This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Third Week of September 2014)

Alright, I'm ready to start the first day of the last week of the month for me.  Thus far it's been a struggle trying to get prospects to move forward with an order.  I'll admit that Labor Day, the golf event and BTA has taken it's toll this month.  Those four days are 20% of the month. Thus I plan to be up at 5AM tomorrow and hope to be at the office around 6AM.  Hoping the extra hours can make up for some of the time I lost.

Enjoy these awesome threads from ten years ago this week!

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (First Week of September 2009)

Labor Day Weekend is upon us. There's only a few things on my mind tonight, first is to get finished with the updates for the site.  Secondly a little worried about my friends and colleagues in Florida.  The last one is the end of the third quarter and the end of the month.  Not this month but September. I'm like WTF, it's not even the first on the calendar month and I'm jonesing already.  We close our month early, I've got a decent pipeline, but most of its 50/50 at best.  In addition I've got a golf event one day and almost two days at the BTA event in NYC next week.  The plan after Labor Day is to get in the office no later than 6:30AM and put the pedal to metal.

Enjoy these awesome threads from ten years ago this week!

Do they have some sort of embedded forms on the printers HDDs? If so, can those same forms be installed on other manufacturers printers. If the print workflow is printer-centric (vs all controlled via server/software) then, you would need to research if the same printer controls will be available to Ricohs. If it is all server-based data and forms merger, then the output files should be fairly easy to test. If you are not "reinventing the wheel" for them, then plugging a device should be easy

Re: Need your help!!

·
Seems an easy way to test this would be to have the customer capture the print file and send it to you. This has the added benefit of telling you if the output is PS or PCL. Then you send it to the Ricoh and see what comes out. If it looks perfect, then it's not printer centric, if it doesn't look good (or more likely, doesn't print), there's something needed on the printer.

It's still my belief that when Ricoh cut the deal for Ikon, one of the covenants of the deal was that many Ikon Execs had to stay on for x amount of time.

Not sure I understand your question. As far as billing a charge for prints, there is only 1 company. That's the service fee you are paying, to have the printer have an account at that company. Chuck, with the current "troubled times" (words from Frank Cannata on the latest Live Wire / Cannata Report) at Ricoh, it now makes sense that either Savin or Lanier, or both brands, get elimintated. Just as GM sells Hummer and gives Saturn to the Penske group. It is a shame that on the 50th Anniversary of Savin, started in 1959, it's existence may disappear. I thin it will be Lanier for Dealers and Ricoh for IKON and RBS. The other option is Ricoh only, all the way, for both Dealers and the

Does anyone have an idea of what either of these 2 devices have for a max duty cycle or what the AMPV is? Always suspect on these newer released devices with high PPM and rated at low AMPV. Seem like a a problem for a light production environment for reliability and quality go hand in hand.

It couldn't be that the "normal" retirement age for men in Japan is 60, and that Mr. Yoshida is now past that age? I base this on the fact that his bio shows him joining Ricoh in 1967 with a bachelor's degree, so I assume he was at least 21 at the time, giving him a "born on" date of 1946 or earlier. It's a single footprint unit with color scan capability. I'm told it uses a graphtec-built scanner. MSRP starts around $17K, options drive that to the mid twenties. Dealer cost with volume discounts could be down to the lower teens. (So if Ricoh direct were selling this product, it would no doubt be on the street for $9900!)

I have always clashed with the sales model used for DM. Why not just let the customer pay for it with credit card directly? If a rep is responsible for the sale, then give them a percentage cut on their Ricoh card as long as the customer is paying. Paying for 3 to 5 yrs as an add-on to the equipment lease is not a very efficient model for increasing volume. Sounds more like doing hard time.

Our products are a commodity only if you allow it to become one. There will always be those times when you are selling a box, that's partof any business, but if all you do is react to the market then you won't be doing this long. I always thought that I was able to provide value, but in the last year I have learned a lot about what real value is and how to create it. I would recommend the book "Getting Insude Your Customers Head" by Kevin Davis. It has made a huge difference in the way I approach sales from my past. Does this slow down the sales process? YES! But when you consider that on average you're fortunate to close 1 in 5 "new business" prospects and this process has changed it to at least 3 in 5, that's huge. I agree, we have a scanning solution using fingerprint identification and customers love it. It's easy to forget your password or ID card, but it's more difficult to forget your finger. Fingerprint technology is very convenient, but not all that secure (we leave fingerprints everywhere that can be lifted and duplicated). That's why the KM finger vein technology is great

I suggest asking your technical department. Glossy paper is not recommended for the Ricoh products. Try using a silk paper it works great. This tip came from a printer friend of mine which uses the Ricoh's in a pay for print environment.

Please note that Larry's attachment applies to the previous generation mid-range models only (Ricoh MP C3500/C4500, Savin C3535/C4540, Lanier LD435C/445C).

Understood, but it is common knowledge that Ricoh B2C products do not like glossy paper period. Overtime this will cause major jamming issues and disgruntled clients. I suggest going to a paper warehouse and grabbing samples closest to glossy which will work on Ricoh's. I know for a fact the closest is Xerox Silk paper which can be purchased up to 80lb cover or index.

Perhaps I am being mis-understood here. I am not "facing a problem" as jason says here. This is the way I like it.....in fact I don't see how you can even sell these products if you are not capable of at least setting up scanning in a server environment and setting up printing in a server environment on your own. To me that is as important of a part of product knowlege as knowing the speeds and feeds of the device.

Re: Problems with MP4000 and MP5000 Developer and Toner

·
The issue is the toner. It has wax in it and what happens is that it coats the developer roller and causes light and dark copies. The techs have to clean the stuck toner off of the roller and it will work for a time. My understanding is that the new toner will fix the problem. Ricoh has a developer kit that they sent to us to help with a large istall base of MP5000's but it is only a temp fix until the new toner gets here. They want you buy it and it costs $600.00

In a Mac environment? Unix? Linux? WINS? Citrix? What about the software available with the machine? Should the rep also be able to integrate Digidocflow into a Banner Extender system in 9 different departments of a university? How do you

Sound like to me that someones service manager needs to find another line of work. Just brighter toner? We have quite a few of the 6500 and 6501's out there and we don't see them every day, 12 X 18 isn't a single click and they were designed for the print for pay industry and CRD's. Perhaps he needs to train his techs better rather than gripe and complain online.

The PRO 1200 series will be available in August 2009 and replaces the PRO 1050. It has a Belt Transfer System and will fill a huge void in the marketplace. The new PRO C65hc is going to be a game changer! Perfect for packaging / shipping outlets, direct-mail, photo books, etc. and the color output is impressive. No evidence of Ricoh or the C900 at ON DEMAND that I could find. Anyone else?

Re: Where do you see this industry in 5 years????

I see 5 players left, I also see inkjet or some form of ink technology being the primary technology to print on paper. Looking through the other crystal ball, I can see the emergence of color flat panel displays for viewing, editing and routing documents thru a wireless networks and internet access. You will be able to have documents signed and fill out information right from the screen, this product will weighh no more than two ounces, will be about 1/4 inch thick and the size of a letter size
