New imageRUNNER Devices With Next-Generation Image Platform Technology Address Every Workflow Environment From Small Offices to Light Production

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 7, 2005-- Canon U.S.A., Inc., the nation's market share brand leader in black-and-white and color laser copier/printer solutions(1), today announced the availability of the imageRUNNER 2230/2830/3530 for small offices and the imageRUNNER 105+/9070/8070/85+ for light production, print-on-demand environments. Based on Canon's latest-generation Image Platform controller technology, the new multifunction office systems offer a host of advanced document management features ranging from increased job processing and enhanced security to new communication and integration capabilities.

"Canon is focused on the delivery of products that impact our customer's document work processes at every level and across all industries," said Sam Yoshida, director and general manager of Product Marketing for Canon U.S.A.'s Imaging Systems Group. "Whether it be advanced document production and information distribution at the light production level, or simply increasing basic copy/print and fax efficiencies in workgroup and SOHO environments, these new multifunction solutions give customers greater control over their business processes and allow them to work more effectively, efficiently, and securely."

"Since the introduction of the first imageRUNNER networked multifunction devices in 1999, Canon has seen unparalleled success in the U.S. digital multifunction market," said Jon Bees, editor-in-chief, Better Buys for Business, a leading publisher of buyer guides for document imaging equipment. "The introduction of these seven new imageRUNNER models spanning black-and-white mid-to-production level technologies will further strengthen its dominant U.S. position within the copier-based multifunction market."

Canon imageRUNNER 105+/9070/8070/85+

Unveiled at Canon's Digital Solutions Forum in October 2004, the new imageRUNNER 105+/9070/8070 and printer-only imageRUNNER 85+ multifunction devices offer advanced document management and communication features with the tightest possible integration and control across corporate networks of the largest size and scope. All four models are designed to support high-speed, high precision, multi-function processing of image data, making them ideal for use in the quick-print and copy sectors, government/public offices and large companies with dedicated internal reprographic facilities.

Featuring Canon's latest Image Platform architecture, each model supports increased job processing speeds, upgraded network connectivity support and true concurrent job processing across all functions - copying, printing, scanning, sending. The imageRUNNER 8070 is an 80-ppm MFP designed to drive exceptional multifunction performance in large departments, while the imageRUNNER 85+ provides similar functionality in a scanner-less configuration for print-only environments. The imageRUNNER 9070 and 105+, running at 90-ppm and 105-ppm respectively, are designed for central reproduction departments with increased output speeds and high duty cycles.

With the new imageRUNNER 105+/9070/8070/85+, customer will have a number of print controller options, including the new Canon imagePASS-M3 Print Controller, among others. Featuring its own hardware dedicated for printing applications, the imagePASS-M3 is designed to the handle long-run and high volume needs of customers printing true Adobe® PostScript files, complex graphics and variable data output. The imagePASS-M3 controller adds support for Hot Folders and IPDS Data Stream Printing Software Utilities for Host printing in IBM Mainframe and AS/400 environments.

Canon's imageRUNNER 105+/9070/8070/85+ devices additionally reflect the evolution of the MFP beyond mere input/output devices - into true network peripherals capable of customization to meet unique workflow processes. Each device is Internet-ready; representing an upgrade to previous imageRUNNER models and designed to permit tight integration with Web-based information systems as well as enhanced security/encryption capabilities.

The models incorporate Canon's proprietary Java-based Multifunctional Embedded Application Platform (MEAP(TM))(2) technology, permitting users to flexibly tailor their system functions to specific industry or business needs by installing dedicated MEAP applications. The platform allows users to add new functions, such as document-output tallying and regulating, as well as advanced network features. And, because MAEP applications are based on java standards, third-party developers can use the MEAP Software Development Kit (sold separately) to design customized applications to run embedded from within the imageRUNNER device for seamless, customized integration with core business applications.

Additional enhancements to the new imageRUNNER 105+/9070/8070/85+ include:

Usability improvements via a new "Express Copy" user interface menu, as well as accessibility enhancements for disabled individuals.
Improved Send features, including URL Send, PDF Encryption and searchable PDF modes.
New security features such as removable Hard Drive (HD) support, HD encryption and Encrypted Secure Print functionality.
Improved Device Management features including the ability to automatically deliver device settings to multiple units in a networked environment.
Innovative Web-access features which provide the ability to perform "pull/print" applications via a built-in web browser.

Each model allows users to leverage system capabilities directly from the desktop through intuitively designed drivers, and enable complete finishing and paper supply functions for maximum productivity.

Canon's imageRUNNER 2230/2830/3530 provide exceptional output quality for both text and images as well as offer a host of productivity-maximizing features. These systems capture images at true 600x600 dpi resolution - equivalent to 1200x600 dpi for copying and 2400x600 dpi for printing. Standard Automatic Duplexing provides two-sided printing to conserve time and expense, and Canon's RAPID Fusing System reduces energy consumption and warm-up times. All models ship with Ethernet network connectivity and 128MB RAM along with digital copying functionality.

When equipped with an optional printer kit, the imageRUNNER 2230/2830/3530 support the latest Canon Ultra Fast Rendering II (UFR II) technology for fast document processing and available PCL 5e/6(3) page description languages. Equipped with the optional Super G3 Fax Board(4), the imageRUNNER 2230/2830/3530 supports heavy-duty faxing and greater document distribution needs.

The imageRUNNER 2230/2830/3530 devices feature a compact design that fits perfectly in busy environments with limited space. With the optional Finisher-S1, the devices are capable of delivering stapling and optional hole punching, as well as an optional second tray within the original footprint for increased productivity without sacrificing valuable office space.
