Just a short update in reference to the account I was speaking about. The IG came back with many additional questions today, asking if the cost per page could be lowered, the annual cost of the maintenance agreement, and the price of the system. I stated NO on all accounts. We had started with a 25ppm color A3 device and then moved to an A4 color device. They were not even happy with that price. No, we are not doing any of those agreements with our MFP's. With the printer the device billing would not include the drum, or fuser. Client would pay for those. Device billing is a practical maintenance agreement for the new A3 ink based MFP's. Epson will be launching their 100ppm color device shortly. The only consumables is the print head and the ink. It's rumored that the print head will be warranted for 3 years. In addition the print head is very costly. The idea would be to charge...

Client Pro's: Lower purchase or lease price for hardware Faster print speed than laser based vs same segment ink vs laser Unlimited pages No overage billing No unpredicted costs with overages Less downtime than laser Client Cons: Quality of prints or copies may not be equal to laser (does not matter if prints or copies stay in house) Print Head cost Ink cost may be higher than color laser, however that may be off-set by the lower purchase price Anyone care to add?

I'm not sure about PaperCut with the HP products, I do know that PaperCut is supported with the Epson 100ppm color device. scan2email, scan2folder, secure, authentication all yes with both devices. Not sure about account track as a standard feature

FYI: Toshiba, overall, is in the top ten for R&D Spend-to-Sales ratios. "Bottom dweller" really is not a fair use of words. With any device manufacturer, product is only as good as its dealer support. Get references if need be. RE: maintenance; The asker is talking B&W devices not color. Regardless, get the maintenance. Fewer spikes in copy quality or hardware issues because you'll make that phone call to fix rather than putting up with poor copy quality, etc. for fear of how much it...

TimB: Thanx for the comment! I believe you with the top ten in R & D for Spend to Sales ratios, but I don't R & D being conducted for copiers not like Canon, Xerox, KonicaMInolta & Xerox. I've only been around 9 years, but when I first started, we were selling the old Ricoh AP3800CMF (A3 color printer w/ a scanner kit attached to make it an MFP) since the 1224c/1232c was such a bust. In our Service Agreements, black toner was included in the CPP, but color toner was billable. When trying to get those customers to upgrade to the 2238c, I would create a cost per page analysis (since toner was included in our CPP for the 2238c) and had several furious customers who thought we...

I remember it well and at ComDoc, in the early 80's we sometimes put the offer out there without it being a formal price plan. I think the customer realized that a lot of the toner they purchased and stocked was useless at end of the machines life. It was like a primer with a customer who had that and TCO on their mind, it was a way to close them. Equally, I remember taking it one step further in the early 90's with copy management - the first all inclusive (hardware, service, supplies)...

Those were good times indeed. Big commissions and big points on the Ricoh credit card to boot. Very short lived though. I was doing one or two wide formats a month in addition to all of the mid-volume color machines that customers were buying. By 2008 it was over and the wide format market has never recovered. In the past 12 months I've sold 4 wide formats and only one was a brand new unit.

I agree with you, by 2008 the big Aficio points and the big commissions were gone. All of the other manufacturers caught up with the technology. In addition Ricoh rested on their laurels with the 240W and waited way to long to bring an upgrade to the market place. I average about 1.5 new wide formats per month, GP is significantly down, but it's now a decent revenue generator. The Ricoh MP W6700SP is now three years old and needs a refresh. What does Ricoh have in the works?

Often times customers don't realize what a big impact paper can have on the performance and quality of their devices. I always liken the damp/humid paper to "what do you dry your hands with? @Art Post A quick perusal of the world wide web shows that a carton of paper isn't appreciably more, if at all. It looks like some/most papers have the color lok symbol, but it is another qualifying questions a good rep should at least be asking/seeing. Kind of like how once upon a time ADA compliant devices were all the rage and now it's just standard.

Thanks for commenting I am not worried about labor, I am more worried about consumables and yield parts. Our mif (mostly SMB) is producing less b/w and more color. And we have many customers who has outsourced large print jobs - fx. real estate agents who prints flyers. I am sure that they would bring that back home if the only cost is time and paper. The difference in our iDaaS model is that volume DOES impact cost. Other flat rate model offer a rate with no impact on volume. Our program uses the current customer volume, service efficiency, margin expectations as well as our data on over 4 million devices to help remove the variables and concerns over switching to a no meter billing model. We can also adjust for color ratio's. So with the possible exception of print for pay, production and maybe some schools there is no reason not to...
