This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (First Week of December 2004)

I guess it's back to work for the last push of the year.  Late tomorrow I'll be reviewing the appointments I have scheduled for the week and setting aside prep time to be ready.  This month I'll focus with prospecting by day and all proposals, and order docs will be created before 8AM or after 5PM. I need to cram as many productive hours as possible for December.

Enjoy these awesome threads from 15 years ago this week!

Xerox Is Dreaming In Color

Canon Inc. (CAJ ) is No. 1 in mass-market copiers that handle both color and black and white. Ricoh (RICOY ), Toshiba (TOSBF ), and Konica Minolta are competitive, too. And Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ ) hopes to move its corporate clients to multipurpose office machines with brilliant color palettes. "Color's the name of the game these days," says Peter A. Crean, a veteran Xerox scientist. The stampede into color office gear is driven in part by the explosion of radiant Web pages, graphics-rich

I've noticed when we print pdf's on the Savin C2820 the text is sometimes blurry. The print is bold and even has a raised texture (which my service supervisor said is really the result of too much toner). Has anyone else had similiar problems? This was the result using the RPCS driver on a 6 page color brochure. When I used the PCL driver it was very, very slow to RIP and the color was totally wacky, washed out in pink.

It is when you try to reduce ARC to ANSI or vice versa that you have issues. 11 x 17 and 30 x 42 are NOT ARC or ANSI, so always extra white space. Highlighting area you want to print and saving as a new doc will work as John outlined.

Jason is correct in how to resize the drawing. It should also be to scale and I would suggest as he said to let them measure with a ruler and confirm. As to highlighting a certain area of the document and printing only that portion, that can be done in the scantools by scanning the document as a tiff and opening up the editor. Once open you can crop and save as the new document which contains only the portion you wish to print. Just go to add an entry in plotbase and find the new tiff file

You will actually see the Plotclient Win application launch without human intervention and the AutoCad files will drop into the area for Entries. Canon Buyout Marketing Dollars

Just wondering if anyone has run into Canon direct operations claiming they have a special marketing fund to tap into for buyouts to target selected clients? We all know that buyouts are part of the game, but if they have funds that are off the price book it can really create an unusual challenge...this is a Canadian deal but I am guessing this type of plan would be across NA. Our deal is a Kyocera deal. I knew they were targeting Ricoh/Ikon users. Are they going after anyone now? Thanks

As with everyday some of my time is spent on Linkedin.  Today I was part of a conversation where a third party provider for our industry had stated the data (facts) they have does not support the notion of honest reps. In a nutshell that person was stating that we (copier reps) oversell (he used overprescribed) our accounts for MFP's.  I took offense to that and posted some repsonses on Linkedin. You can go to my Linkedin profile and you'll see what I'm talking about.

What ticks me off even more is the fact that Linkedin in a public space and you knows who is reading what.  There's an old saying, "believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you read"

@ Color1 Is this a Xerox agent or Authorized Dealer? If it is an agent then I don't see how they are doing it since Xerox sets the pricing and handles all of the maintenance. They would never do a all bw page included deal under the Xerox mother ship. I have seen this with a local competitor (dealer) in my area. They simply play the odds and add the projected monthly black and white clicks into the lease. The whole unlimited "free black and white" sounds so good until you start calculating the

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Last Week of October 2004)

@Old Glory Posted this 15 years ago.

Brian Tracy says in The Effective Manager, that "change is accelerating." I believe that, do you? What does that mean to you? You know the old saying, "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always have what you always had." I don't think that is true anymore. If you always do what you've always done, you will continually have less and less. If we are not consciously getting better, we are unconsciously getting worse. In our business, if you are not growing, you are being passed by more competent and better educated competition.

NO - You cannot merge the jobs into "sets" that can be sorted. If you hold CTRL and click on multiple documents, they will all print, but they will not come out sorted. If I asked for 3 copies, I'd get 3 copies of the first page, 3 copies of the second page, etc., etc. You can create a set to be collated, but the way to do this is to plot the files to disk, then create a job in Plotbase and add all the plots you need in this set to the job. Then you can select number of copies, select "collated

Just an FYI that I stumbled upon while creating a job in Plotclient WIN. When you hilight a group of prints to add to the job, they DO NOT drop into the job in the same order. If you are collating and need them in the exact order, you need to drop one file at a time into the job to insure correct order. If anyone has found that this is not true, please let me know. Thanks. thanx for the great info! i was at an account today that needed to "reprint" exiting .plt files. I tried to add them into plotclient, however I was given an error message. quote: Unknown or not licensed file type)file C:\program Files RW-240-240 Plotbase\ss\1041\04-075A-100-plans-A-101.plt.1056.000000 whew! I then found by mistake that I could add these files to Scan Tools and was able to print them in a collated set! Can anyone elaborate as to why this happened? Thanx

Thanks Pete. The really funny thing is that I spoke to my Savin dealer rep on the same day you posted this info and he told me that there was absolutely NO information available about the new products and none would be released until the launch of the 51 ppm system in November. Maybe I should invite the poor sap to join P4P so that his dealers don't know more than he does! Thanks again! Brian

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (First Week of October 2004)

Resulting in 10 appointments and 3 opportunities for about $50K.  Need to do the same for the next 3 weeks!  Enjoy these awesome threads from 15 years ago this week!

