Savin 4022 / Ricoh 2022

The back side leading edge has toner on it and fades out as you get to the trail edge. if you run multiple copies it is only on the first copy. I have noticed that if you look at the drum prior to making copies there is a coating of toner on the drum. It appears that the toner is getting on the transfer roller and then the back of the paper. I have been asked by several members of the Print 4 Pay Hotel if we might be able to put together a Training Seminar/Solutions Event. Scan Router V2 Lite with Aficio 2035

New copier Aficio 2035 was added to group of Aficio 1035 copiers with printer/scaner options. 1035 works with Scan Router, 2035 does'nt. When I try to "Add I/O device" I get "no answer from device". But ping command says link is OK. I cant write an IP-adress of Delivery server on 2035. Do 2035 find it automaticly? Thanks for help.

My scanning gripe with the 1515 .... the FAX 4410NF is basically the 1013/1515 machine without a flatbed ... correct? Why does Ricoh not put color scanning on the 1515MF? If they can do it on the 4410NF, Samsung can do it VERY inexpensively for the Ricoh AC104 and AC204 ... scan to email a PDF file, I don't know about everyone else, but when using this particular feature, I find the documents are often in color.

I've noticed the same problem and was told that the reason for it cuting of the end 8 inches is because Acrobat does not support printing PDFs larger than C-size unless you have the full version of Acrobat, ie not just the Acrobat Reader, Atleast for the newer verions of reader. Anyone know if there is truth to this?

It’s not an Acrobat reader issue. I printed D size PDF from reader after installing the 300 DPI WinPrint driver.

Ted: I ran into the same thing. I ended up having to go to a pc that doesn't have sp2, but I know this isn't the solution. I think Ricoh is going to have to update the software.

YES- hold down the “Ctrl” key and single click the files you want to print. All the files will be highlighted. Select print and presto. Note: you cannot change the order in which they print. If page page3 is at the top line in the print queue and page 1, then 4, then 2. It will print in that order.

Stories like this burn my britches too. I think of all the times our tech support has stepped to the plate when I, wearing my sales hat, painted myself into a tech corner. The contribution value of competent and reliable tech support can not be over-emphasized and never taken for granted. Too many sales reps rely on tech support to close a deal for them, and simply walk away. Not only is it unethical, it is just plain dumb to alienate technical support. One I know of is to add Doc Mall, then scan2docmall, and then email to the mac. I am not familiar with the Savin model number, if this is the 2035esp, then use scan2email and send to the mac users email address. I also believe there is another way that Jay mentioned in one of the threads I have found. check it out when you get a chance. Art this should help

NO - You cannot merge the jobs into "sets" that can be sorted. If you hold CTRL and click on multiple documents, they will all print, but they will not come out sorted. If I asked for 3 copies, I'd get 3 copies of the first page, 3 copies of the second page, etc., etc. You can create a set to be collated, but the way to do this is to plot the files to disk, then create a job in Plotbase and add all the plots you need in this set to the job. Then you can select number of copies, select "collated

Have used them once. My customer has installed the software and copy counters. They have not complained about the software, as a matter of fact the first call I got was yesterday when copy controller went down. My customer called Equitrac and told them that they had to ship the controller out and then wait for it to be repaired, replaced and then shipped back to the customer. Customer was annoyed that it may take one - 2 weeks to have the controller operational. Plus they stated that the

Just an FYI that I stumbled upon while creating a job in Plotclient WIN. When you hilight a group of prints to add to the job, they DO NOT drop into the job in the same order. If you are collating and need them in the exact order, you need to drop one file at a time into the job to insure correct order. If anyone has found that this is not true, please let me know. Thanks. thanx for the great info! i was at an account today that needed to "reprint" exiting .plt files. I tried to add them into plotclient, however I was given an error message. quote: Unknown or not licensed file type)file C:\program Files RW-240-240 Plotbase\ss\1041\04-075A-100-plans-A-101.plt.1056.000000 whew! I then found by mistake that I could add these files to Scan Tools and was able to print them in a collated set! Can anyone elaborate as to why this happened? Thanx

The really funny thing is that I spoke to my Savin dealer rep on the same day you posted this info and he told me that there was absolutely NO information available about the new products and none would be released until the launch of the 51 ppm system in November. Looked on Ricoh 2018 rear cover (main ser #) It says 4018/DSm618/LD118/Aficio2018 all in a row, then way over to right of label says Ricoh Corp in small print. I'm pretty sure that all newer equip is labeled same way older equip used to say Savin/Gest or Ricoh separately

FILE SIZES

Hopefully somebody out there can help. I', working with an architecture firm that is currently using a TOSHIBA E-Studio 210 Color w/ fiery, their average file size is about 90 Megs. I have been trying to stear clear of the TOSHIBA / RICOH but scanning is a necssity so it knocks the 213 out. would any one venture with a 2238 in this type of file size? thanks for the help

1045 jams in morning

I have 1045/print/fax/paper pedestal, no finisher. Volume is 25K per month. The machine runs great, EXCEPT, every two or three days or so it jams first thing in the morning, at the fuser exit sensor. Page is halfway out of exit area of internal tray. Clear the jam, and it jams again 4 or 5 times, then runs flawlessly the rest of the day, maybe up to three days. THANKS PEOPLE!!!

