Imaging Channel, DEX Imaging and Staples oh, Imagine the Probabilities

Ray Stasiezcko ·
Thanks for chatting with Staples. Yes, Sir, we can deliver the New A4 you bought online. How’s Tuesday? Can we bring it with your supply order? Yes, one more question can you pick up and dispose of my old copier? Yes, we can let's discuss that when we come out to perform your managed print assessment. Thanks again for choosing Staples. End of Chat For Now!! 2019 is indeed starting with a bang. The Imaging Channel changed on Friday the 8th of February. Well, that’s what some will say. In...

Is The Imaging Channel's Whitewashing Threatening Its Innovation?

Ray Stasiezcko ·
Well, The Imaging Channel is used to the Whitewashing in explaining how great things are even when common sense disagrees. The channel's ability to whitewash is unprecedented. However, unfortunately, now it's affecting the channel's aptitude to reacting to severe threats and holding back its innovation. Some unfortunately even believe that everything is all right, as the whitewash paints over the market's realities. So, I thought it would be valuable to highlight some severe current threats...

It’s Uber’s 10th Birthday, A lesson for The Imaging Channel's Venture Capitalist.

Ray Stasiezcko ·
How could the Staples/DEX Acquisition effect a dealership in the Imaging Channel, or its VC group's Exit plans? Here's a thought to consider. The change in valuation will be the greatest threat to all dealers both independent, or those V.C Backed mega dealers who continue buying growth with redundant deliverables within a disrupted infrastructure. Everyone in the industry should think about Taxi Medallions. These medallions value vanished as the infrastructure of the Taxi deliverable was...

Is the Imaging Channel a Bubble getting ready to Burst?

Ray Stasiezcko ·
Earlier last year I suggested that the acquisition activity through the imaging channel seemed a bit out of touch with the realities of the market. My argument stems from the lack of diversification in products, services and their business structure. I questioned then and still question the logic in buying up a declining deliverable, a deliverable which continues to evaporate revenues and profits. Without a change in structure and product diversification, it seems many will soon realize what...

Here's something I'm not understanding at least with the copiers and distribution. Dex has dealer agreements with with Kyocera, KonicaMinolta and Canon in their geographical locations. Could those dealer agreements be transferred or renegotiate with Staples? If so could Staples then offer all of those devices nationwide? I was just on Dex's web site and at least for now their web sites tells me that they are still is the "push" mode and not the "pull" mode for their copiers aka imaging...

Thanks for the comments. I would say all manufacturers are meeting in their conference rooms and discussing this. Of, course I would also imagine that a couple manufacturers were more than likely presented some hypotheticals before the announcement. This acquisition is a strategic one and there will be many more implications which arise from it. I would believe that there will be another dealer more than likely another mega dealer which joins DEX at Staples. Once staples has a national...

I agree that in order to move to that next step Staples will need multiple mega dealers to compete on a national level. If only on the dealers would follow the migration of print there is still more than enough to go around if they want to stay in the imaging channel. Yes, office prints are declining, I agree with that. But wide format, grand wide format, and label presses are all in growth mode. One of the largest print events I ever attended was SGIA with more than 20K in attendees that...

Those are vertical products and markets it will take different business plans with different infrastructures to capitalize on them. Selling high end label printers, wide format inside a dealership where there is thousands of MFP in the dealership s MIF makes it easier to offset the delivery cost of products and services like label printers and wide format. When the dealer’s MIF is challenged by new rules and new players. Lots will change.

ty, thus the reason to change. If I were to get back in the business for my-self I would only target wide format, grand wide format and label presses. I would want to part of a declining deliverable. I would choose growth and that wide format channel is ripe for BTA dealers

This seems like an opportunity more than anything for the small to mid-sized dealer. People buy from people and I have no doubt that a giant like Staples will put a hurting on the giants of the industry BUT these changes will open as many doors as it closes and then some for the small to mid size dealer who services the heck out of their customers.

Could one of the goals of Staples be to enter the A3 market? Although the transition from A3 to A4 is 'soon to come' for many, many years now, it still didn't happen. With this acquisition, Staples has possibilities to sell A3 equipment of Kyocera, Konica Minolta and Canon, and that’s where currently the money (still) is... Or am I completely wrong in this assumption?

Home run Ray! Look at who are the buyers now. They think different they act different. Don’t go to market with what worked years ago. Look how commerce moves, amazon, Uber, And others. How can we add value and slow the sale. How can we do value to them. I’m writing this on my phone in my gym. It’s a whole new world

You do have a point about the declining deliverables. But there are other dealers that are raising the stakes with IT and Content. One of our big initiatives this year is to have double digit growth with content.

The dealers will also have to redefine how they deliver to the majority of their print customers.

When it becomes time to change the deliverables it will be too late for many of them. Personally, I don't think the change will come that quick to SMB accounts. Larger accounts without a doubt, going to come down to geographical markets here in the US.

Investment companies buying independent copier dealerships

Art Post ·
I received this email from a Print4Pay Hotel member the other day. @gap Hello Art, For the last two or three years investment companies have been buying independent copier dealerships. We've been seeing this all throughout the United States and I know of others in other parts of the world. The conversation with an industry professional that is smarter than me he suggested that this is a Wall Street ploy being architected by the investment community. The goal is to purchase several different...

Yes, I believe that this is definitely the strategy. Konica Minolta/Danka, Ricoh/IKON, Xerox/Global Imaging, and Staples/DEX are prime examples of this coming to fruition. I expect that there will be more of this type of activity in the very near future and I'm just waiting for it to happen. I think that Xerox and HP are two ideal candidates to purchase a mega dealer based on their recent channel acquisitions in the UK (and Xerox in Canada). Both companies have also stated that they will...
