Xerox brought in the lowest RFP -- request for proposal

Maple City Office Equipment sales manager Jeff Dam recently, said municipal council had a "heart," referring to council's late-August decision to award a contract to Maple City over Xerox Global Services. Xerox brought in the lowest RFP -- request for proposal -- but Maple City, which had the contract, was only a handful of percentage points off Xerox's numbers, and was a local company. Administration followed RFP protocol and recommended Xerox, while council, in a 10-7 decision, opted instead

$6,500 list..... $5,600 LDP, once you put a MU on it, your sales cost is higher than the MSRP, what the %$#& are they thinking. Realistically, they messed up so bad by not having a color scan option with the new 2400 and 3600 (and nothing forseeable for the next 16 months), that they had to resort to this scanner from Contex. Plus the fact you need a dedicated PC, Touch Screen and the system needs to have a W2400, 2470, W3600 or 480 on the network in order to make this work.

When they connected the SR90, the postscript drivers left the machine, and the machine registered as if the postscript was not on the Print Controller. A True Sales Professional Knows Their Value And How To Use It

"Price is what you pay. Value is what you get."
Warren Buffett

One of the most drastic changes in selling over the past decade has been the rapid evolution in customers’ overall sophistication and knowledge (courtesy of Father Google).

Many of the issues salespeople encounter comes from their short-term, transaction-oriented sales mentality. This transactional approach means they go from deal to deal and from order to order. Customers made to feel like a means to an end.

"A transactional opening leads to a transactional relationship"

A TRANSACTIONAL MINDSET

A transactional sales mindset runs rampant in today's sales world. A transactional mindset is an old, outdated and misaligned sales philosophy. It has 3 main tenants:

  • Valuing the transaction over relationship (faking the relationship)
  • Meeting only their minimum expectations or whatever the customer will let you get away with
  • Using sleazy sales tactics as a sales tool to get people to buy

Each of these points are deadly to a sales rep, but the real danger to a sales rep is when they are combined. The reason so many in sales and their managers are failing is directly related to this transactional, non-human mentality. Prospects and your customers pick up on the mindset, they smell the odor and avoid doing business with you.

"Lead with your heart and not the wallet"

How do you know if you're a transactional sales rep? One, you're not happy with your sales results. Two, while you may be hitting your sales targets, your margins are lower. Three, you feel you get less respect from both the customer and your sales manager.

What may be causing this?

  • You place price up on a pedestal first in your meetings
  • You avoid difficult topics or conversations
  • You display poor selling skills because you talk more than you listen
  • You have no clue as to what is business acumen

MOST IN SALES ARE CLUELESS

Three-quarters of people who work in sales simply cannot execute, according to Kurlan & Associates. “For lack of a better word, they suck,” says Dennis Connelly, vice president of business development at Kurlan & Associates.

6% of salespeople are “elites” who are great at selling. Another 20% are doing well but could do better. Then there are 74% who are failing. Most of the people in the 74% bracket can improve if they get training. But the bottom 25% are hopeless, because in addition to being ineffective, they aren’t trainable. Those people “should be doing something else.” - Kurlan & Associates

TRUE SALES PROFESSIONALS ADD VALUE

Let's all face it, very few like salespeople. Heck, even all those in sales reading this hate salespeople.

A true sales professional knows they have something that is truly going to make a difference. They bring the best version of themselves to the business table 100% of the time.

If what they have isn't the best fit they won't cram it down their prospects throat just to make a sale.

"Weak sales funnels make sales reps do things they normally wouldn't do if their sales funnels were full"

A true sales professional understands it is not about being different in your business life as in your personal life. It's about congruency. It's about the alignment of you. The genuine, authentic and real deal version of you.

A true sales professional has dedicated themselves to the sales profession. They add value because they understand their value. They are not product pushers nor are they customer babysitters.

VALUE BEFORE VISIBILITY

True sales professionals know the value they bring to the business table. They know what makes them different than all the other sales people in their marketplace.

Sales pros understand the alignment of values. They understand and do the right things for the right reasons. They take the time to really understand their clients, their goals and their initiatives.