I had some doubts initially on this product. Our company also owns copy centers which produce about 3 million impressions per month. We installed the 3131 their before pushing it into sales. it has performed really well. The only complaint that I have heard is the fiery is difficult to navigate with multiple users. My customer prints to their Savin 4018d from Wordperfect 10. For some reason, they cannot print from the bypass, it pulls from the default drawer eventhough the print driver and page setup are correct. I've tried RPCS and PCL6 drivers. Is this a limitation with Wordperfect? Is there a solution?

Printing PDF's from Acrobat Reader

I have a customer who is scanning to PDF and when they open the document in Acrobat reader and attempt to print, all that comes out is a blank page. I had it working yesterday by unchecking the "print as image" box in the application print, but this morning they tried to print using 5.0, just a blank page. You can see the drawing in reader and in the print preview. I had it working yesterday! This issue is driving me nuts! They also updated their reader to 6.0 this morning and now the pages are

AP4510 prints 10 jobs only

I am having some trouble with printing to the AP4510, well it doen print. The problem is when I send multiple jobs, I can send ten jobs through fine, but once I send 20 or more the printer prints ten of the jobs then goes into ready mode and waits for about ten min and then prints another ten jobs, The printer is running on Win NT Server, My actual question is, Is it a printer setting that is stopping the print jobs or might it be a restriction on the servers side? It might be a printer setting. Running many sets can make the fuser hotter which affects copy quality.

When printing the counter per user code, there are columns showing Full Colour, Black & White, etc... Under these columns there is A3/DLT and Others. What do these mean? I believe that A3 is letter size and DLT means double letter (duplex or 11" x 17"). Can anyone confirm or correct me on this?

When I started in this business, I sold Sharp Analog. One of the first machines I learned on and sold was the Sharp 2060 (60cpm). It was one of the worst machines Sharp ever made. they even had a 2075 (75cpm). Now the rumor mill says that the 1060 is being replaced by the 2060 very soon. We used to use a media called "Fabrika" Tee-shirt Transfer material, when we were carrying the Toshiba Chromotouch copier. However, it was a wax transfer machine, didnt use a fuser. And a fuser is the biggest obstacle in this application. I mean these things rip up bad when using anything that turns sticky.

Yes, the hard drive is installed, but I was told that you can only send lock print jobs and sample print jobs to the printer. Another thing, I cant send the jobs as locked prints because there are about 6000 jobs to print each job is 2 to 3 pages long, and as I understand it if you send the jobs as a locked print job you have to stand by the printer and release each one, one by one. Load smartnet admin, and see if everyone has rights to print. If so, Print the User tool settings and check the defaults. It is a user tool setting problem.

If you are sending a print job through LPR, Windows NT will only allow 10 jobs in the queue at one time. There is a fix for this detailed in the Microsoft Knowledgebase: http://support.microsoft.com/d...scid=kb;EN-US;179156

Setting this machine up in the shop today. All went OK after I dicovered a reversed connector on the control panel. I got it that the time zone here is -5 hrs from GMT but the daylight saving time setting look like they want me to input the start and end days in hex. The defaults are: Copier SP5-307-003 Start "41000010h" -005 End "10560000h" In the first place, dont we all start DST on the same day? And in the second place 41000010 hex = 1090519056./ What the heck is that?

Jay: Thank you for your information. It seems it would have been better (on many fronts)for Ricoh to have simply modified an SR840/841 to accept interchangeable punch dies. Their 2/3-hole punch is the best in the business. Even if they improve the reliability of the Streampunch, due to it's complicated paper path, it will never be as good as it could have been...Over-engineered!

Sorry - I haven't check in in awhile. We had installed beta firmware that allowed simultaneous usage of the interposer and the streampunch, but removed it because we thought it was causing other problems. We now think those problems are caused by another issue, known to GBC and Ricoh but no release date offered for the fix. We may re-install the firmware to further test its performance if we get the other issue resolved. Ron

6.0 shoulnt be the problem but it sure is bulky, I uninstalled it! But a blank sheet is usually a memory problem, which, I know, you tried "print as image" and that didnt work, if the standard tcp/ip is in use, consider a print server with lotsa memory. PDFs are famous for "missing"images.

If I remember correctly, the 2035e offers scan to folder w/o Scan Router when upgraded with printing and scanning. This is more important with the 4035esp (scanning and printing included). This is was one of the first 40 series generation to come out and SMB scanning wasn't available at the time. Most new units are e's.

Savin 4018 / Aficio 2018

We now have 2 of these that have washed out / very light copies afte about 1000 copies. First time we changed the developer to make sure that the proper dev was installed at set up. Toner motor works. can force feed toner a bring copy quality back but it does not hold. We resolved the first one by replacing the ID and TD seonsors. Is any body else having this problem?

