MFP Wars, Who Wins, Who Loses?

MFP Wars, basically I've never seen anything like the past year in the last 27 years of selling copiers. Direct Branches from KonicaMinolta, Ricoh, and Toshiba are basically selling MFP systems at cost or a few dollars above in order to acquire the aftermarket business. How long can this last? My bet is it will last as long as the deep pockets of the manufacturers will permit it. rest of aritcle is here http://www.mfpsolutions.blogspot.com

Ricoh is pleased to announce the introduction of the new FAX3320L, FAX4430L, and the FAX4430NF. These models replace the current FAX3310Le, FAX4420L, and FAX4420NF respectively. The new models are the same engine as their predecessors. The only changes between the current models and the new is that the standard memory capacity has been expanded and minor case work design to the front has been made as well as a small color change to the op panel. The 240w is not meant to take the place of an OCE (8-10 E size ppm) or higher volume printer/copier. It is a lower volume machine and it's perfect for cranking out check sets and final sets for us (smaller firm). Its bigger brother the 470w doubles the output speed to 4ppm E size. Warranty heads now on order. One of our salesreps is looking at our demo unit. He's a bit disappointed about the finisher not doing booklets. It also takes a long time to print ledger full color stuff. Lots of time around the drum drying off. We explained to the rep that the copy quality is better than a Riso but not as good as xerographic. The product does have a niche market.....especially with a limited finisher.

Major Shift? Go to the Top If you are selling a service or product that causes a major shift in a corporation, then only sell to the top. A smart day-care center owner we know only markets to the presidents or CEOs of large corporations. Most large organizations don't want the "shift" and overhead of providing an in-house day-care center. Our entrepreneur proves to top management that she can provide them a needed service without a major shift.

My thoughts also, I recommended Tohoku,Ricoh manufacturing a 4 color version of the TCII almost four years ago, heck if they can make a TCII, they can make a TC IV. I also though of just having a plate maker (master maker), this would keep the cost down on the hardware. They must be thinking of something else, I beleive ink technology may have put the final nail in the coffin for digital duplicators.

Re: The World's First Duplex Printing Duplicator

I agree with Art. Tohoku is never going to listen to good common sense. Ricoh has left digital duplicating technology on the vine to die in the USA. What we have now is what we got. Make the most of it, inkjet technology is on the rise - just take a look at HP's Edgeline and Riso's ComColor......

Re: SR400 w/ Inserter ? ----Please Help

I think the question was whether it would do a 5.5'x8.5' insert. Obviously wouldn't staple it but will it insert a page that is 5.5"x 8.5. I personally think that a better idea regardless would be to insert a full 8.5x11 sheet with the other portions of the page printed with info that would be appropriate considering the placement of the insert.

I thought about that, but then there would be no need for an insert - you could just print the materials that you wanted in the first place and stich the whole document.Don't you think. I think I may be thinking about this to hard and am probably missing someting very basic.

Since Convergence is on June 10th and runs through the 13th, I believe the layoffs aimed at continued cost cutting will come at end June 2012. Even if these new layoffs impact the Direct side to a greater extent, they do not want the Press and Media to make any mention in the articles that will be written around this Dealer Event. President's Club is not a given, getting to the club demands a lot of hard work along with the desire to be one of the best.  Is there some luck involved?  Damn straight there is because I've always lived by this motto. Just to confirm, there is no fax forwarding with the EFI Series. The Fiery itself doesn't support fax (except scan-to-internet fax via Fiery Scan), so there would be no way to get the fax file where it needed to go. (The Ethernet cable only connects to the Fiery, not the MFP.)

Thanks. We found a lot of our prospects that want color - 95% of it is printed so we have been selling them color printers instead of color copiers. We have sold a lot of CLP27dn this way and saved customers a lot of money. The main thing I miss with the CLP27dn vs the C2525 is the rotate sort so we are hoping we can get that on the CLP240D but so far I haven't been able to get my CLP240D to do it.

Adding on some usability points: I absolutely hate Konica's itty-bitty touch screen for inputting addresses, file names, etc. The "keys" are tiny, and there is a limit to file name sizes. Another point I harp on again and again: the Ricoh RPCS driver. Can't be said enough how great that driver is. Makes doing booklets, "magazines," etc. a snap.

Inclusive / free toner strategy?

Wieldo (Guest) ·
To stay competitive in the market we are forced to include toner and consumables into the continuous service contracts. We use the normal rate per click method on a standard SLA. Toner contribution would be calculated on +- 80 % yield etc. If you have a large customer base and have been selling inclusive deals for a few years , your monthly free toner bill could easily become a large and difficult to handle expense/burden . It is hard to stay upbeat today and especially after the two years that we've had. I can tell you one thing I remember from the 80's. That one thing is that companies will need to reduce costs yet again. It's not a matter of need or want, they will need to lower costs. Your job is to figure out how to make that happen.
That job can happen in many different ways. Reducing lease costs, maintenance costs, IT costs, or migrating services to the cloud, or even removing print servers for cloud printing. The opportunities are there, they just need to be found.

No question that is alot of G.P. in anybody's book. I personally am not one who believes that a sales rep has right to share in the savings when a dealer takes advantage of "cash with order" discounts or quantity discounts. Sales reps aren't the ones who get "stuck" with discountinued inventory ,etc. so I'm willing to accept that deal. Therefore, I'm OK with Dealer Cost being based on regular "Single Unit Price" regardless of occassional discounts. The way I see it, for me to lay claim to that

You speak of $300,000 G.P. above sales cost. Anytime you try to compare commission plans, you need to keep in mind that that the amount of "pad" added to Dealer's Cost can have a significant impact on commissions even though it may not effect total income. This is what I mean. One company may pay $3,000/mo. salary and 40% commissions but have a sales cost that is 20% above Dealer Cost. Another company may only pay $3,000 salary and 30% commissions but be a better plan because they pay based on

We are a Standard Business Machines dealer and I'm sure I have a demo on CD of their version of the Ricoh model equivalent though not recent one. Would this be helpful?

Re: 240w background

PrintDoctor (Guest) ·
Thanks Doc & Greg, A new charge was strung @ 50K. I used 2 bags of developer and cleaned the charge assy. I have a new drum on order. I have a feeling the new drum will take care of the light background on the left side when printing from files, However, I have a feeling the heavy background when scanning originals is a seperate issue.

Check to see if your customer is printing from Word Perfect. If so make sure the MFP is selected in word Perfect as the default.

Re: 2090 printing?

Art Post (Guest) ·
Send the print job to the document server and then print from the doc server, this is logical and should work, please let me know. If you need me to check a 2090 I can check when I get back in town!

Fair Comission Plans

Boston Mike ·
I would like to know what is a fair commission plan for someone who brings in $300K of GP from sales cost. Please give me salary, commish % and what you think the rep should make that year.
