Re: Is The Time Right for Copiers to be Made in The USA Again?

SalesServiceGuy ·
I wonder if there is a preferred supplier of copiers to the Trump organization? Any arm twisting would likely start there. With the USA's withdrawal from the TPP, a relocation of the copier industry seems unlikely. Multiple copier manufacturers already produce their toner in the USA. Living in Canada, with the high US $, a copier produced in the USA would be a distinct disadvantage. I am reasonably certain that the USA is the largest market for copiers in the world.

Lots of manufacturers used to make the claim assembled in the US, Ricoh and Xerox in particular. I would very much welcome marketing products not made in China Singapore, Thailand and the like- we have lots of capable workers here in the US. I used to be in the manufacturing of Servers for HP (working for a Contractor to them). Eventually, we lost the contract to a competitor, in another state, because their labor was going to be $2 a machine less. This of course builds up with thousands of units. Eventually, the whole contract went first to Mexico, then to Singapore (we were already getting most of our sub-assemblies from Singapore anyway), and eventually to China. I went for one state to the other, then almost went to Mexico...

I'd love to see it but I think in the end very few people really care if it is made here. Many people claim that they want to buy US made goods but as soon as they have the opportunity to do so they go right back to the foreign, cheaper goods because of the cost. This whole buy USA thing has gotten so much attention recently due to Trump, but until people change their tune about wanting it as cheap as possible nothing will change. I agree with Jason. It would be nice to have technology manufactured in the US in general. But at the end of the day our labor expenses and manufacturing process automation/quality assurance seem lacking in the globalized landscape. Manufacturing copiers and printers here would also involve moving the manufacturing from existing plants. In a market space where existing manufacturing is below capacity, it would make the case harder to move one. To provide a solution - why don't we reinvest in...

Bain files for China antitrust approval on $18 billion Toshiba chips deal

Responding to this question could immediately dissolve into a political debate. One fact is clear and that is that tariffs are essentially taxes that become Federal Gov't general revenue that can be used anyway the Gov't desires such as fund its massive deficit. Whatever money the Trump Administration gave away to its citizens in its tax cuts of 2017 it is now going to claw back with higher taxes disguised as tariffs.

More than a few copier/ printers are manufactured in Thailand and the Philippines due to low labor costs. I do not know but I think these products tend to be more low end A4 and printer products. I think most A3 product is made in China. I can only speak for Toshiba but I know the majority of North American toner is made in North Dakota. As I am from Canada, I am hoping with fingers crossed that this very likely US tariff war with China will not effect us.

I disagree that the tax cuts are going to claw their way back with higher taxes disguised as tariffs. In the end, what Trump wants is fair trade practice...

One of those lines is for "copier parts and copier accessories". For those that are not living under a rock, we know that most of Japanese copier companies have manufacturing facilities in China.
