customer suplied" you can only get it from Océ. Every system comes with a controller. They are not "embedded" they are a seperate PC that the plotter and...

OK, try this: On the desktop, set up a new folder, and name it ABC. In scanner settings box, use 215 dpi. select "scanner" for format size. In the main scanner settings box, under settings - options - general tab, select set and file. The path for the scan to file lights up - set for C://desktop/ABC then CLICK APPLY. Open a new set in scantool, and scan a 36 x 24 document. 1. Does it appear on your screen correctly? 2. Does the TIFF / PDF image appear back in the folder ABC on the desktop?

Re: selling external vs embedded controllers

Wideformatguy ·
External Windows PC over embedded controller in general: Ricoh's standard Windows PC can be repaired or updated by the customer, dealer technician or PC dealer in case of PC issue. Faster repair or swap with a standard PC in case of PC failure. If the Ricoh's PC has an issue, offline copying capability is not affected. Internal controllers will typically be fully incapacitated until the issue is repaired. User controllable virus protection User controllable Operating System updates...

Re: Driver Installation Problem

JasonR ·
Ok. well, you can't do that =) You cannot run the setup program on the client PC, you have to browse to the printer and connect to it, allowing it to download the driver automatically. You can ONLY run the setup program on PCs that have a Ratio PCI card installed (i.e., directly connected to the plotter) If at this point you are getting the "no valid driver" error, then I suspect you have a network difficulty. You can try disabling the firewall on the Plotbase PC, and setting up a local user...

Yes. In AutoCad, go to plotter manager. Select the Plotclient HDI driver by double clicking. Select device options. Select custom. Select custom again in the middle of the screen that appears. On right side of next screen is a drop down - choices are Hide HDI dialog, enabe HDI dialog, or use HDI to Plotclient win. Select HDI to pc win. Now when your customer plots, the PC win will launch, allowing them to input job info.

Re: Ricoh Plotworks "Way To Screw Up the W3601" Updated!

ReproRog ·
Despite wide format volumes in the AEC world dropping the market still expects a certain level of job submission capability. It doesn't have to be at the level of PLP or ReproDesk, but I would hate to be going into a demo either: a) Justifying charging a significant % of the capital cost for something Xerox (AccXES), Océ (OPS) and others give away; or b) Trying to convince the customer he doesn't need job submission. I wrote a job submission tool (ReproRog.NET) some years ago and keep it up...

Re: Plotbase and Bluebeam PDF plotting issues

Wow! A blast from the past. I have run into this exact issue a number of years ago an a machine running PlotBase. The problem is the layers in the CAD file are not being flattened properly. The file explodes when you try to plot it. The one solution I found was to open the offending file in Photoshop and then use Photoshop to convert it to a pdf or tiff and then plot it. Other than that you'd have to educate the person creating the pdfs with Bluebeam on how to get their settings correct and...

Re: Plotbase Dilemma Question

fisher ·
Why are they upgrading the PC???? Simply because Microsoft isn't supporting???? If so, my advice would be not to change a thing. The PC should be dedicated to the plotter and as such should not be doing anything out on the interwebs that would invite a virus in. Big can of worms to open on a machine that is that old especially with the lack of support from the defunct manufacturer of the Ratio controller. Opportunity to upgrade to a modern machine with internal controller.