1515 won't print fax on legal size.

Any one had a problem with the 1515 receiving faxes on Legal size paper? I've got several 1515's just delivered to a bank that is going to return them if we can't resolve this. Tech support has been notified and they do not have an answer as of yet.

Connecting scanrouter admin on xp service pack 2

I set-up scanrouter for scanning on a Savin 4018d(B121/122/123). Since then they called and said that scanning stopped working. I looked on the computer and it shows that they upgraded to service pack 2. I called ricoh's technical support and he didnt know where to change the ports at and had to ask someone else. Smart Net Monitor for Admin

I've sold a Savin C3424 and started networking it for a law firm. They want to bill clients for the copys they make on their behalf. Smart Net Monitor for Admin works on at least 2 of their computers, but not on the key operators. I believe this may have to do with the Windows Service Pack 2 upgrade. It seems like MS has implemented some new firewalls. Does anyone know if there is a solution to this problem? I can ping the machine and I can use Web Image Monitor, but cannot use SmartNet. Thanks

reducing Sub scan

I have a Ricoh AF2018D when i print from a Program (Drawing Program) it reduces the sub scan line by about 0.5mm per 100mm, the line must be 100mm but when we measured it after been printed it is only 99.5mm. The paper isn't shriniking it's the the line been printed isn't what it's surposed to be

Incorrect. MICR toner can be used in dual component machines, like the Hitachi DDP90. Don't forget that copy process to a point forces/ pushes toner from the DV roller to the drum. And we've all seen machine faults where the DV has been pulled from the DV unit. However MICR is specialist and not currently supported by Ricoh.

Thank you for your response Star1. I oppologize, my original message is a little unclear. They did purchase the optional legal trays with the 1515's. That's the problem. It will copy onto to legal, but legal faxes sent in will not print out from the legal tray.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the AP4510 a dual componant system? (toner and Developer) If so, it is my understanding that micr is out of the question. Only printers that can use micr toner are mono-componant. The mag roller in the dev. unit makes it impossible to use magnetic toner. If any one has info to the contrary please reply.

MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. I never heard of a dual componant system with micr before. I am unfamiliar with the Hitachi DDP90. Is it a common machine? Are the drum and devs. seperate units. All the ricohs I have using MICR are cartriage machines. Ie ap1600 2600, Af 180 ect.

Germany (RATIO) goofed and left PDF enabled on first few 240 controllers. They did figure it out - less orders for postscript option! and have "fixed". In the future,if you want to print PDF files you must have Postscript option. If you want to scan to PDF, you must have Postscript AND Scan Option.

product support guide says up to 1 mm, but i have feed up to 3 mm with no problems. Ricoh tech will only support up to 1 mm though.... See page 9

i've had one with same problem also. I told the customer to copy 100 copies with not much text on. That worked out for us. Seemed to me that the customer used the copier only to take 1-5 sets of coipes for a while, that made the machine not correct and adjust the toner amount. Dunno if im correct on this, but atleast it worked.

Select collate from printer properties, not in application and make sure the box in the application is UNCHECKED.

It appears that the AC204 is equivalent to the Samsung SCX-5315F (wholesale $850 to $900) - although the Ricoh model claims to be 16 ppm and the Samsung model 15 ppm.

I think you're right Jomamma. This may be where we have to draw the line and say, "hey, you have to contact your IT person. It works fine on all of the other PC's." But, I think this may be an ongoing thing. MS updates their OS and Ricoh has to create a firmware update and the cycle repeats. A good reason for customers to purchase network support agreements from copier companies. But, Ricoh has to get on the ball. If we can have a solution to offer, it's an easy sell.

Just curious, we discussed a couple of weeks ago how we were dealing with charges for being called back to reconnect or help customers with connected system after the intitial set-up. How are your dealerships handling the intitial set-up? Do you charge a flat fee, a graduated fee based on # of workstations? Do you charge to put faxes and printer drivers online?

1) The best way from a company point of view is to bill by the hour. If you’re just installing a print or fax driver on one or two PC’s, this should not take long. However when you get into scanning to folder or email, you need settings that some customer have know idea what you’re talking about. This can take time, calling an ISP or outside IT person, passwords… 2) As art said, we sale blocks of time to the customer included in the sale. Let them know up front you have x amount of time for

I haven't done a wireless setup, but for network, it was plug and play. I did have a problem the last time when I could not access the printer from the control panel. It showed up on the network and could print, but the 1515mf would not see it. Come to find out, the firmware card was not properly seated. It evidently had come loose during shipping.

Jim - I only get this report when I scream loud enough to our corporate office about backorders (like I've been screaming about the 240W). I will make available every time I see one. I think...our purchasing agent gets this info from our East Region Allocations people at Ricoh - I would think they would provide this info to anybody on an allocations list for backorders?