They spend the time to learn about their clients and their business. They do this because they care.

It's imperative that sales professionals marry their value, their client's value and their company's value in complete harmony; one that is uniquely suited to promote growth and better business.

OVERCOME THE TRANSACTION MINDSET

"Know thy value, know thyself"

If you don't know your value and how to communicate it then you'll get whacked with the price hammer.

Ditch the transaction mindset as your customers deserve better. They crave...

  • A valuable relationship cultivated over time
  • A sales professional that will exceed their expectations and surprise them
  • A sales professional who will understand and connect with them
"Know it, grow it and show it; your value"

Allow me to leave you all with this...

If you don't know the value you bring to your current clients then how can you engage in a meaningful value based conversation with a prospective buyer?

Change is Good, Especially When it Comes to Scanning Documents with Copiers

Change is good, right?  I'm going to change is even better.

Being the same old you and doing the same old thing when presenting copiers can be prove to be a bad thing. Everything is changing at break neck speed in our industry.

Thus last week I thought I would change it up a bit.  Instead of providing the same old boring talk track of speeds and feeds. I opted for making one short power point presentation (5 slides) that centered around scanning workflows. There were no pictures of copiers, no talk track about how fast the device printed or copied.

My first slide posed this question.  "Is this the way you're currently scanning your documents?" I showed the picture below and asked about which one do they use and or do you use both? One client was using scan to email and the other client used both.

2018-09-28_21-14-20

I then showed a slide that outlined the steps required after the document was received in the scan folder or thier email.

2018-09-28_21-27-32

I went over each step and confirmed that for the most part all of these steps are required when scanning documents, right?  Both clients were in full agreement.

My next slide showed my Ricoh Op panel and explained that we can set up a one touch workflow scan button for them. For the one client that was named "work permit" and two of the others were labeled as "A License" and "B License".  I explained that the magic happens because we can pre-program the 2018-09-28_21-34-45scan destinations (email, folder, fax) for each workflow.

In addition, the documents would be programmed to scan as searchable .pdf's, color, and blank page detection. At the copier we could also preview the scan and name the file. Thus all of the pre and post programming can be accomplished when the documents are scanned. This saves time and also prevents users from forgetting to post process the scanned file.

Before I forget.  I'm still amazed at the amount of people that do not know what a "searchable pdf" is.  With both clients I asked, "do you know what a searchable pdf is? Both clients did not know and I took the time to explain how a searchable pdf works and how that feature saves time when reviewing scanned documents.

My next slide centered on Cloud Scanning applications. In the Ricoh world we call this Ricoh ICE.

2018-09-28_21-52-52

Thus, I'm listing all of the connector and asking if they use DropBox, Box, Google Drive, One Drive, MS 365, Evernote, NetDocuments, etc. If I get a yes to one of these, I then take the time to educate the clients on the amount of time they would save by scanning directly to these cloud applications. If I get a no for these,  then I ask about the need to scan documents back to MS Word or MS Excel. This too provides a great education and talk track for the clients.2018-09-28_21-59-37

Why is the above slide important?  Most business lines of software (that's the software that clients use to run thier business) has a scan feature. In most cases it allows for a TWAIN scan driver work with the copier.  Users can then place documents on the copier, then open thier business line of software and then scan those documents directly into thier business line of software.  This my friends,  can also save an incredible amount of time.

Okay, you've seen all of the slides, and not once did I mention print speed, paper trays, fax (cause fax is dead), nor cost per page. It was refreshing for me and it was even more refreshing for the clients.  Just the talk track of focusing on scanning applications led to additional questions for higher end content opportunities. I told them I'm not the expert for the higher end stuff, however I got peeps I can bring in to help after we've installed the new device

Change is good, I'm going to change.

A Selling From The Heart Professional Engages With Their Network!

"Effective networking isn't a result of luck - it requires hard work and persistence."
Lewis Howes

Highly successful sales professionals have highly valuable networks. They've developed them, nurtured them and cultivated them over many years. They invest considerable time in maintaining them.

Engaging with your community of connections will help build upon your personal brand on social sites such as LinkedIn. If you build a large and smart network and never engage with conversation, it is the equivalent of compiling a massive rolodex and never reaching out to anyone.

