Why I'm Stoked About Selling Standalone Scanners Again

Art Post ·
For years and years I wanted nothing to do with selling desktop and workgroup scanners. I learned the hardware many years ago that selling desktop and workgroup scanners an exercise in wasting my fraking time. Years ago when I first saw those desktop scanners from Fujitsu I thought they would sell like hotcakes. I thought, I could sell these to everyone that had a desk and processed paper. I had the talk track down, I was able to get the decision makers to buy in, however when it came down...

Thanx to those Print4Pay Hotel members for email me these quotes and proposals. I really enjoy evaluated these because they can give me a picture of what the competition may be doing with hardware and service pricing. I'll even go as far calculating what the average cost per page is for black and color. In most cases there's not that much I can do with my the published cost per page. However if you think out of the box and add some creativity you can alter your cost per page in competitive...

Competitive Wide Format pricing

Take a look at what I found What's the problem with this site? I can't believe they are listing available options that are only for copiers. the site even allows you to add those option to the cart. What a surprise to the end user when they can't get the envelope adapter or the fax option they...

Ricoh America's Trying to Poach Dealer Account?

Art Post ·
First, let me state that what I'm about to post came from a long time P4P member.  He emailed me a few minutes ago, in reference to a Ricoh America's Direct sales person that contacted one of his accounts via email and sent pricing via email.  Our P4P member is a Ricoh dealer and has had this client for 7 years, in addition the entire MIF is owned by the dealer. "This is our account for the past 7 years and we have all the MIF. This guy knows better and I want his rear end in a...

Losing is the Key to Winning!

Special thanx to Larry and Jason who gave me a few ideas with this next blog! We hate to lose right? Nothing grinds my gears more, than losing a prospect. I expect that I should be able to secure an order from all of my prospects. I expect to bat 1.000, however the reality is far from that. I definitely lose more deals than I win. In fact, I lose about 65% of the time. Is losing 65% of the time a bad thing? I don't think so, because I know that every lost deal moves me close a to obtaining...

57 Days of Selling "Day 51"

Art Post ·
Count em, six fracking days left in the year! As with most of my months and quarters it seems that hitting or not hitting my numbers is going to come down to the wire. Why is that? I'm thinking I can answer that. My answer for coming down to the wire, is because I was not able to develop enough opportunities to meet my opp goal of $600K. To date, I believe I'm somewhere around $350K in opportunities. Having the $600K in opps around the first week of December would have given me a cake walk...

Anyone seeing any uptick in promo activity from Lexmark in the last quarter or so? Hearing some anecdotes about Lexmark growing sales in N. America, and growing some segments (A4 B&W, A3 Color). I think this could be replacement cycle related (probably replacing both these product lines soon ^), but wondering if anyone seeing anything in terms of more aggressive Lexmark pricing/promos.

Epson WorkForce Enterprise WF-C20590 & What I Heard at BTA East

Art Post ·
Wednesday and Thursday of this week I was at BTA East in Philly. I had the chance to speak with many dealer principals and I kept asking their thoughts about the new 100ppm color A3 MFP from Epson. One principal told me that he was not interested because when the device is outfitted with the finisher the system slows to 50ppm. Another stated that was not correct and the device slows to 80% of the rated speed. Pricing, rumor had it that pricing was going to be somewhere in the 10K range. I...

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago, The Last Week in November 2008

I guess the BIG news of the week from ten years ago was ere 50 cuts that Ricoh performed that week. However, that was right after the IKON purchase and within four months (end of Japanese) there was to be major cuts with high level legacy employees. Seems to me that one of the covenants if the Ricoh purchase was that all high level Ikon peeps would replace those at Ricoh. AS Vince would say "that's my two cents". Enjoy all of the threads from ten years ago this week. Weekend Copier Notes...

They are never going to get their act together. I spoke with Jim Corridi at the CDA meeting several months ago and he told me big things were coming down the pipeline very soon because he agreed it would be hard to upgrade 3406WD systems with a 3406WD system. He also, however, acted like the Epson was going to be the latest and greatest thing for all of us that sell wide format. Not sure why since we don't typically mess with the ink jet machines. You can find the Epson's extremely cheap...

We were talking with KIP but my father did not want to order 2 or 3 machines at one time for inventory like they wanted us to. I talked with Oce' and the guy was pretty much like talking to a wall and said he didn't need anymore dealers in his territory and pretty much hung up. I would like to have an alternative and not be at Ricoh's mercy. I have tried to upgrade 3406's with 3406's and it doesn't go over that well.

Jason, Talk to KIP again I have never heard of KIP asking dealers to stock machines(maybe one for the demo floor). Plus KIP is releasing the new 800 series next month and these machines look like they should be good sellers. 8 full color "D"s per minute and 10K less that the Oce colorwave. We sell or have sold all the major lines of wide format, KIP, Oce, Ricoh, even going back to Xerox. All our sales reps and techs prefer the KIPs. GR

The Epson thing is a joke. You can buy it on-line for less than you can buy it from Ricoh and so can your customer. I've got a customer right now who is at end of term on a 48 month lease on a LW426 and I have no choice but to go back to them with the exact same machine......oh and my cost is now higher for that same machine thanks to Plotworks (which gets thrown in the garbage). Would love to have KIP now.

I do find the Ricoh's to be very reliable. What they need is speed though, IMO. Have worked with a steel maker on some projects and he has 4 big Oce's that run all day long, 5 days a week. He loved the 3406 but said he would have to buy about 8 or 10 of them do the same work the 4 high speed Oce's run. He wouldn't bite on the 7140's either.

Call that KIP sales Rep again and make a deal with him. If you can get the deal with 2 KIP 9900s (those will replace the 4 Oce's), then you get to be a KIP dealer. He will also spend half as much in toner as those Oce machines just eat toner.

Wide Format is in a big transition right now, I know KIP is no longer going to be putting any R&D into monochrome printing anymore. Its all color from this point forward, I know Oce (or CSA) is thinking the same way. I can't speak for Ricoh but at this point why would you put any money into it. Ink jet is not the answer ether so the Epson deal in not going to get you into too many doors. If the KIP 800 series is priced right (somewhere in the $25K-30K area) a lot of them will be going...

The Epson argument has been going on for years. I brought one product in as a complement product and direct print production sales fought for Epson devices as part of the portfolio. I wouldn't allow it. However, with Vellek in charge of all product marketing, a lot changed. Overall profitability on Epson to Ricoh is about 7-9%. Plus there is no way to lock a customer into a toner inclusive deal when they could by it anywhere on the web. Losing proposition for Ricoh, winning for Epson. I ran...

We don't sell the Epson, I do hear that many Ricoh wide format dealers are looking to change. The W3602 is due out something this spring, Ricoh is waiting to exhaust inventories on the W3601. I have not sold a W3601 yet this year and believe I only sold a handful last year, I used to sell at least a dozen a year. The W3602 will have the GUI as the color systems and many of the same features, sad but the GUI and the MFP features will still put us way behind with the likes of KIP & Oce

nice, I guess you can make a pretty good argument for color when there is a decent amount of color plotting that is produced, right? What is the estimated cost per square foot for color?

Re: Ricoh & Epson = "perfect together" NOT!

We are getting $.03 per sq ft. That is less than the monochrome machines, this is why I don't see us placing anymore new monochrome machines. We will place some refurbished ones to the customers that have to go low budget. Not only that it blows the Oce Colorwave away. We have a customer who makes these 20 ft full color GIS aerials that cost him $21.00 each to run on the Oce (his numbers not ours) we ran them on the KIP at a cost of $1.76.
