Re: Is the time right for MFP Manufacturers to only offer...

fisher ·
Not just color. We could see a big consolidation of speed bands too. If certain manufacturers can make low cost 40 and 50ppm engines that retail for under $4,000 do we really need to have 25ppm engines that retail for over $5,000?

txeagle24 ·
If they offer them for the price of black & white units, yes. If they try to have the same price point as current color systems, they would lose out on price to any manufacturers that continue to make b/w only systems. Additionally, they would have to have a multi-tier billing system for color so as to not scare off people that have intentionally stayed away from color. The industry billing systems (e-Automate, OMD) would need to make that easy to manage & bill as well.

Agreed that the cost of color would have to be the same as the current black systems. I for one would like to only offer color, I think it would be better for the industry. I also believe that the color machines don't cost that much more to make the black systems. I'd bet that the margins are the 20-25-30 ppm nlack systems are huge from the manufacturing side.

I'm in agreement about he value at the end of lease for A4's. It was a topic of discussion that I had with two premier wholesalers. It's often heard "that one mans junk is another mans treasure." This can be true with a savvy buyer as long as they can get 3 year old A4's or less for a song and a dance. These would be perfect devices to put back in the field under a DaaS plan, even if it's only for a year or two. That model is probably the only potential I see for the off lease A4 devices.

The ability to purchase a used A4 copier for like $25.00 to $50.00 each is not the full story. Depending on where the meter read is you might have to spend an additional $350.00 on consumables to get a 50 cpm black only desktop Lexmark working and up to $1,400.00 to a Lexmark 40 cpm colour 4 ready to go.

Re: "MFP Wars" Hi Speed A3 MFP's vs A4 MFP's

Ray Stasiezcko ·
Art, one of the problems is dealers servicing a machine for $30.00 a month. however, the reality is the industry has allowed the sales engine to destroy the service model. selling full service on A3 for .006 or less in volumes of 5k a month. Dealers were chasing sales revenue as they sacrificed service profits. As volumes continue declining so will margins. Dealers will begin realizing that all the A3 service they gave away is too costly to manage and the shift will begin. The A4...

Hi Ray I agree with the silliness of the low cost per page for A3. However most dealers have escalators that can raise the price as much as 10-15% per year whether it's A4 or A3. AS far as the $30 per month, almost no one will send out and invoice for $30 It's either billed quarterly or annually. One thing the A4 manufacturers won't due is too sacrifice the consumables. I also believe that dealers will always find a way to make their profit, whether it's Daas, flat rate, or seat based. I...

Art, another piece of the equation is that monthly units placed are 45% to 74% mono A4 in the segment 3 and segment 4 speed range. Online retail is $170 to $600 where used A3’s are three times that amount. The real question here is what these placements are doing to the service department revenue and eventually to staffing.

Re: "MFP Wars" Hi Speed A3 MFP's vs A4 MFP's

fisher ·
I've always sold A4 machines where they are a fit. There are very few A4 devices that offer a low CPC. Some carry CPCs that are very high. A bigger issue in many placements is that the Automatic Document Feeders on most A4 machines are not robust enough to meet the copy scan and fax demand. Many are complete garbage. In fact I've seen the quality of the Domument Feeders on A4 units go backwards in the last couple of years as if the document feeder is an afterthought or it is where the...

Slight correction...both the IM 430F and the IM 430Fb are 43 ppm. Additional info...the 430F (SP 501) has a Service Maintenance platform while the 430Fb (SP 502) has a User Maintenance platform. The SP 510 and SP 502 are printer only versions of their respective MFP's. As far as I know, the SP's and the IM 350 (350F without a standard fax) have not been launched yet. It is interesting to note that the service training does not reference the MP 301SPF or the MP 402SPF at all. The new IM units...

For me, it would be roughly 15%, verticals would be healthcare and law. When an A4 does take the place of an A3, do customers have concerns about the higher CPC? When I see that there are zero to a small number of 11x17 pages printed. CPC not that big of a deal, and I don't do bids so I cant comment on that. @Monte @Jason H @Old Glory @jredmon @John

Thanks Art, yeah, I wouldn't think the CPC change would be that big of a deal understanding the customer is probably saving $ on hardware costs by going with an A4 vs. A3.

From what I seen in the past and what I showed the customer was that many times they could almost double their speed but keeping their price about the same. I sold a ton of Lexmarks and Samsung A4 devices. And yes I would live to see some heavy duty A4s to go into schools, municipalities, and larger companies.

Re: A4's Replacing A3 MFPs

Old Glory ·
How would you define "Heavy duty A4's"? There is a reason why Ricoh has both the MP 6055 and the MP 6503. Placing an A4 vs. an MP 6055 can be a big enough stretch depending on desired accessories but it will be awhile before I would ever consider placing an A4 where I feel an MP 6503 is required.

Re: A4's Replacing A3 MFPs

I sell a lot of A4 into my medical accounts and small business accounts. It really comes down to page volume and how the machine is to be used. I have yet to see an A4 that is built tough, has a low CPC, has a good document feeder, is user friendly and can handle 20,000 pages per month. Not to mention the lack of stapling and tray shift finishing.

Xerox floats the idea of buying HP on the same day that the Fuji Xerox/ Xerox tussle seems to be resolved. Does that sound like a coincidence? I think Art hit the nail on the head when he said "In addition they would not have to purchase MFP's from Fuji Film in the future." I think this is Xerox's way of letting Fuji Xerox know that they do not hold all of the cards.

It's been a bit since I've commented here, sorry Art! Great read on paper and why it's important. @Art Post A quick perusal of the world wide web shows that a carton of paper isn't appreciably more, if at all. It looks like some/most papers have the color lok symbol, but it is another qualifying questions a good rep should at least be asking/seeing. Kind of like how once upon a time ADA compliant devices were all the rage and now it's just standard.

6 Reasons Why Canon's New 715iF A4 MFP Kicks Butt

It's not that often that I get the chance to blog about something other than a Ricoh MFP. It's all not that often that I get excited about an MFP from another manufacturer. However, the introduction of the Canon iF715 imageRUNNER ADVANCE Series has me chomping at the bit for a 75pp A4 device that I could sell. The Canon 715iF has an "up to" print speed of an amazing 75 pages per minute! The reason I mentioned "up to" is because many MFP's will grind and run slower with different files.