Networking — whether done intentionally or coincidentally — can create huge competitive advantages for you.

REQUIRES PEOPLE

Anything you wish to accomplish in sales requires people. It must include a lot of them and you must take action. Even if you're an amazing sales professional, without an active network, you will struggle to consistently succeed.

I'm here to inform all of you who have big followers on Twitter or Instagram and tons of connections on LinkedIn, you actually have to engage with your following and connections. Think of providing great big social hugs. You must include an in-person, human component and feel. This is how you build social credibility. You never know when you'll need it but when you do it's heavenly!

If you don’t have the network or fail to build one, you're missing an extremely key ingredient; People. Without people, there’s no one to spread the word, your word, YOU!

True sales professionals take action and promote themselves. They engage with their network.

IT'S MORE THAN CLICKING CONNECT

We’ve all heard the saying, “Your network is your net worth.” However, building a network takes more than clicking a “connect” button on LinkedIn. It requires consistent active engagement.

A Selling from the Heart professional brings their heart to their network. They know it's OK to bring their genuine, authentic and real deal self; as they throw their arms around their network.

When you add authenticity and heart to your network, watch what happens and who engages back. A heartfelt sales professional builds a love fest with their network. They do it because they care.

Building a network is not time wasted

REACH AND TEACH

One never knows when they'll need their network. This is why a Selling from the Heart professional consistently reaches out by teaching their network.

In chapter 1 of one of my favorite books, Not Taught, by my man Keenan, he refers to the reach revolution.

"It's never been easier to market to, connect with, and engage anyone, anywhere in the world in real time - that is, instantly. Like it or not, the business world has gone global, and the shift has created the greatest new opportunity for success ever."

Question now becomes, "How are you creating your own reach revolution?"

The power of social is engagement. Start engaging, educating and humanizing your network. Become diligent and on a daily basis invest in your network. Do this intentionally and do it in an authentic manner.

"Reach is the cornerstone, the foundation of success in twenty-first century, Start building yours now."
Keenan

MAKE A HEARTFELT IMPRESSION

Unfortunately, digital has made many in sales lazy. One can't hide behind a keyboard forever! A Selling from the Heart professional drives conversation, leaves an impression, adds value and builds relationships. They truly tug on the heart strings of their network.

Your network is built over time

In order to build a true digital connection, one must engage and invest. Why? Because when you need your network, the network is there. They rally and rise to the occasion to help.

How do you expect to grow if you don't invest?

What impression are you leaving within your network?

You get out of your network what you put into your network. Sales reps can relate... "Crap in and crap out" when it comes to your Customer Relationship Management software and how you use it. The same can be said for what you do with your network.

Sales professionals lead their network with their hearts

A 401K NETWORK

Consistent deposits in your retirement funds allows you to live a fruit filled life in your golden years. When you need it, it's there as opposed to being a greeter at Walmart!

Are you making consistent deposits with your network?

Are you building a network of people who know you?

Are you diversifying your network?

Are you adding value to their lives digitally?

Does your network know the real you?

Are you masquerading online as one person but offline you're someone else?

"Invest in yourself. Your career is the engine of your wealth." -
Paul Clitheroe

Invest in your network! You can truly leverage your network into an "engine of your wealth."

HEARTFELT ENGAGEMENT

In today's world, we have so many technology platforms to help salespeople do their job better and more efficiently that we've forgotten the heart is at the center of sales.

So few in sales are placing their heart at the center of what they do.

A Selling from the Heart professional brings the human approach to their network, making it about their network and what’s important to their network!

Technology is wonderful and technology runs rampant in the twenty-first century but we must not forget to humanize it. Many in sales are leveraging technology as they dehumanize sales. A heartfelt professional leverages technology to humanize their network.

A heartfelt professional smashes technology and digital all together to humanize what they're all about. Their network feels it, their network sees it and most of all; their network lives it with them.

There's incredible power of genuine engagement with other human beings to drive sales success.

RISEUP AND STANDUP

The time is now for all those in sales to take a heartfelt stance. Let's all shout from the mountain tops...

