Re: This Copier Changed My Sales Life 15 Years Ago this Week!

Those were good times indeed. Big commissions and big points on the Ricoh credit card to boot. Very short lived though. I was doing one or two wide formats a month in addition to all of the mid-volume color machines that customers were buying. By 2008 it was over and the wide format market has never recovered. In the past 12 months I've sold 4 wide formats and only one was a brand new unit.

I agree with you, by 2008 the big Aficio points and the big commissions were gone. All of the other manufacturers caught up with the technology. In addition Ricoh rested on their laurels with the 240W and waited way to long to bring an upgrade to the market place. I average about 1.5 new wide formats per month, GP is significantly down, but it's now a decent revenue generator. The Ricoh MP W6700SP is now three years old and needs a refresh. What does Ricoh have in the works?

Hopefully whatever they replace the 6700 with is another compact machine that can be carried up a flight of stairs like the old 240 was.

Unreal! I had to have this talk with a rep the other day. This girl sees the positive in everything and is about as happy go lucky as anyone I've ever met. She didn't believe me that buyers are liars. She got strung along with a customer that was going to lunch with her, having a glass of wine in the evening with her, all the while telling her she would have an order soon. She stopped by her office and there was a brand new machine sitting there and it had been there for a couple weeks.

That's awful Art. I'm sure many of us can relate to that story in one way or another. This was a first for me; I was working a new account for over a year, they were completely unorganized and had no handle on the printing/copying expenses throughout the country. The whole time my contact was telling me that we were going to get the business and that I've shown him that his account was mismanaged. Then the infamous "ghosting" occurred, no calls back, no responses to e-mail. Then at 10pm one...

Preach! Oh how about this one: when the net - new prospect speaks horribly about their current vendor, how bad their service is, and how much they want to move to someone else. You provide a fantastic proposal, they tell you how great it is, and thats when the crickets begin. You find out a couple weeks later when you finally get them on the phone that they decided to stay with their current vendor, because of one of the following reasons: 1. They didnt want to upset the status quo 2. All of...

No I'm not. In the case of Formax, you would call them and they would give you the name of the Authorized Dealer and I'm assuming it would be the same case with Muratec since there are no dealer locators on their web sites. Is there really a need to have 6-8 dealers covering the same geo area along with the Direct channel. Here's an example, in my territory in which we are Authorized I can't remember the last time I received a lead. Some of the manufacturers sights are slanted to delivering...

This Copier Changed My Sales Life 15 Years Ago this Week!

It's late on Friday night, for most their work is over for the week. Me, I need to do updates and frankly I've been lagging in my blogging as of late. It's not because I don't want to write, it's mainly because there hasn't been something that triggered me to write. Nothing unusual in sales, nothing unusual in the field and I've had my nose to the grindstone looking to hit numbers. Until tonight when I needed to post up my series "This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago this Week" .

Ricoh has a webinar scheduled for tomorrow, "National Kick-Off". I 'm a Savin dealer and really have a hard time staying as a sole source dealer after some of the stuff I've seen over the last couple of years. We're starting to feel like Beta testers out here. I'm not sure if I should be happy or insulted if they try to sell me some of the school districts and counties they've taken from me. We'll see tomorrow I guess.

Interesting webinar. It makes complete sense for Ricoh to do this, after all they have been selling hardware and service at dealer cost or below and just shipping supplies to anyone who asks. They finally figured out that they can't actually make any money doing that. I had a direct proposal that said "we don't charge for excessive toner usage (we do) we don't even care how much toner you use". They can't even update the Savin or Lanier site. Being a Savin dealer I have people rather frequently who go on the site and are turned off by how old and outdated it looks.

Will be interesting to see what, if anything, ever comes of it. We have talked a lot before about leads from the manufacturer. Maybe, just maybe, that request a quote will be shared with dealers as well. Of course with is being a Savin dealer I won't hold my breath that "Ricoh" will send us leads. I've gotten a couple in the last few years but they came from the Savin website requests. Not sure what I've gotten from Ricoh lately except heartburn and stress.
