The Week in Copiers 10 Years Ago for the Last week of June 2015

It is vacation week for me for my day job, however there's no vacation for the Print4Pay Hotel work.  My daily blog on working remote will be put on hold until I return.  Who knows maybe something will break during the week that I'll be able to write about.  Even though I'm on vacation we know we're never really on vacation anymore.

It's all about the consumables, if Canon got the right deal it would be a no brainer for them. There are roughly 13 players in the "toner/ink on paper" business, clicks seem to be migrating downward with MFP's and Printers (You may have the numbers on that, I'm giving it a good guess). Neither of these scenarios really make sense to me. Canon does not need A4 engines, they make all of HP's. So why acquire Lexmark? If Ricoh could afford it (both money and integration capacity-wise) that would make more sense. Canon is a proud and rich company and is not going to be acquired by HP or anyone else soon. It made over $30b last year too. HP sees itself as a solutions and service provider, not a manufacturer, it would much rather Canon take care of the manufacturing and the

When we decline to return a copier at our cost due to a competitor not doing this at their expense, we do suggest to our former customer two moving companies they can call to pick up the equipment. Of course, we will keep in polite contact over the next few years, as we known when the lease will expire next time.

Often the same Decision Maker is not around 3-5 years from now, so you will have to remind the new DM about the extra freight costs they incurred with their present copier vendor. Plus this time around you will take care of that hassle and expense for them by a line item in your new quotation.

Coming from the lease finance area of the copier industry I know this always ends up in an arguement. so we use a simple Rule If its End of Term (EOT) and the customer is upgrading we take the cost if the deal is at EOT, the customer is returning and going to a competitor, then the customer eats the cost

This is just another marketing sales tool. What there are not showing is the buyout at the lease end. It is always a FMV. KM is using there own leasing arm. If you use a lease factor of .0278 this will show you a 0% interest. We have in state government accounts, what is call a deferred payment lease. This is the state price divided by 36 months. 0 interest, 0 down, 0 buyout at the lease end. But the sell price is fixed.

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago for the First Week of May 2010

Years ago I use to burn the late night candle pretty often. In some cases I would still find myself emailing a prospect at 2AM in the morning.  In most cases the email was to schedule a meeting for later that week.

Those late night emails was just something I was use to.  It wasn't until one of my clients made mention of the email that arrived at 2AM.  Of course he didn't see it until he arrived at work.  But this client went on to tell me that he wished he had more sales people like me, meaning those that did not consider their job as just 9-5.  This client has been with me for more than 20 years now.

Thinking back it was probably not the pricing, nor the brand of copier, but more about his appreciate for sales people with a great work ethic that landed me the order.

Twenty years later I'm past the point where I send emails that late anymore.  I'm not saying that you should be sending emails that late but what if that  prospecting email at 2AM did hit home with the prospect? What if he or she thought the same as my client did years ago? They could be thinking that this sales person is really working hard to get my business, maybe I should have a meeting to know more about this person.

For those of you that can't burn the candle late. I found this on google for sending delayed emails.  I've never used it but I just might give it a shot to see if it makes a difference. Maybe the same can be true for sending emails on the weekend also.

Schedule an Email to Send Later in Outlook
  1. Compose a message. ...
  2. Go to the Options tab.
  3. In the More Options group, select Delay Delivery.
  4. In the Properties dialog box, select the Do not deliver before check box.
  5. Choose the date and time when you want to send the message.

Simply handing over a copier's HDD removes the OS within the copier making it unuseable. Plus there is some labour to remove the HDD and reload the firmware onto it. At least $200 - $300.00 total vs turning on 128 Bit AES Encryption at the start - Free. Going forward, we format the HDD on all of our own brand copiers we remove. For competitors brands, where we do not know the Service Codes, we can only inform the customer of the risks.

Most copier brands now include the ability to email or fax the meter reads and service codes on a regular basis. I have never had a customer concern about this. Every Monday AM, I get a report from all of my recent copier installs. I have gotten pretty good at skimming these reports, seeing any problems and proactively dispatching a service tech. Customer really like the idea that I am electronically watching their copier.

It would seem that it all depends on where you structure your profitability. Since Ricoh is a Japanese manufacturer and sells its product to the US Ricoh company and then US Ricoh sells it to a dealer or direct, the profits can be structured to be very little if any in the US and very profitable in Japan. Ex: cost to manufacture is 10, sell to US mfg. sales concern for 20, US concern sells it for 22, dealers or direct sell it for 24. The cost of goods to the US is high and the profits remain in

It will be interesting to see where the loyalty lies with this group of execs. I can remember shen they brought in Jim Ivy in Feb of 2000 (gee, it's been that long!), he moved in most of his guys from Savin. For the most part Ivy did an excellent job with Ricoh and Savin. I'm thinking Ricoh turns even further away from the Dealer Channel in the years to come.