We are a new class of genuine, authentic sales professionals!

We are not empty suits!

We know our values and live by them!

We make a difference!

We sell from the heart!

If you would like to know more about the incredible value of building your network, please tune into the latest episode of the Selling from the Heart podcast (click on the image below).

I understand, I get where you all are coming from. Every day, I walk in your shoes. I am fully committed to helping your sales team integrate social aspects and modern strategies into your current sales process to grow new business. I want you to get results. This is why I am passionate about doing this the right way, the genuine way, the authentic way! It's about understanding value before visibility.

Selling From the Heart has launched! I poured my heart into every page of this book and I think you're going to love it. You can find it on Amazon in paperback and Kindle. You can click on the book image below and this will take you to Amazon.

You can find more material inside Selling From The Heart.

In a world full of empty suits, I'm passionate about helping sales reps succeed by getting valuable before they get visible. I help sales teams understand the true value they bring to the market.

I appreciate getting the opportunity to share my stories. Integrating the use of social and sharing my story on LinkedIn was my “game-changer” in the highly competitive office technology world. With great pride I transform, challenge, coach and inspire sales teams to grow new business by helping them share their story and how they communicate it out by integrating the use of social inside the sales process. You can follow me on LinkedInTwitterSocial Sales Academy and on my podcast by clicking on Selling from the Heart.

I think your giving three seperate yet totally intergrated defintions of Print Management shows just how great a disconnect there can be when dealing with our customers in regards to providing a PM solution. I was recently doing a discovery with a company's CIO and while a PM solution had been addressed with the previous CIO and accepted as one, the new CIO saw it merely as a way for the current vendor to lock in recharged toner cartridges and service at a hefty price. From what I've seen from

i would say the answer is yes.... PM is really what your customer thinks it is, so it is really up to us during the discovery stage to find out just what the customer's viewpoint is on the subject. Obviously with the CIO I was speaking about, just providing recharged cartidges and including service on the printers wasn't footing the bill, however, for some that may suffice. It's like everything else in our business now, as the professional we have to be the one to diagnose(?) and to recommend

I just think of Print Management (or Managed Print Services) as the extension of copier programs into the print environment...all service and supplies for a set cost per copy (or in this case print). The other aspect we bring to the table is the establishment of automatic ordering by the device thereby eliminating the need for pre-paid inventory and all the problems associated with it i.e too much, too little, obsolete, employee theft, etc. We also

One of the other components which can be part of the managed print process is the financing side. We just recently finalized a total CPC contract with a long term client and the number one reason they were really interested in going this way is to get "off book" financing. Our deal is a cpc for a 48 month term and we carry the hardware as well as the service and supplies...for them it is only a quarterly (paid in advance) invoice for a volume of prints...no lease, no long term responsibility

At one time Alco (Ikon) was a distributor for Sharp copiers, and then one day Alco (Ikon) dropped Sharp and the Japanese Manufacturers shook in their boots. From what I remember, and I could be wrong, Sharp lost about 80% of their North America distribution in one day. Every since then the Japanese manufacturers have been buying dealers to preserve market share. Which brings me to a line in Tommy

Why a Copier Salesperson Loves to Sell DocuWare

You probably don’t know me but I’ve been in the industry now for over 20 years and have been fortunate to be successful selling Canon, Ricoh and Kyocera products in both hardware and software sales.

I remember when I started it was all about hardware. I used to say “black and white paid the bills and color sent me on vacation”. Back in those days a color sale would be $40,000 plus and would always be a generous commission. I remember speaking with another colleague of mine back then who had been in the industry for many more years than I and told him “ I wanted to be a color specialist”. His response was why “would you want to only sell color”? Those words rang true and I learned much from him in our years together.

I’m guessing your dealership has a document management networking team that supports sales for products like Docuware. Long ago I realized this gave me another arrow in my quiver and allowed me to position myself as an expert salesperson in our industry. Why would I just want to sell Canon, Kyocera and Ricoh when I have other software applications to offer my clients?