Art, you gave alot of good advice and I hope the younger people in this business will listen. I to have been in this business for 24 years and in sales for 32 years. I also cover a rural area in western NY. And yes, I can't tell you how many accounts I first broke into with a 12CPM or 15CPM that latter let to multi-machine placements. To this day I will still take a short deal to open a new account hope in to let to other sales. IF I had one word of advice it's to follow-up on all your sales

Both of them use a serial cable to connect from the PC to the copier mode. Therefore, the modem is local to the PC and not a node on the NW. As far as I know a local modem cannot be shared. Newer machines can intergrate the modem into their system which in on the network. Ex. The AF220 required a cable for the modem and a cable for the printer and a cable for the scanner. 2 network drops. Bottom line. Cant do it.

boy that's the truth. too often salespersons get a comfort level with only one person in an account that eventually ends up biting them on the backside. nurturing contact at all levels in an account is oh so vital. from end users to department heads to purchasing to c-levels. the more bases you cover the more solid the relationship.

Regarding bandit's last post, I will try that tomorrow on a newly installed system. We have one problem and that is that when we scan a PDF at 150dpi we do not see it in the image window or in Acrobat, but when we scan at 400dpi, we can see it and open it up in Acrobat reader. But when we open either one on a clients computer in Acrobat reader and try to send it to print, a blank page comes out of the 240. Maybe I just had a bad day, but what am I doing wrong?

I agree on the quality. I showed sample prints of a document to my boss (that thinks digital duplicators are just no good)leading him to believe we were not talking about the quality of the image, but the information on the page. At the end of the conversation I asked what he thought of the quality and he was sure it came off a copier. Now he wants to know if it has good tight registration and how it does 4 pass color reproduction. Any help appreciated.

Guys, I took a chance and placed a 4500 in a print shop. He is enthralled with the copy/print technology. Ink yields compared to the JP3000 have been outrageous. He's averaging 11K per cartridge on long runs. He has not complained about registration, and he is doing single color NCR. As far as registration for 4 color work, the jury is still out. The JP4500 uses does the new press roiller design that is in the JP5500 and the JP8500. As far as working with the Seri, they should find a way to

Is that to PRINT from or copy from. If it is only to Print from, that may be a function of the server and you might have a solution as simple as shutting down the unit and the PC then bringing the 240 back up THEN the PC. I had a similar problem on a 470W and that solved the issue for me. Just a thought. Graham

It's an okay fax but two problems are - toner yield - samsung says 3k but it doesn't get anywhere near that (ricoh says 4500 - I wonder about that) Also samsung 560 dual access is not as good as we are used to. After a color page is done, all subsequent black pages are processed black created from print from all four color drums and development units. Have a prospect that wants all faxes that they send and recieve also stored digitally. So far this is the best solution I have come up with. RX - print and forward to email address then have outlook rules move messages to a folder named incoming faxes. TX - after sending fax, put back in adf and scan to a destination marked outgoing faxes. It would be nice to automate storing of TX faxes instead of having to scan twice, any ideas?

Depends what machine and how much money you want to spend. You could use a Ricoh box with an SR90 booklet maker. This will do exactly as you want. Otherwise you're stuck. As well as being a firmware limitation you'll also find you need to staple as the sheets would move when being folded. (Cheap mechanics in a finishre!!)

It must be the first number that is sent to the customer. I try to make it a point to contact the customer at least 6 months prior to the lease expiration and upgrade them before the lease expires. I'll be honest, I have not had too many leases that have gone to term. Not to say I haven't made that many sales, but that the majority of the leases do not get the purchase option exercised. I'll put a feeler out tomorrow and see if I can get an answer on if they play favorites for different

As a salesmen who once sold micro-film equipment, the problem still remains not with the customer wanting to use electronic storage but with the court of law. The courts still require that a sign document can not be alter. Will all we know if you scan a doc in memory, even in PDF format there is software out there that you can edit doc's. I have machines in the county sheriffs dept, which also have a crime scene division and to this day they cannot use digital camera's. They still use film

colour drums and devs don't stop they are still counted in the developement counters if a black print is made. Confused??!! So a run of 2 black prints, 2 colour prints and 2 black prints would count 6 blk devs and 12 colour devs (the first two black prints are made at full speed, then the machine slows and the transfer belt goes up for the two colour prints, all others in the run are with transfer belt up). If the machine were set to count prints this would be 4 blk and 2 col.

This is my first experience with bluetooth and I can't find much documentation on it from Ricoh. G'Day all. You will get your yield based on the figures given by Ricoh. However it is important to understand the issues with coverage. Also bear in mind that coverage to useage are not proportional. A square block of colour on a page 100x100=1000, if you double the size of the square you quadruple the coverage 200x200=4000. Also dependant upon what you're printing will make a difference. 5% of text and 5% of graphics are different due to image processing and laying of toner and charge.

From what I know bluetooth is a wireless connection. The customer would need some type of Bluetooth device in the PC. If they are running XP, the user would have to install the software for Bluetooth and then let XP find the device. I do not know if there is software from Ricoh for our Bluetooth card. Making it print would be just like any other, select print, and go. Can anyone else clarify and add? Thanx

I have been putting the new 3131 through it's paces and have shown to several customers. Overall print quality is excellent - different from 6513 but obviously true 8 bit color. Should be a good fit to compete with Canon 1180 - ie. good print quality, fiery driven, low cpp and cheap. The juries still out on the durability and reliability with thick stocks, but I'm glad to finally have a higher speed "graphics" machine to offer.

