Repeated tests by NTT Data to access vital information failed to breach security

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, Oct. 15, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Konica Minolta Business Solutions (Canada) Ltd. (Konica Minolta) today announced the results of an extensive security test conducted by NTT Data, an internationally respected IT services provider. The tests, which were conducted on Konica Minolta’s bizhub line of multifunction printers (MFPs) and were designed to simulate a series of repeated hacking attempts, found that Konica Minolta’s MFPs were not vulnerable to major security breaches as all attempted attacks were rebuffed by built-in security software.

Globally in 2017, more than 2.6 billion records were stolen, lost or exposed by hackers – this represented an increase of 88% from the year prior. The hacking of confidential information poses a major risk to businesses around the world, and there does not seem to be any indications these types of attacks will slow. As a proactive measure, and to ensure its line of industry-leading MFPs continue to meet the most rigorous security standards, Konica Minolta engaged NTT Data and their NTT Security division to carry out the simulated attacks.

Over the course of about 80 hours, multiple efforts were made to access the operating system of the MFPs by trained experts. The tests included attempts to access data stored on each MFP's built-in hard drive, attempts to infiltrate the wider network through each MFP's connection, as well as attempts to infiltrate via fax and USB ports. All attempts to extract data failed, with the MFPs maintaining the privacy and integrity of the stored information.

“Data security and privacy are major issues that should be on every business’ radar,” said Norm Bussolaro, Sr. Director of Marketing, Konica Minolta Business Solutions (Canada) Ltd. “We’re serious about ensuring the integrity of our clients’ data, and plan on conducting periodic security tests like these in the future to stay up to date on the latest threats. It’s very meaningful to have such a respected global security firm validate our MFPs’ security features, and we’ll continue to take proactive measures to keep our clients’ data secure.”

The case study on Konica Minolta’s MFP security test has since been published on NTT Data’s website and can be accessed here.
