Re: top challenges faced by sales reps on a day to day basis
One of the biggest obstacles up until recently, was having to answer to a Sales Manager, who was totally incompetent, and the micro management he adopted in trying to gain kudos with management for his failure to produce a winning team formula was ridiculous. Fortunately, they have since given him the boot, and life is starting to get back to normal.

Re: top challenges faced by sales reps on a day to day basis
Wow. No poll answer regarding the rep’s activity…interesting. Over the years I have learned that if you work hard and SMART, you’ll hit your numbers. I also think that there is a condition that affects a lot of sales reps in virtually all industries. It is a type of an iron deficiency disorder. It is when iron in your blood is transformed into lead that forms in your rear end. If someone bounces from dealership to dealership and never finds success it is most likely them. If they’ve had...

I did not put an option for reps activity, because I believe most of the members here are true professionals and we understand how important it is to complete those activity goals for the week, month or quarter. You are correct, there are no short cuts, you need to work!! Originally Posted by dimaxusa: Wow. No poll answer regarding the rep’s activity…interesting. There may be some confusion here. I am giving the file out to "new" members that will register on the site. Existing members need to purchase a Premium Membership. I will send the file to those members that requested it here and to me via email. I will post a dropbox link some time later today, please make sure you check back later for the link. Art

Re: In Search of the Office Imaging Industry’s Top Sales People
I just do not understand why this is necessary. Unless of course you and Art are on some sort of a reward, working for or with the US Inland Revenue people ? We all know who we are, that are any good at selling !!! I do not see any real benefit other than those with Narcissistic tendencies.

Re: Ten Reasons Why I'm Still Enamored With the Copier Industry!
Let me add a few: * There are no Government regulations to restrict or impede my business. So many businesses are massively effected by governmental regulatory agencies like OSHA, EPA, FDA, etc. This isn't meant to be an indictment. Just saying that we don't find ourselves unemployed when a drug is taken off the market or a patent runs out. * A variation on the theme above is that because we don't sell to a single vertical market, there are always prospects. Realtors do well when the housing...

Re: Hit All Your Sales Goals in Just 5 Hours a Day
Well, after the read I kinda like it, especially the part about going home after 5 hours, but I guess the devil is in the details. Yes, you could make 20 calls per hour and do it for 5 hours, then go home, however you'll be sure to get the appointments and then we have to figure in the travel time...

Re: Sales, how is everyone doing?
Art, We had a nine month run where we MADE our sales numbers every month. Then we were slightly off in August (but better than last August). I think Sept will be back on track and we expect to end the year well. So 2013 has been significantly better than 2012, at least for us. Vince

Re: Sales, how is everyone doing?
I'm about 105% of a $900k YTD quota & should finish the year over 100% of plan. Not nearly good as last year, but still a good year.

Re: Sales, how is everyone doing?
For those of you who are KILLING IT out in the field, what percentage of your sales is from net new business and what percentage is from base?
Reply
Re: Sales, how is everyone doing?
I'm running at 91% of plan right now, we track net new business especially this year. I'm about 43% and the number #1 with our four branches.

Re: Sales, how is everyone doing?
YTD 70% of my sales have been Net New vs 30% Upgrade. Q4 will have a lot of Upgrade, so it will probably end up being 50/50 for the year.

Re: Sales, how is everyone doing?
50% of plan YTD. Not happy about it but I'm working towards a good Q3 ending and a strong Q4. Still have my eye on the prize of hitting 100% of quota. //

Re: The Death of Linkedin?
True story: I met a guy on the driving range.....an annoying sort of fellow. We chatted for a few minutes and I didn't think anything of it. Next day I get a request from him on LinkedIn. Not wanting to be rude I accepted. Within half an hour he called my office name dropping my name trying to get an appointment with the owner of my company to get a crack at our 401K business. With the owner of the company out of the office the call got put through to me.......talk about an awkward...

Re: The Death of Linkedin?
Cant blame the guy for trying. We all started with hitting the street at 8:30 to pound on doors and chase most anything that moved. The nature of Linked is a way to connect, but its tough when a request comes out of the blue.

Re: The Death of Linkedin?
LinkedIn is becoming the new Facebook. Useless posts by people and political crap all over it. When you do anything business related you are inundated with requests to connect followed 20 seconds later with some sales script about setting up a meeting. I still use it all the time but get annoyed by it daily.

Re: 3 Ways Getting Involved In Community Service Can Help Copier Sales Reps Enhance Their Sales Success
If you want to sell $500K per year, then join your local chamber of commerce, however if you really want to sell one million or more, the join those high profile charities in your geo area. Get involved, donate time and knowledge, within a year or less you'll be rubbing elbows with the most influential "C" level execs in your area. TY Larry, you took the words right outta my mouth on this one!

Re: One BIG Take Away from the Top 100 Summit
Art, Great article I always used the purpose question when hiring. Ask the candidate what their purpose is, what would drive their core being to do what every it takes as long as it's legal, moral, and ethical to succeed in the career of sales? When people have the conviction for their purpose they will have the strength needed when the world of circumstances attempts to stop their momentum.

Re: One BIG Take Away from the Top 100 Summit
This is a tough business and finding young blood who are willing to gut it out is HARD. I've been in this industry for 5 years now and every year the thought of quitting enters my mind. The reasoning to stick around has to be more than just about money. For me, lasting 10 years in copier sales is the equivalent to getting my "black belt" in "the art of selling." I already have the confidence to feel like I can do anything -- real estate, start my own business, etc... I've gone through the...

Re: The Quest for $200K Starts Tomorrow
Art, I loved this column, especially the lead- in history of your start as a technician. That was me in 1978-79. I worked for a Canon subsidiary in Union NJ as a tech. Just moved here from Ohio. My service manager told the owner after a year " he is a passable tech but he keeps losing his tools". It was a sign from God, I guess. Good luck on your quest.