Old Glory, you are way off-base regarding profitability to Ricoh on an $8,000 sale through the dealer or through their direct channel. When Ricoh sells to the dealer, the dealer is responsible for all ofthe end-marketing expenses related to the brick-and-mortar + sales rep expenses. When Ricoh (or other mfrs) run their own branches, there is a tremendous amount of overhead associated with that operation. Hence, this is one reason why Ricoh's dealer division, while smaller, was the only part

I think we make an error when we assume that Ricoh selling a machine to an end user for $8k is the same as Ricoh selling a machine to a dealer for $8k. When Ricoh sells a machine to a dealer for $8k they are done, when Ricoh sells a machine to an end user for $8k they have other costs, including paying the street rep and his manager so I don't think it is not true to say the $8k is the same to Ricoh from either source.

I like the basics of what I've heard about the product but haven't proposed it to my clients yet. The difficult I'm seeing so far is that I don't sell a lot of single machine transactions to small companies. Most of my prospects & clients have 100-250 employees, so that would mean that to purchase Seat licenses for each user, the MSRP would be $25,499 to $59,998, and my company doesn't publish Sales Cost figures for software solutions. Unless a special case arises, we have to sell it at MSRP.

With Riso making a push in offering Print-to-Mail solutions, perhaps it would make sense for Pitney Bowes or Neopost/Hasler to acquire them. Pitney hasn't come up for air since they acquired Print, Inc. several years ago in order to gain valuable service & supply contracts with no obligation to sell hardware. Acquiring Riso could be the same type of acquisition, & I believe the Riso platform is the type of low-cost, high-speed solution that could complement PB's automated mailing solutions

One potential "work around" is to check your Print Drivers for "Hold Print". Similar to the idea of "Private/ Secure Print" but without the need for a password, "Hold Print" jobs usually go into their own print queue, are prepripped and allow a user to arrive at the copier at their leisure to make sure all of the necessary paper is in the copier before they release and immediately print their job. Some copier vendors can alter their print drivers to make "Hold Print" the default setting.

Now that you raise the subject of Consumables, Ricoh allows IKON to purchase heavily from KATUN. IKON has always been notorious for buying non-OEM parts and supplies at deep discounts, which is one of the reason they had a poor reputation for service. Yet, it also helped IKON steal many a deal. Possibly, this practice will change for Ricoh products and they will only source Third Party Aftermarket for theie Canon base at this time.

The only competition I see is the Minolta and Canon but the are distant. Also becareful of the Xerox 700 Digital Press (which is nice fit between the 242-252-262 and 5000) it is a very good box and addresses most of the issues in the previous post.

5500/C6501, or you WILL lose. The best thing you CAN do, if your customer has a 50,000 + volume monthly, is pit Xerox against Xerox, by telling your customer only the Xerox 5000 can realistically do that volume (that will pit 2 different Xerox salespeople against each other - since the ones who sell the 204-262 are not the same who sell the 5000....) Hope this helps.

The difficult thing is that all of the dealers & direct ops are trained on the same selling features, so even if we are all showing the same data, RBS/IKON will always give the equipment away for nothing, so while the data is good, the value of a local dealer can only overcome so much when their price is 20% lower.

I don't know about the MP 4001, because we are still liquidating our inventory of MP 4000s, but from a service perspective, the document feeder basically had to have the feeder rebuilt every 100k pages, so that can create some downtime in addition to a higher CPP. Also, there is no print from USB option, it has an ARDF instead of Single-pass Duplex feeder. If there is a Postscript requirement, Ricoh does not have a standard PS3 Emulation, hence requiring a fairly expensive add-on to the system.

We used SalesChain until recently. I liked the nightly syncs with OMD...real time access to service histories. We recently switched from OMD to eAutomate and changed our CRM to Compass and lost all the SalesChain records. What I hate is the use of these programs to gauge a salesreps activity level. I find that a lot of my activity is dealing with lease companies or screwed up invoices or service issues. How do you log that activity? If you log it into the account then your data is watered down

Some additional tidbits from the show I was at for the last three days. I learned along time ago that in order to be successful at these types of events that you need to engage with people when they walk by your booth.  You need to greet everyone that walks by and then ask them a question.  The question I asked the  most is where they were from, after getting a response I would then ask if they have a plotter or ask if they've ever seen a white board before.  The questions sparked conversations and lead to many warm leads along with getting to know more about their business.  Plain and simple if you don;t ask you don't get!

I used to work for a dealership that sold Sharp (when this came out). It is a very nice box, the ultrasonic feeding in awesome, and the pricing for parts and consumables is aggressive. The mistake that Sharp made was to not do a beta program with commercial printers and other high volume users. The irony of Larry's statement is that I would not consider Ricoh a player here. They are chasing Xerox, Canon etc in Seg. 6 and 7, and are seriously held back by their lack of a production color unit.

I can see you'd say they are an incentive to the client, who gets to choose between commercial and the discounted contract. But, on the admin side of things, these special contracts aren't

Of course they have ordering specials and discounts that they sometimes pass along. It is usually up to the dealer principals how they choose to pass the incentives along.