At first the sale may seem daunting as it is a far cry from feeds and speeds. I suggest you take the time and learn two different departments. Accounts payable and Human Resources. It doesn’t matter the industry, these departments function almost identical in every business and if you could “speak their language” you’ll unlock the door to more sales.

In my experience these sales are also very profitable as they replace labor which is often an exceptionally high cost for business. So… look around your clients and prospects offices and see if you can find boxes of paper (which I’m sure you will). Ask about Accounts Payable and Human Resources and you will find opportunities that will help businesses streamline their processes, make them more efficient and profitable and will rely on you as their trusted business partner.

Bring in your Docuware representative or network specialist and listen to the language they use. Once you’ve done it a few times you can approach any business and add value.

A Selling From The Heart Professional Is Not A Sales Settler!

"Complacency is the enemy of study. We cannot really learn anything until we rid ourselves of complacency."
Mao Zedong

I applaud DirecTV with their bold and 'direct' ads on TV. They continue to make an impact within the cable TV wars; but they've also made a substantial impact within the sales world (more in a bit).

In a sales campaign from a few years ago, they play on one single phrase which showcased a frontier-era family in a suburban neighborhood stuck in antiquated ways such as a horse-and-buggy and, by the way, cable.

“We’re settler's son, we settle for things,” explained the father in “Neighbors” when his son politely asked why they can’t have DirecTV like their modern neighbors. In another spot, “Satisfaction” boasted of DirecTV and how they outperformed cable TV in customer satisfaction, highlighting the family’s own means of satisfaction: a stick and hoop, a faceless doll, cabbages and foot-stomping.

Settling, complacency, contentment, relaxed, peaceful; it's out there right now hiding within the closet of many sales teams. Lurking in the dark shadows of their success and camouflaged where you least expect to find it, a great balancing act of excuses. It's the silent business killer, ambushing and striking sales teams without warning. It can bring even the biggest and brightest teams to their knees. What's this hidden terror, settling!

A sales reps' biggest competitor is the status quo

It can happen to you? It strikes with extreme precision. Settling, it happens so please don't fool yourself. Settling is a ruthless disease. It doesn't care about how long you've been in sales or what day of the week it is. It cares only of the cold and timid, the hard reality behind this is while you've become content a selling from the heart professional has not. They have meticulously rewritten the sales playbook.

"You are where you want to be"
Keenan

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Unguarded, the 'settling' disease has been lurking within the sales broom closets for quite some time. This didn't happen overnight, this happened because of a whole bunch of small decisions over time.

LACK OF GOALS

A monthly quota, sure it's a goal, however; what about your personal goals? What's your vision and values? Are you operating with a wish or hope list rather than a must have list? Where's the burning desire? Where's the drive? Where's the fortitude? Where's the plan?

NO PRESSURE FROM MANAGEMENT

There may be some disagreement as some sales reps will bitch regarding their sales manager constantly riding their backs. However, most sales manager's focus on the underperformers; spending less and less time focusing on the top performers. I’ve been in bullpens and heard mutterings of “I don’t care what they’re doing as long as they’re hitting their numbers”. Coach, coach and coach! This is why sports dynasties exist.

TIRED AND JADED

Often times this radiates with sales reps who have been with the same company for decades or within the same industry for eons, doing the same thing; particularly if their sales role hasn’t progressed.

They’ve been seeing the same clients for years. Day after day, month after month talking about the same products, same services to the same people, monotony of their activity shows up in their attitude towards pushing themselves to the next level; leading to apathy, complacency and taking their clients for granted.

Unless these sales reps find a way to invigorate more energy and interest back into their role, most will just mutter along in mediocrity until something shakes them out of the state they are in. Unfortunately, this translates into losing a client or the threat of losing their job.

"Salespeople have hypnotized themselves into believing what they aren't doing doesn't work"

STOKE THE FIRE

Where's the drive? Stoke the fire of passion that drives you to do the hard work to be a true one-percenter. Ignite the fire from within!

There is a great quote by my man Keenan within his book, Not Taught...