Good Tip for You All

When challanging another digital competitor, I will go the that manufacturers web site and downlaod the print driver and other relevant software. From there I can evaluate the features of the driver and the click throughs. I have found clicks throughs to be very important to the end users, they want the least amount of clicks as possible. Art

Format (WF) via eCabinet. The printer driver needs to be 100% PCL compatible and the WinPrint driver needs to be printed to directly. What you might be able to do is setup a separate printer in Autocad printing that points to a paperless printer on the eCabinet. The user would have to process a separate print job when they wanted to send a job to the eCabinet. The jobs would be saved as PDFs on the eCabinet. You also should be able to take scanned Tiff files and pass them to the eCabinet

Yes, the 2238 comes with bypass standard, however it is not an option for doing covers, therefore the paper weight is limited. Great info on the Canon. I don't think my prospects are seriously considering Canon because I contacted them before they were in the market and other vendors are running a "me too" game. Plus I'm offering GEM pricing in order to place some needed color units in my territory.

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Last Week of July 2004)

Egads, it's Friday night almost 10PM and I'm still working.  My day started off at 5AM.  I arrived at the office about 6:30AM. Had to quotes to prepare before I had two appointments that were an hour away.  Closed two of the appointments and then traveled back to office to prepare some material for another appointment around 2PM.  Second appointment went okay and sparked some interest in the new PRO5160.  Did a few cold calls, nothing to speak of. On my way home, I received an email from a net new stating they wanted to move forward with an order.  Not bad three days into the new month and 3 orders. Gotta keep going!

I have a prospect who is looking to implement a new color system with scanning and I'm proposing the Savin C3828 (ricoh 2238 series). This is a law firm and they are interested in scanning mostly for manipulation. Our company is weak in this area, but I think the competition is weaker. We just saw this the other day on a Savin 4018d (same as Ricoh 2018). Lines almost like a notebook sheet but vertical. Seemed to only come from internal print outs from fax (confirmations, etc...) Looks like a firmware upgrade or something like that waiting to happen. Hope we don't have to wait too long, we are selling these like hotcakes and they are on back order as is.

just not the market for most professional salespeople. The most disappointing aspects are the document feeder and the virtually non-existent dual/multi-access. It is okay as a printer with occassional convenience copying of single originals. Beware of this one, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Look for new Ricoh faxes that are also Samsung OEM. We have had some success with these, yet found Ricoh to be making a big profit on them. We cannot justify paying twice as much for the

GOBY IS SINKING MY SHIP AND FAST!!!!! Question for the experts

Has anyone worked with GOBY? We have been attempting to use it on a pilot with a large organization. They have 5 locations where I am at and have been faxing 70 + page documents several times a day to these various locations. We have an RMAP 2015 with the same problem. Prints digital junk in RX as well as on internal fax reports. Copier and printer end both work fine. Machine was installed for only about 90 days when problem surfaced. (At least it is still under warranty.) Waited for backordered FCU for 3 weeks. Meanwhile Ricoh had changed the part # (also on backorder with no e.t.a.). Finally called RMAP about this issue, due to it being a Major Account. They could not help me. No FCUs to be found anywhere. Has anyone tried to do covers on this machine? Typically, when we want to do covers we want to use heavier stock. Therefore, we'd use the bypass. On the new color system, bypass is not an option. Which limits the weight to 28lb bond. I know that Canon probably has it all over us on this feature (Canon reps?). Can anyone tell me if there is a solution or if you have to add the interposer?

Fuser problems on DSc338/C3828/1238

here's the scoop. we have the Gestetner version in a print for pay environment. they are running thick paper stock through the bypass tray and all the settings are right for thick paper. in the last 6 weeks we have had to replace 3 fuser units because the center pawl has dug into the upper fuser belt. they are right at specs for the thickness of the stock they are using and are running about 15,000 color prints per month. any ideas?

Carrier sheets are like huge file folders made out of a thin but durable plastic. The drawing is inserted into the carrier sheet up to the point where the fold is. They come in various widths for various drawing sizes. Tracing paper is a good application for using them. Ricoh used to carry them but I do not think they do anymore. Here is Detroit, we used to buy them from a 3rd party company but the supplier we used no longer carries them. So, they can be handy but I do not know where to

yes thats what I meant....regardless...the numbers are based on 5% for each color so when the customers does full bleed we are screwed. Also change your meter to copy rather than development...That could help. Well Canon & Monica must be in the same boat too!

it is my understanding that the finisher used by both RFG and Canon is manufactured by a third party source. Also, if what I was told is correct the RFG finisher offers hole punch while the Canon does not.

i am not aware of a color product where there is no bypass option available. as for canon i have a customer with the canon and the are quite a few issues with the box i would worry about those. i do believe you can get a bypass option for your 2238. although the max weight there is 43lb. bond.

