This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Third Week of July 2004)

Thursday had me in the field with 2 appointments and ten or so planned stop ins and cold calls. I also mentioned that I would be on the lookout for other opportunities for prospects.  Many times reps will ask, "where are the prospects?". Ah, grasshopper the prospects are all around you. All you have to do is use your eyes.  Many of you know that I sell my fair share of wide format, and with wide format prospecting all you have to do is use your eyes for prospects.  When you're out driving, sitting at a traffic light, or maybe in a hitting the head there are prospect (potential client) galore!  All commercial trucks need to be lettered with the company name. Over the years Ive written down those names and or taken pictures of the truck. Once I'm back in the office I make the call, some work out some don't. However it's a great way to get a conversation going when you mention you saw one of their trucks.  Try it, because you never know what tomorrow will bring!

Enjoy these awesome threads from Fifteen Years Ago This Week!

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Second Week of July 2004)

Fifteen years ago, hmmm, I was 47 years old and was with Century for 5 years. That time was something special since it was what I call the digital age of copiers. There were still analog copiers to be upgraded and the we attacked new business was to educate the client on how much that fax and printer cost per page was.  Faxing was still big and most fax machines had a cost of 3 cents per page or higher.  For companies that were receiving a couple of thousand pages a month the cost justification was easy. How I loved those days!

Fast forward and we can still sell ROI, fax usage is down, however color volume is up and there are more color A4 printers out there that are still ripe for replacing.  You just need to find them!

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (First Week of June 2004)

It was 15 years ago this week when Ricoh launched the MP 240W digital wide format printer/copier/scanner. It was a fantastic time for me in sales.  I guess I was at the right spot at the right time. Similar to when Minolta launched the Minolta 450Z copy machine back in 1984.

Ricoh broke the bank with the MP 240W in 2004.  There was no other digital wide format like it that could print/scan and copy for the price.  Many Architects, Engineers and Construction companies were farming out prints and scans to repro shops, and Staples for .50 -1.00 per square foot. It didn't take that many prints to cost justify the 240W at MSRP. Selling at MSRP would net you about $8-$9K in GP and the commissions were 50% of the GP. It was not uncommon to take home $12-$16K per month.

Yup, we had that market controlled for about two years before Xerox launched their first digital wide format.  Believe it or not we even delivered the 240Ws for on-site demonstrations. We sold everyone we demo'd!

There were some growing pains with understanding the AEC market, but Ricoh had some excellent DSM's, and product trainers that gave us the basics.  We pounded them out left and right  and all were single placements, all had high GP and we gained mega new accounts.  Gaining those new accounts also gave us opportunities to place digital copiers.

After 15 years, we still have a few in the field.  Hard to believe right?  Like I said Ricoh hit a home run with the print engine, and the compact size of the device.

Enjoy these awesome threads from 15 years ago this week!

We sell Savin, but I assume this product is the same as our 4015/4018 series. If so, I would assume this can be done by going into the series feature using the combine/series key. On a 4018d (2018d) you can go in and separate a two sided copy into two copies, or a book into two separate pages. Of course, this will depend on if after installing the ARDF you have this option. But allowing this type of pricing undermines a dealers ability to capture any Print Production Business. Historically P4P are the worst payers when it comes time to pay for cpc bills, service and supplies. So you are buying click business and not getting paid in a timely manner. Re: Hot Spot Printers

SO, the way the Hotspot printers work (as I understand it) is, you plug them in and give them internet access and there is a label on the front with the printers email address. You email your document to the printer and it prints. You can optionally require that the submitter pay a fee via credit card (provider takes a cut of that)before it prints. So, the service fees for this would cover the email address, not an IP as the printer is sitting on your network, presumably behind firewalls, etc.

It sounds like you are refering to having a 10mb or 100mb network. All of the ricoh network devices I'm familiar with use Auto-detect to determine the speed of the network but then they set that value and do not detect again. So when the printer is turned on it looks at the network and detects 10mb speed, and sets the card to 10mb. If the network chances to 100mb the printer does not detect this until it is turned off and on again.

Re: citrix printing???

I'm no expert, but my understanding is Citrix runs on a Unix platform. Usually requires the mini PCL drivers and limited functionality at the output device. But recent drivers that Ricoh has updated supposedly offer additional functionality like duplexing. Bottom line Ricoh products can connect to this environment, probably depending on the version of Citrix. But you have to be mindful of sharing what functions you will be able to access. Best bet is to put it on as a trial, based on a pre

Well, I think GWA refers to the controller almost exclusively. Ground Work Architecture as I understand it refers to the fact that the components such as memory, hard drive, networking, etc. in the controller, are shared by the system and accessed as needed. This is why the old systems needed 2 network connections for printing and scanning and now we only need one (because they didn't have this).

