This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago, The First Week in January 2009

Ten years ago this week and what was on our minds?  It was the Great Recession.  I remember it all too well.  Many of my accounts were in the AEC market, remember losing almost 30% of that business because of bankruptcies, companies closing and companies just buying their device once they came to the end of the lease.  Hope I never have to go through that again!

Enjoy the threads from ten year ago this week!

Thanks for the link Art. The pricing listed in this post is SIGNIFICANTLY below cost on all the products listed above (C900, Finisher, PerfectBinder, RingBinder, etc). If this pricing post scares the competitors to Ricoh and helps drive down costs on competitive units for the p4p community ... then great. Realistically, no one will ever see that pricing on the street for a Ricoh c900. Why would Ricoh price themselves closer to the Xerox 700 or KM 6500 when on the productivity side the c900 is

We started as a Ricoh dealer under our first owner, but to keep another dealer from coming in down the street, we took on the Savin line. The other advantage was that we were getting installs for Ricoh and Savin major accounts. Even after Ricoh left us, we are still getting Ricoh major accounts shipped in here. The disadvantage now is that the Canon dealer bought the Lanier dealer.

I must be missing something, but I don't see where this post is pointing fingers at Lanier. We were a Savin and Ricoh dealer for 16 years, but last year Ricoh took away our Ricoh line because we could not continue to meet quotas for both Ricoh & Savin.

At one time we were also both a Savin and Ricoh dealer. The advantages we found were having two support structures, "another line" we could submit as a "competing bid", and simply having a second line. Surprisingly, I spoke to some customer who told me "I'll never have another Ricoh in this building, I hate them! oh, Savin? sure, that's fine" and vice versa.

Re: Ricoh cuts Jobs

·
We had those same issues of customers not wanting this line or that line, and remember at one time the serial number plates had one for Ricoh and one for Savin, so you couldn't order one machine and put a different sticker on it as you can now. Our main issue was we didn't want another dealer to move in and compete for the Major Account deals. But as you said, there were two structures you had to deal with.

Re: Ricoh cuts Jobs

Savin had signed us up at their 5+ pricing so yes we did get lower pricing than Ricoh. The only way Ricoh would give us lower than 1st column was to sign up on the commitment programs. The boss didn't want to because if the quota's weren't met, then we would be charged back for the difference.
Reply

Re: Ricoh cuts Jobs

·
As for substantially lower pricing, I wouldn't say that much, but it was an advantage over Ricoh without signing a commitment form. Savin didn't use the Aficio League points like Ricoh did, but they did offer a credit card program that was similar to Aficio League points but the points were put on the credit card as 1 point for 1 dollar. Credit limit on the credit card was $50 that you had to pay back, but points were not paid back, but could be used to pay a balance on the credit limit.

If you are using smart device monitor port and the printer is shared, when an error occurs, the notification will go back to the "print server" machine. I would not recommend using the smart device monitor port, but choosing a TCP/IP port and seeing if that resolves the problem. You may also be able to go to the "print server" if you are using one and a smart device monitor port and see if there are any error notifications.

I believe some firmware fixed that, but as a work around, I had a 10mb hub I placed between the printer and network.

How can so many people, left and right of center agree on something yet not see any changes? That was rhetorical...the answer is because ultimately the government gets much of it's power via the tax code. As JasonR says, there would be ways to help the poor but with a national sales tax, even the criminals and drug dealers would pay taxes. Not to equivicate Harvard with criminals but I heard today that Harvard doesn't pay a penny of tax including revenue on a $37 Billion endowment. I am curious

Print Management "Truth and Lies"

Print Management is HOT! My understanding is that Printer Management is providing a turn key solution for companies that have more than 40 printers, along with providing all service and supplies for all printers. Am I correct in this assumption? Also, print management can consist of paper workflow and moving output to less expensive systems right? I have also heardof print management incorporating paper saving software such as scanning, LAN Fax, and Fax Servers. This is also true right? Would

September 17, 2008 Another question answered and oh so many posed... During an internal conference call yesterday, IKON explained to it's employees that Canon would indeed be de-certifying IKON as soon as the Ricoh deal is final. Falling back on "Policy" - Canon expressed that this action falls within their policy on not certifying "competitors". Indeed, this action is in line with their previous movements after Xerox bought Global dealers who sold and supported Canon. http

