CANTON  Stark County commissioners voted 3-0 Wednesday to approve the Stark County Sheriff's Office purchasing a cloud-based records system from Tyler Technologies for the sheriff's office and jail.

The cost is $1.02 million for equipment, software and installation, plus at least $289,735 a year in maintenance but with no maintenance fee the first 18 months. After the fifth year, the cost of maintenance can increase up to 3% per year.

The estimated cost of having the system for over 10 years is about $3.52 million. Tyler had said the price quote was only good until Thursday.

Sheriff George Maier told the commissioners in a work session Dec. 14 that for each local law enforcement agency that chooses to also use the system, Tyler would discount the county 1% on the annual maintenance fee.

He said the system would automatically fill in several fields, saving deputies the time of repeatedly providing the same information for an arrestee in paperwork so they could spend more time on the road patrolling and responding to calls.

Maier touted all several benefits: Tyler currently is the vendor for the sheriff's computer-aided dispatch system allowing for easier syncing of information between the dispatch system and the records system; the sheriff's office could more quickly respond to public records requests; with less human data entry required, data in the system would be more accurate; and law enforcement agencies in the area would be able to more quickly share information on suspected criminal activity.

In other action, the board:

  • Approved the sheriff's office adding another printer at a cost of $127 a month for the Metro Narcotics Unit as part of a five-year agreement with Graphic Enterprises. The contract already includes the cost of leasing 10 Konica Minolta copiers and 12 Hewlett-Packard desktop color printers.