Jay: Thank you for your information. It seems it would have been better (on many fronts)for Ricoh to have simply modified an SR840/841 to accept interchangeable punch dies. Their 2/3-hole punch is the best in the business. Even if they improve the reliability of the Streampunch, due to it's complicated paper path, it will never be as good as it could have been...Over-engineered!

Re: GBC Streampunch

Sorry - I haven't check in in awhile. We had installed beta firmware that allowed simultaneous usage of the interposer and the streampunch, but removed it because we thought it was causing other problems. We now think those problems are caused by another issue, known to GBC and Ricoh but no release date offered for the fix. We may re-install the firmware to further test its performance if we get the other issue resolved. Ron

Incorrect. MICR toner can be used in dual component machines, like the Hitachi DDP90. Don't forget that copy process to a point forces/ pushes toner from the DV roller to the drum. And we've all seen machine faults where the DV has been pulled from the DV unit. However MICR is specialist and not currently supported by Ricoh.

But, I think this may be an ongoing thing. MS updates their OS and Ricoh has to create a firmware update and the cycle repeats. A good reason for customers to purchase network support agreements from copier companies. But, Ricoh has to get on the ball. If we can have a solution to offer, it's an easy sell.

Newer machines can intergrate the modem into their system which in on the network. Ex. The AF220 required a cable for the modem and a cable for the printer and a cable for the scanner. 2 network drops. Bottom line. Cant do it.

G'Day all. You will get your yield based on the figures given by Ricoh. However it is important to understand the issues with coverage. Also bear in mind that coverage to useage are not proportional. A square block of colour on a page 100x100=1000, if you double the size of the square you quadruple the coverage 200x200=4000. Also dependant upon what you're printing will make a difference. 5% of text and 5% of graphics are different due to image processing and laying of toner and charge.

Re: New 31 PPM color

I have been putting the new 3131 through it's paces and have shown to several customers. Overall print quality is excellent - different from 6513 but obviously true 8 bit color. Should be a good fit to compete with Canon 1180 - ie. good print quality, fiery driven, low cpp and cheap. The juries still out on the durability and reliability with thick stocks, but I'm glad to finally have a higher speed "graphics" machine to offer.

From there I can evaluate the features of the driver and the click throughs. I have found clicks throughs to be very important to the end users, they want the least amount of clicks as possible. Art

$30 million to get its three Chicago-area hospitals switched to a full electronic records system that about 6,200 employees began using last year. Mark R. Eliminating the time-consuming dictation and transcription process of physicians' patient observations has saved $500,000 alone so far, he said. Neaman said turnaround times

PDF Dict Print is a new function within the extended features in DeskTopBinder version 3.1.1.1. I have attached a PDF of the features of DTB and whick models support what functionality. According to the compatibility list on in DTB, only the AP400,AP400N,AP600 & CL7100 support PDF Direct Print. Format (WF) via eCabinet. The printer driver needs to be 100% PCL compatible and the WinPrint driver needs to be printed to directly. What you might be able to do is setup a separate printer in Autocad printing that points to a paperless printer on the eCabinet. The user would have to process a separate print job when they wanted to send a job to the eCabinet. The jobs would be saved as PDFs on the eCabinet. You also should be able to take scanned Tiff files and pass them to the eCabinet

Yes, the 2238 comes with bypass standard, however it is not an option for doing covers, therefore the paper weight is limited. Great info on the Canon. I don't think my prospects are seriously considering Canon because I contacted them before they were in the market and other vendors are running a "me too" game. Plus I'm offering GEM pricing in order to place some needed color units in my territory.

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Last Week of July 2004)

Egads, it's Friday night almost 10PM and I'm still working.  My day started off at 5AM.  I arrived at the office about 6:30AM. Had to quotes to prepare before I had two appointments that were an hour away.  Closed two of the appointments and then traveled back to office to prepare some material for another appointment around 2PM.  Second appointment went okay and sparked some interest in the new PRO5160.  Did a few cold calls, nothing to speak of. On my way home, I received an email from a net new stating they wanted to move forward with an order.  Not bad three days into the new month and 3 orders. Gotta keep going!

Xerox Copying New Growth Plan

$0.67 to $0.72 a share. Xerox has responded to the challenge of competitors such as Canon (NYSE: CAJ - News), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ - News), and Ricoh, which are making the shift to color products. With color products making up about 25% of Xerox's revenues, it is plain to see that the product line has become the key driver in the company's growth strategy. The company is also leading the transition from offset printers to digital technology through the recent introduction of seven digital