I think your giving three seperate yet totally intergrated defintions of Print Management shows just how great a disconnect there can be when dealing with our customers in regards to providing a PM solution. I was recently doing a discovery with a company's CIO and while a PM solution had been addressed with the previous CIO and accepted as one, the new CIO saw it merely as a way for the current vendor to lock in recharged toner cartridges and service at a hefty price. i would say the answer is yes.... PM is really what your customer thinks it is, so it is really up to us during the discovery stage to find out just what the customer's viewpoint is on the subject. Obviously with the CIO I was speaking about, just providing recharged cartidges and including service on the printers wasn't footing the bill, however, for some that may suffice. It's like everything else in our business now, as the professional we have to be the one to diagnose(?) and to recommend

I just think of Print Management (or Managed Print Services) as the extension of copier programs into the print environment...all service and supplies for a set cost per copy (or in this case print). Sometimes it includes hardware, sometimes not. The other aspect we bring to the table is the establishment of automatic ordering by the device thereby eliminating the need for pre-paid inventory and all the problems associated with it i.e too much, too little, obsolete, employee theft, etc. We also

One of the other components which can be part of the managed print process is the financing side. We just recently finalized a total CPC contract with a long term client and the number one reason they were really interested in going this way is to get "off book" financing. Our deal is a cpc for a 48 month term and we carry the hardware as well as the service and supplies...for them it is only a quarterly (paid in advance) invoice for a volume of prints...no lease, no long term responsibility

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago, The Second Week in September 2003

I took the time to re-read and correct some of the grammar and spelling issues that plagued me from many years ago. I'm a copier sales person and not an English major. Please excuse typo's or grammar.  Anyway, I must have wrote this after the Ricoh purchase of Ikon and the title "MFP Wars". After the re-read, I realized that we're still fighting the MFP Wars, whether it's the low cost per pages that are low balled or the continuing battle of A3 vs A4. Somethings never change.

I went on site today and tried that route and still no dice. I also tried everything under the sun to try and get the driver to acknowledge that it had custom paper in the drawer. Also, I even had problems printing the paper from the bypass with the driver fully configured. Very odd problem, indeed.

Yes. I can copy to the trays (I tried tray 2 and bypass) with no problems at all. However, when it comes to printing, it's giving me a type mismatch even though I've set everything under the sun to make this work.

Great information. If the predictions here are correct (I have no reason to doubt), the shift we've been making as an industry (more print, more consolidation) should turn out well for us.

(23) The Wide Format Color Scanner includes scanner unit, scanner stand, monitor bracket and cable channeling. This unit requires a PC and a touch screen monitor that must be purchased locally. to conduct some testing. We basically know that the scanner will work with the 240 (based on test conducted by Contex) and the 480 (based on tests that were run by TSC). Although the launch materials do not reference, the scanner will work with the 480 and 240, however we have not confirmed it working with products prior to those two. Re: Sales Tips

Just The Facts, Please "I told a prospect that I'd follow up within a week. Two weeks later, I figured I missed my chance and they went with someone else." Sound familiar? Effective salespeople don't guess themselves into a sale. To ensure you're operating with the facts, ask yourself this, "Do I have evidence to support my assumption or how I'm feeling?" Enjoy the peace of mind that comes from gaining clarity rather than drowning in the stories that you believe are true.

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago, The Second Week in August 2008

There's an interesting thread below titled A4 Device Poll.  It's a short thread and I disable the poll site years ago. However, from reading the thread it was about ten years ago that A4 devices were starting to talk hold. What I can't believe is that the major A3 manufacturers have continued to lower prices on the A3 boxes and move very slowly with offering full functionality for A4 devices. It's been ten years!

Ricoh 2075 - Printing Custom Size Paper

Hello all, I’m having a bit of an issue with a Ricoh 2075. Our customer wants to be able to print to size 8x10.5 paper from tray 2. She’s able to get the printer to print one copy of a multiple copy job, but after that it refuses to print the rest of the job. The tray itself is set for 8x10.5 landscape and I’ve set that size into the machine under paper tray settings. Using the RPCS driver and changing the original size of the paper to a custom size, as well as changing printout paper size to

SSDP Protocol and Multicast Storm

I am looking for help in identifying the trigger of what is termed as a Multicast Storm, caused by the SSDP protocol on the Ricoh/Savin MFP's. I had a customer whose network was brought to a standstill by this "Mulitcast storm" creating so much traffic on their network. We had to disable 60+ devices and manually go to each machine and update the firmware and initialize a fix that turns this off. This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago, The First Week in August 2008

A little of news this week is that the US Dollar is growing stronger vs the Japanese Yen.  When this has happened in the past Japanese copier manufacturers have decreased pricing here in the States.  When you couple this with the Chinese tariffs that may go into effect this week, it could mean that our industry may not see price increases.  Japanese manufacturers might just bite the bullet on the increases in order to keep boxes moving out of the plants.

BTW, the dude in the picture, had just a few too many drinks at the after party from the award night. Can ya tell!