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Third Week of July 2004)

Thursday had me in the field with 2 appointments and ten or so planned stop ins and cold calls. I also mentioned that I would be on the lookout for other opportunities for prospects.  Many times reps will ask, "where are the prospects?". Ah, grasshopper the prospects are all around you. All you have to do is use your eyes.  Many of you know that I sell my fair share of wide format, and with wide format prospecting all you have to do is use your eyes for prospects.  When you're out driving, sitting at a traffic light, or maybe in a hitting the head there are prospect (potential client) galore!  All commercial trucks need to be lettered with the company name. Over the years Ive written down those names and or taken pictures of the truck. Once I'm back in the office I make the call, some work out some don't. However it's a great way to get a conversation going when you mention you saw one of their trucks.  Try it, because you never know what tomorrow will bring!

Why is it that my clients always have the weirdest issues...here goes: My client wants to track prints on their new Savin 2560 (1060) and CLP28 (CL7000). No problem. I gave each driver a user code and in system settings/user code management told the 2560 to require user codes for the print drivers. Here's the problem; there are two Macs on the network and the Mac drivers don't have any place to add a user code, therefore the Macs now can't print to the 2560 that is asking for a user code

Aficio cl1000n

I just got done installing the rpcs driver for the new Ricoh Aficio CL1000N. Also know as Savin 831CLP. I wanted to print envelopes from this printer. I looked in the manual and it told me to change the settings to thick paper on both the printing properties and the usertools of the printer. I did this but when i did this it printed on the paper with no problem but it is printing it in the wrong direction. I also tried rotating it and it was still wrong.

I have done quite a bit of research on this but need to get to home base in order to close (4) 240W's. Prospect has seen a KIP demo where they can send a "text" based stamp file such as "Printed by Joe Blow" and follow up with the file to be printed. They can do this from Unix and end up with a watermark on their drawing. Within Plotbase, we can configure the CFG & SSL folders to include stamps (including macros)but I do not believe that a job coming from Unix will have header information

We are 22 years dedicated Ricoh except for taking on Riso 10 years ago when we couldn't get any support from Ricoh on Digital Duplicators. Longview is a town of 75,000 but within a 30 miles we have three Savin Dealers, a Lanier, two IKON offices and a Gestetner Dealer. Glad the end result is a happy customer. The firewall is only one of many varibles that you may run into. It is why it is so important that the customer have there own IT person during the install. After the salesman has signed the deal it is up to you to make the system perform as expected. If the customer is poor or "it is my mom's network" kind of deal you will have to deal with whatever comes up. And altho you may be able to make it work, you may cause other problems on their nw. In a letter to a Senior VP at Konica, my boss wrote that selling the Konica 8050 to IKON, and allowing them to re-label, was the biggest sellout in the history of the copier industry. I guess that Konica isn't the only "sellout" when it comes to their products. I hope for all our sake that the "X" dealer doesn't get involved because it's pretty easy to sell against them in the WF arena right now. Good luck

I'm in sales, heres what is acceptable to me. The customer not calling me to tell me about a paper misfeeds. Once I get the call I believe the problem is past the "once every so often" jam. Digital copiers should rarely misfeed when using a dood quality of paper. Analog, seemed to have more misfeeds in the accessories (thank goodness thoase days are over!). If you want more I believe Ricoh publishes a MTBF rate for the new digital systems. Art

Here's something no one talks much about. What is considered an acceptable jam frequency on our digital products, as a percentage of the copy volume. I have a general rule of thumb that I go by, but I'd like to hear your opinion. Of course, I have a harder time on some models meeting my target, some models make it easily. I had access to the 4 cd's but not the workbook and I can tell you that you will want a workbook I got from QuickCert.com that made the difference for me. It is a challangeing course but one I am certain we can all benefit from taking. This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Second Week of July 2004)

Fifteen years ago, hmmm, I was 47 years old and was with Century for 5 years. That time was something special since it was what I call the digital age of copiers. There were still analog copiers to be upgraded and the we attacked new business was to educate the client on how much that fax and printer cost per page was.  Faxing was still big and most fax machines had a cost of 3 cents per page or higher.  For companies that were receiving a couple of thousand pages a month the cost justification was easy. How I loved those days!

Fast forward and we can still sell ROI, fax usage is down, however color volume is up and there are more color A4 printers out there that are still ripe for replacing.  You just need to find them!

Why is it that my clients always have the weirdest issues...here goes: My client wants to track prints on their new Savin 2560 (1060) and CLP28 (CL7000). No problem. I gave each driver a user code and in system settings/user code management told the 2560 to require user codes for the print drivers. Here's the problem; there are two Macs on the network and the Mac drivers don't have any place to add a user code, therefore the Macs now can't print to the 2560 that is asking for a user code

Aficio cl1000n

I just got done installing the rpcs driver for the new Ricoh Aficio CL1000N. Also know as Savin 831CLP. I wanted to print envelopes from this printer. I looked in the manual and it told me to change the settings to thick paper on both the printing properties and the usertools of the printer. I did this but when i did this it printed on the paper with no problem but it is printing it in the wrong direction. I also tried rotating it and it was still wrong.