"There isn't the luxury of time. We used to say, wait until this crisis is over and we'll get back to normal, but that never happens. We have to be change animals" Michelle McKenzie, President & CEO, Canadian Tourism Commission

The luxury of time no longer exists. Settling has become a rampant epidemic within sales departments. Time is of the essence, as Michelle states, "we have to be change animals"

How are you stoking the fire? Listen to the latest episode of the Selling from the Heart podcast, as we're joined by Keenan who I guarantee will stoke the fire!

HEARTFELT PROFESSIONALS DON'T SETTLE, THEY CREATE CHANGE

Speaking of change animals, I have been inspired by the friendship I have developed with Keenan. He smacks change right across the top of the head and strongly challenges the status quo. Keenan brings an acute awareness and understanding that acceptance of change is critical within the information age we live in. This applies directly to the settler's mentality.

We have only three responses to change - resist it, accept it or create it. A change resistor likes things just the way they are. A change acceptor will wait to see what is happening. While change creators have become today's problem solvers.

Become the change creators in your industry. Take charge of your journey. Take the journey of self-discovery. Who are you? Why are you doing what you're doing?

I encourage you to pick up my first book, "Selling From The Heart, How Your Authentic Self Sells You" as this will stoke your fire!

DO THE HEART WORK

A selling from the heart professional identifies new processes, looks for new opportunities, brings new and different insights into businesses with the goal of helping corporate executives solve business problems or challenges.

A selling from the heart professional adopts the mentality focused on helping their prospects and clients for all the right reasons versus closing the "big deal" for their personal benefit.

New Ricoh MP C501SP "A4 or A3 or a New Hybrid MFP?"

The first time I heard about the new Ricoh MP C501SP was a pic that a Print4Pay Hotel member posted on this site. That pic came from the recent Ricoh Convergence in Las Vegas a few months ago.

I took a good long look at the device that's positioned as an 50 page per minute color A4 device. My first thoughts is well, it kinda looks too big, it looks very similar to another Ricoh device, and it looks like the MP C501SP has an A3 style document feeder. Alright, its just a pic, I'll just have to wait and see what's the deal behind this new color A4 50ppm device.

Yesterday I needed to create a configuration page from the Aficio League for a recent order. There it was, the configuration page for the new Ricoh MP C501SP. I then checked for the brochure, and the sales information guide. I was in luck both were posted up on the site. It was reading time!

What I found

  • Document Feeder holds 220 sheets of paper
  • Document Feeder is a single pass feeder capable of scanning @180 images per minute
  • Document Feeder maximum paper size is 11x17
  • Each Paper tray holds a max of 550 sheets of paper
  • Tray one is dedicated letter
  • Additional paper trays hold 550 sheets of paper and max out at legal size paper
  • Optional 50 sheet stapler
  • Weight of the device is 197lbs

Whoa, stop the presses!  All of these specs are identical to the A3 color MFP's (MP C2004, 2504, 3004, 3504, 4504). The only difference is that the MP C501SP can't print ledger (11x17).

I checked out the pictures of the paper trays, and each of three optional paper trays seem to have a plastic insert/guide that does not allow for ledger size paper to be installed.

What is it?

What we have is an A3 MFP disguised as an A4 MFP.  I'm okay with this since I can also sell the crap out of scanning 11x17 on an A4 print device. The color speed of 50ppm is also fantastic.  As far as volume goes, the MP C501SP's sweet spot is between 5k-15K pages per month.

All is well and good with the features too. It also seems that the MP C501SP will be the first A4 device using the A3 cost per page model.  That's a win, win also.

My Thoughts

I'm trying to figure out how to put this with out offending some peeps.  Many manufacturers now produce one color print engine that is capable of different speeds. It's the same box, the same print engine, the only difference is the speed and some options aka accessories.  I'm in the camp that believes that the manufacturers should just give us one box and dealers can then purchase a speed license.  Think of the time that's saved from ordering and how about the savings on parts, accessories and supplies.

The MP C501SP isn't going to be a game changer when it comes to the price of the hardware.  But, it can make a big difference when you're comparing the TCO compared to traditional A4 MFP's.  We will have the A3 cost per page model with an A4 MFP.

I'll be posting more in the upcoming days on this device.
