Where will Staples Inc go with DEX acquisition?

Art Post ·
By Andy Braithwaite - 6 March 2019 Staples’ move for managed print firm DEX Imaging is intriguing for both office technology and office supplies resellers. Our colleagues at The Imaging Channel held a very well-attended webinar last week on Staples’ acquisition of DEX and it was interesting to hear the thoughts on the deal and insights from the assembled panel of imaging supplies, copier/printer and managed print services (MPS) experts. One speaker called the transaction a “match made in...

Is the Imaging Channel a Bubble getting ready to Burst?

Ray Stasiezcko ·
Earlier last year I suggested that the acquisition activity through the imaging channel seemed a bit out of touch with the realities of the market. My argument stems from the lack of diversification in products, services and their business structure. I questioned then and still question the logic in buying up a declining deliverable, a deliverable which continues to evaporate revenues and profits. Without a change in structure and product diversification, it seems many will soon realize what...

You do have a point about the declining deliverables. But there are other dealers that are raising the stakes with IT and Content. One of our big initiatives this year is to have double digit growth with content.

The dealers will also have to redefine how they deliver to the majority of their print customers.

When it becomes time to change the deliverables it will be too late for many of them. Personally, I don't think the change will come that quick to SMB accounts. Larger accounts without a doubt, going to come down to geographical markets here in the US.

Investment companies buying independent copier dealerships

Art Post ·
I received this email from a Print4Pay Hotel member the other day. @gap Hello Art, For the last two or three years investment companies have been buying independent copier dealerships. We've been seeing this all throughout the United States and I know of others in other parts of the world. The conversation with an industry professional that is smarter than me he suggested that this is a Wall Street ploy being architected by the investment community. The goal is to purchase several different...

Yes, I believe that this is definitely the strategy. Konica Minolta/Danka, Ricoh/IKON, Xerox/Global Imaging, and Staples/DEX are prime examples of this coming to fruition. I expect that there will be more of this type of activity in the very near future and I'm just waiting for it to happen. I think that Xerox and HP are two ideal candidates to purchase a mega dealer based on their recent channel acquisitions in the UK (and Xerox in Canada). Both companies have also stated that they will...