Unix Printing / Macros

I have done quite a bit of research on this but need to get to home base in order to close (4) 240W's. Prospect has seen a KIP demo where they can send a "text" based stamp file such as "Printed by Joe Blow" and follow up with the file to be printed. They can do this from Unix and end up with a watermark on their drawing. Within Plotbase, we can configure the CFG & SSL folders to include stamps (including macros)but I do not believe that a job coming from Unix will have header information

We are 22 years dedicated Ricoh except for taking on Riso 10 years ago when we couldn't get any support from Ricoh on Digital Duplicators. Longview is a town of 75,000 but within a 30 miles we have three Savin Dealers, a Lanier, two IKON offices and a Gestetner Dealer. Glad the end result is a happy customer. The firewall is only one of many varibles that you may run into. It is why it is so important that the customer have there own IT person during the install. After the salesman has signed the deal it is up to you to make the system perform as expected. If the customer is poor or "it is my mom's network" kind of deal you will have to deal with whatever comes up. And altho you may be able to make it work, you may cause other problems on their nw. We carry Sharp as well as Savin. I've never heard of a AR505. Our current Sharp Offering is the AR-M550, 620, 700. All from the same platform. The 550 outputs @ 55ppm, scans @ 65opm, and duplexes @ 76ppm. This is due to it's single pass doc feeder. Hope this helps.

We e-mailed the ricoh corporation about this and they said that it was a known problem and that they were working on it. They said that if you scan it in as a pdf there is an option when you select print from the menu that says shrink files to fit paper. If you uncheck this it makes it a little bit better but it still reduces the image. It also still does it as tiff's and e-mail's. Another problem is that you can still see the line down the side when you view the image and dont print it

Not much you can do, the MAC driver doesn’t have a user code option. You would need OEM print software, or the Ricoh print cabinet.

Art - I feel your pain! In a letter to a Senior VP at Konica, my boss wrote that selling the Konica 8050 to IKON, and allowing them to re-label, was the biggest sellout in the history of the copier industry. I guess that Konica isn't the only "sellout" when it comes to their products. I hope for all our sake that the "X" dealer doesn't get involved because it's pretty easy to sell against them in the WF arena right now. Good luck

I'm in sales, heres what is acceptable to me. The customer not calling me to tell me about a paper misfeeds. Once I get the call I believe the problem is past the "once every so often" jam. Digital copiers should rarely misfeed when using a dood quality of paper. Analog, seemed to have more misfeeds in the accessories (thank goodness thoase days are over!). If you want more I believe Ricoh publishes a MTBF rate for the new digital systems. Art

I have comprised to the best of my ability an excel format with formulas, all you have to do is input the appropriate square footage the customer is using. Jam Frequency

Here's something no one talks much about. What is considered an acceptable jam frequency on our digital products, as a percentage of the copy volume. I have a general rule of thumb that I go by, but I'd like to hear your opinion. Of course, I have a harder time on some models meeting my target, some models make it easily. ICM is Image Color Matching. It is an attempt to make the color on your monitor = the color output of the printer. It is usually not installed automatically with the driver but must be installed separtatly. "Change Data Processing" ? The words seem to say it all but that is too simple. Ricoh University has a cbt package with 4 cd's and a workbook. I had access to the 4 cd's but not the workbook and I can tell you that you will want a workbook I got from QuickCert.com that made the difference for me. It is a challangeing course but one I am certain we can all benefit from taking. Customer has 4 year old Minolta Di520 running 360k per year. Would I be okay replacing with 45cpm ricoh or do I need to move up to 60cpm. I am a Konica & Ricoh dealer. The two units do not compare at all!! The MSRP is a little higher on the bizhub C350, but the quality and reliability is VERY superior to the 1224. I have sold (2) C350's in my market directly from an in-house demo. The C350's MSRP is below the new 2232/2238 from Ricoh and is still better in quality (in my opinion). The only negative is the C350 does not have a fax option available. Hopefully your Konica/Minolta competition isn't up to speed and doesn't sell it

Di520 is digital (I believe it was Minolta's first 50CPM/ppm digital). Most initial digital offerings from any of the manyufacturers that had a print controller were very slow and never came close to the advertised print speed! reps were reluctant or did not know enought to add the hard drive or increase the memory. There is a good chance that the Minolta prints very slow. If that is the case you will have a very strong position when you explain the state of the art technology, the standard HDD

the 520 may have been the first of Minolta's digital systems but it was a workhorse. Th finishing unit woule do folding. I'd go with the 60...the capabilities of the doc server as well as printing speed, duplexing speed, the scanning all are value added vs. the 520

One of the hardest transitions that most companies face is that one which takes us from "boxes" to solutions sales. How easy it is at the end of a slow month to revert back to the slam mentality. and Scott, you are right. We simply have to keep our focus on talking points that lead the client toward a solution to producing and managing of their document.