Ridldle Me This Brad...when it is talking about BW only, it states 33,333 is the MMV. Wouldn't doing black only use only ONE dev.... The Black. You wouldn't divide this by 4. So, it still makes sense the way I stated that if they are talking pages on the BW, then they must be talking pages on the color. You can't be talking pages for BW and Dev. for the Color on the same chart...but then again this is Ricoh, the Master of Ambiguity!

One more thing, it says the "target volume" is 5K/8K per month. That is best case senerio, or what Ricoh would want the customer to do. In reality, the machine can do more than the "target volume". This number is called the "Max. Monthly Volume". That is what is being referenced in the chart.

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (First Week of April 2004)

Fifteen years ago, the BIG news was the Ricoh acquisition of Hitachi Printing Systems.  Fifteen years later I vaguely remember those print systems.  All I can remember is that there were huge, fast and durable.  It's stated that they acquisition started Ricoh on the road to thier production print models.

When scans replace printouts and copies, it often translates into lower lease charges for dealers and diminished (high-margin) consumables revenue. In addition, selling and integrating scanning tends to complicate and lengthen the sales cycle, something many dealers want to avoid. "The [MFP] vendors are serious about

Don't knock it. We became a Hitachi Dealer about 4 months ago. Their high end printers are fantastic. IBM buys the Hitachi printers and relabels them. You can sell these boxes in areas where you don't necessarily need a 1075, 2085, or 2105 for a lot less. Go to our website www.peterswalker.com go under products, pick Hitachi, and look at the 70ppm & 92ppm printers Hitachi offers. It feels great to finally be ahead of Ricoh on something!

Seems we're coming to the end of the first quarter already. After dumping everything into the end of 2018. I've had a rough go of it for the past 7 weeks. Last week proved to be better with two orders and one of them was $45K.

We're also going see have then end of the fiscal years for most if not all of the copier manufacturers.  This time of years scares me because nothing is safe, you need to ask the tough questions up front and try your best to wrap up business either the day you met with the client or a few days after. Keep in mind that you need to set the next meeting with your prospect or client at the end of the first meeting. This can or will stop the ghosting or playing phone tag.

Lanier is still it's own gig, they are kind of a rogue company operating on their own and separate from Ricoh, Savin, Gestetner. Don't know how long this will last, but I think that if they have a good thing going on there (JD Power etc) Ricoh will likely not try to break it. The same goes in reverse too, Lanier dealers can not sell on GSA contracts cuz they don't have a GSA contract. Hope that helps Graham Also, the Lanier LP020C is a Ricoh CL3000

Art, what you call "near future" in this case is FY2005. Considering FY 2004 doesn't even start until next month I would be inclined to call it more "distant future." And that product is 40/60 not 50/50. There is no 50/50 unit coming within the next 18 months according to notes from the Ricoh Sales Staff Meeting last month.

Re: SR 860 FOLDING WITHOUT STAPLING

There is a work around that is not sanctioned by Ricoh. You must take the staple cartridge out of the SR 860 and then defeat the sensor that tells the SR 860 that the staple cartridge has been removed. Or just remove the staple from the cartridge and defeat the sensor that tells the system it is out of staples. Make sure you try this with your techs blessing. Anyone know of any other ways to make this happen?

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago, The Third Week in January 2004

Wow, a Super Bowl thread from back in 2004, talking about the 14 game win streak from the Pats. It was the Pats vs the Eagles. Fly Eagles Fly, no Super Bowl for you this year!

Enjoy the threads from 15 years ago this week!

Re: Super Bowl Poll!

·
The Patriots are now on a 14 game winning streak. They will go into the Super Bowl on the longest streak of any team since the '72 Dolphins. And Peyton Manning is putting together what might be the best postseason for a QB in NFL history. As for you folks that are picking an NFC team, you are out of your mind. Everyone knows that the "real Super Bowl" is this week's AFC Championship game. GO PATS!!

My understanding is that it can be used like the watermark feature. meaning we can keep a picture in the background of every page. I am not proclaiming to be correct with this assumption. If you have an image file that you want to use as an overlay, the first thing you have to do is print it using the RPCS driver and print to an overlay file...under job type...then you can call it from the RPCS driver and add it to the document in question. It's great for logo's, even generic letter head.

I don't think you can set it to default to require a password....Why not just use scan to email?? That doesn't require any software install like scan router does? Rumor has it Ricoh is going to drop the 1224 and 1232 from the line up as soon as inventory has been depleted. This is due to the excessive cycling of the equipment (there is no fix).

Just an opinion but while their faxes are great low end machines, from what I see their color printers will not run as reliable as I think a printer should. their warranty for replacement boards is very good but you cannot even order parts from their web site. As for parts sometimes I wait for weeks for a common gear or motor. In a low volume enviroment say 200 prints a month there okay. I like their price point and their dot printers, their faxes and low end printers. Just one persons opinion
