Toshiba Tops Competitors in Point of Sale Test for Best-in-Class Performance and Value

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions was named the top performer in a study1 by Edison Group, a technology research firm, in a test that examined the impact the retail environment can have on point of sale (POS) durability and retail hardening. Durability has a direct effect on total cost of ownership (TCO) of POS due to the need for maintenance, repairs and potential replacement. The Edison Group test focused on impact of dust and lint collection in three POS systems from HP, NCR and Toshiba.

“Analysis of the data and direct observations suggest the Toshiba system will be far more durable than the HP and NCR systems, and should have a longer lifespan and lower TCO.”

Lint and dust are significant issues for retail environments across all segments, including specialty retail, general merchandise, and grocery/drug stores. To objectively assess how well POS systems tolerate dust and lint, a laboratory test was designed and executed under Edison Group’s control, to measure the impacts of lint and dust over a seven-year period in the Toshiba SurePOS 785, NCR 82xrt, and HP rp5800 units. These solutions all claim to be retail hardened.

The study measured CPU heat levels and dust build up to determine how environmental factors impact system performance and maintenance needs. After a testing period which recreated approximately two and a half years in a retail setting, the HP and NCR units had collected dramatic levels of dust and consistently reached or exceeded the maximum published CPU specified temperature limits. Edison concluded that these models could face durability problems relatively early in their life spans, reduced system performance and premature system failure.

The Toshiba SurePOS 785 was the clear top performer, exhibiting both the lowest amount of accumulated dust and consistent temperature within normal operating ranges. Because of its superior performance and durability, the Toshiba system can require less frequent maintenance and provides lowest total cost of ownership among the units tested.

"While we knew Toshiba was the leader in the POS solution market, researchers were surprised by just how much Toshiba outperformed the other units tested,” said Barry Cohen, Chief Technology Officer, Edison Group. “Analysis of the data and direct observations suggest the Toshiba system will be far more durable than the HP and NCR systems, and should have a longer lifespan and lower TCO.”

“We take great care in designing our systems to ensure maximum performance in all retail environments,” Gregg Margosian, Chief Technology Officer, Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions. “We’re proud to see that the results from the Edison Group study continue to prove that Toshiba is the most reliable choice for retailers.”