I for one, when cold calling am never going to drop off a hardware brochure. Unless it is for a duplicator or wide format. I will drop off an document solution brochure, whether from Ricoh, Virtual, Doculex or Sentry. I believe I can cover all of the bases with these products. I have to focus on becoming an expert on managing the flow of paper. I do not need to concentrate on as much speeds and feeds.

We had a problem yesterday when we scanned and image to plotbase. We set the scan DPI higher than 200 dpi, we then scanned and saved as a pdf file. We then were able to view the file in Adobe. However when we printed all we got was a blank page. We have to back down the scan dpi to 200 and all worked fine. We have submitted an alert and we are waiting for a response.

The same problem happened with plotbase,RW470. A winprint 300 DPI print driver solved the problem there with Adobe. I tried using the driver for the RW240, but didn’t work.

I found out the answer after much searching. The Z-fold option is an accessory that is between 4 and 6 inches wide that fits between the print engine and the SR841. The SR90 is still able to be attached to the SR841. You can run Z-fold or booklet jobs through this set up. Of course, you can not do both in one print job. They would have to be separated. The Canon units I have seen all do TWAIN interface scanning. This means that you go to the copier, put the documents in the adf, go back to your pc and open the TWAIN interface and click on the scan button. Keep in mind this means no one can use the copier while you have your documents in the adf. As you know we can scan to the desktop, to a file folder on the network or an ftp folder. The other thing you need to know is where is this scan to be stored and why. How often will it need to be

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (First Week of June 2004)

It was 15 years ago this week when Ricoh launched the MP 240W digital wide format printer/copier/scanner. It was a fantastic time for me in sales.  I guess I was at the right spot at the right time. Similar to when Minolta launched the Minolta 450Z copy machine back in 1984.

Ricoh broke the bank with the MP 240W in 2004.  There was no other digital wide format like it that could print/scan and copy for the price.  Many Architects, Engineers and Construction companies were farming out prints and scans to repro shops, and Staples for .50 -1.00 per square foot. It didn't take that many prints to cost justify the 240W at MSRP. Selling at MSRP would net you about $8-$9K in GP and the commissions were 50% of the GP. It was not uncommon to take home $12-$16K per month. 

Yup, we had that market controlled for about two years before Xerox launched their first digital wide format.  Believe it or not we even delivered the 240Ws for on-site demonstrations. We sold everyone we demo'd!

There were some growing pains with understanding the AEC market, but Ricoh had some excellent DSM's, and product trainers that gave us the basics.  We pounded them out left and right  and all were single placements, all had high GP and we gained mega new accounts.  Gaining those new accounts also gave us opportunities to place digital copiers.

After 15 years, we still have a few in the field.  Hard to believe right?  Like I said Ricoh hit a home run with the print engine, and the compact size of the device.

Oh yeah, as for the SADF mode, it is one of the few Ricoh/Savin products that has this on install. I believe that there is like a 30 sec. window where you can reinsert the original without pressing start.

Yikes, I do not even carry a set of copy originals anymore! When doing a demonstration I am always using the customers documents or the customers files (to print). When needed, I will go to the Ricoh launches at times. The idea of keeping orignal files on the site may be a good idea. Yes, I'll be at the dealer meeting. The Lexmark affiliation is actually over a year old. Their concept was to provide a turn-key printing solution that would have print jobs automatically routed to the most cost-effective printing device depending upon preset print parameters. I had always viewed it as a desperate attempt to remain viable. However, between the Ricoh SeriPrinter and the Riso HC5000, I have an improved confidence in the future of Digital Duplicators.

The Lexmark thing is now providing stability for Riso. Their sales actually increased last year, but only due to the sales of Lexmark. Otherwise, duplicator sales declined sharply, I hear. It would be great to get the scoop on this device, as Jim says, with the Seri and this, there might well be some life in the old girl yet!!!

expect people to know what that is. We've also seen some fusing issues on heavier and particularly glossy paper where the image is like a scratch and sniff sticker. Overall, it's a good product though and you can't beat the speed and space saving duplex unit. ~Jerry

They keep changing the link. It works for a while then goes bad. They must not like outside links to the pages so I took it away. Anyway, it is the Aficio FX-16 ... looks like another Samsung device. I doubt we will ever see this thing. Nice features, full color scanning, but the Samsung model is so inexpensive. I think it is also relabeled by a number of other OEM's It is on Ricoh Europe.

That stinks! Well guess I have to find a way to help the customer. The customer likes the feature because they receive two sided originals and sometimes has to fax them out to thier subs. No way we can scan2email a two sided doc on the 2015's/2018's and the 2022 may be over priced. Does anyone have any sggestions? Does Kyocera still offer this feature on their 15-20cpm system? Help! We sell Savin, but I assume this product is the same as our 4015/4018 series. If so, I would assume this can be done by going into the series feature using the combine/series key. On a 4018d (2018d) you can go in and separate a two sided copy into two copies, or a book into two separate pages. Of course, this will depend on if after installing the ARDF you have this option.
